Software Assessment Validation Status: 0 Full Validation Cl Limited Validation Date of Validation: X Not Validated, Explain: Update to existinq validated software that is commerciallv available and universallv used bv qonvernment, utilitv. industrial, educational and research institutes. Date: 14 Sept 2006 f 6. Amroval r SRN Number:,40L 7. QA Verification Verified by: TOP-6-1 (6/2005)
Attachment to Software Release Notice (TOP-6-1) for ArcView GIS 3.3 Digital elevation model (DEM) data (2001) for the area of Bexar County, Texas and Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) road coverage (2002) was downloaded from Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) website ( The DEM originated from the USGS National Elevation Dataset. The extent of the DEM data covers a 1 degree by 1 degree block of USGS 7.5' Quadrangles with coordinates; 29" N latitude 98" W longitude by 29" N latitude, 98" W longitude with a resolution of 30 meters per grid cell and the TxDOT road file covers Bexar County, Texas. These files were downloaded in Arclnfo Interchange format (e00). ArcView 3.3 has a separate import utility (Import71) to convert the interchange files to Arclnfo file format. Both files are in the same coordinate system, geographic, decimal degree horizontal units, and North American Datum The DEM has vertical units of meters. ArcView GIS 3.3 can change the projection of vector data, but not raster data. For the purpose of this Installation test, the data will remain in the geographic coordinate system. The imported Arclnfo grid (tnris-dem) was opened as a grid theme in ArcView 3.3. The Map Units were set to Decimal Degrees and the Distance Units were set to miles in the View Properties. The grid opened with nine elevation classification bins, plus No Data. The Theme Properties window will confirm the spatial coordinates stated above (Figure 1). Figure 1 Using the Legend Editor the number of classification bins was changed to 15 to create more detail and the Elevation # I color ramp was applied. To confirm the bins, the Identify Tool was used to select a point in the white area on the grid (black arrow). This point value/elevation was in the range of the white bin (Figure 2). 1 of4
=View GIs 3 3 Figure 2 Add the imported TxDOT vector theme of roads for Bexar County, Texas. The road coverage is located in approximately the center of the DEM. ArcView GIS can create a new theme from the query of another theme. However, the queried theme must be in Shapefile format. The shapefile theme bxr-rds.shp was made using the Convert to Shapefile tool and added to the project. Figure 3 shows that both the Arclnfo, bexar-rds file and the new bxr-rds.shp files are exactly the same as the shapefile overlays the Arclnfo file. I arcview-install-test.doc I 2 of4
Figure 3 Using the Query Tool, highways were selected from bxrrds.shp. The selection was verified by opening the Attribure Table for bxrrds.shp and using the promote button to bring all selected records to the top of the file (Figure 4). Figure 4 The selected records are converted to Shapefile, bxrhwys.shp, using the Convert to Shapefile tool. Bxrhwys.shp is in the same location as the selected records of bxrrds.shp (Figure 5a), and bxrhwys.shp is a separate new shapefile (Figure 5b). n 1 d Figure 5a 3 of4
Y Figure 5b The Installation Test passed because ArcView GIS 3.3was able to successfully open an imported grid file, classify and then reclassify the data values of the grid and apply a color ramp to represent the classifications. ArcView GIS 3.3 also successfully opened an imported vector file in Arclnfo format and convert that vector file to a shapefile, retaining all data. ArcView GIS 3.3 was able to then create a new shapefile containing only those roads selected using the Query Dialog Window. Files used for this installation test are included on a CD-ROM.
