While the AusChamps is always an exciting event in its own right, this year will haveaspecialflavourwithstakeshigherthaneverbefore.withaustraliahosting the2016clubcrewworldchampionshipsinadelaide,thisseasonwillbetheonly opportunityforclubstoqualifyandchaseaworldtitle. ThetopfivecrewsintheMixed,Women sandopencategoryacrossthreeracedistancesinallagecategorieswillbe awardedthehonourofcontestingtheccwclessthanayearlater.ofcourse,thestandardrequirementthatallclubs mustcompeteinthecategoriesthey vequalifiedinfortheccwcatnextyear sauschampsstillapplies.moredetail onthe2015and2016raceformatisinsidethisbulletin. TheotherimportantchangeistheexpansionoftheOceaniaChampionshipracing.AllAustralianstatesquadswill nowbecontestingthetraditional500mevent PLUS200mforthefirsttime.Stateracingwillalsobeheldinthe20s and 10s boats and the top three Premier state squads will qualify for the inaugural Asian Club Championships in November2015inFuzhou,China.Again,moredetailisavailableoverthepage. NEWRULES MODIFICATIONTORULESREGARDINGPADDLERAGE Competitorswillbeeligibletoraceinanagecategoryiftheyhavetheirbirthdayforthatcategoryby1Juneof theyearofcompetition. Forexample,ifyouare49yearsofageduringthisyear schampionships(14b18april)2015,butturn50before1 June2015,youareeligibletoraceinSeniorB(50+category).Ifyouturn50after1June2015,youwon tbe eligibleforseniorbuntilthe2016competition. Whilethiswillaffectaverysmallamountofcompetitors,itwillmakeplanningcrewsandentriesalittleeasier withtheauschampsalwaysheldinapril,butondifferentdaysanddateseachyear. Example, two entries are received in the Senior C Open Small Boats. The competition will not be held, and crews will be offeredtheopportunitytocontesttheseniorbopensmallboatsorcombinewiththeirsenioraopensmall BoatcrewtocontestSeniorAStandardBoats. 6 IMPORTANTMEDICALINFORMATION AusDBFwillNOTberequestingdoctors clearancesformasters(40+)paddlersforthe2015auschamps.instead, anew WellnessCheckup systemwillbeimplementedtoprotectindividualsandthesport. Allpaddlers,irrespectiveofage,areencouragedtoengageintakingresponsibilityfortheirownprolongedgood healthandlongevityascompetitiveorsocialpaddlers.regularmedicalcheckbups,bloodpressure,bloodtests, stresstestsandmuscularskeletalrecoveryandmaintenanceareallhighlyrecommended. TheonuswillbeonallpaddlerstodeclarethattheyhavehadengagedinregularmedicalcheckBupsoverthe past12monthsandtodisclosethattheyhavenoknownprebexistingailmentsthatcouldendangerthemor otherswhilepaddling.thisshouldbeviewedasavitalinvestmentinone shealth. This change has resulted after receiving feedback on disparity in the way requested medical clearance were treatedbydoctors.somedoctorsrefusedpointblanktowriteclearancesduetolitigationconcerns,whilesome wroteclearanceswithoutperformingorprescribinganyformoftests.fortunatelytherewasagreatdepthof soundpracticeinthemiddleground. While the situation was not ideal, AusDBF is aware of at least two instances whereby paddlers who sought clearances were found to have serious medical issues. These issues precluded them from participating at AusChamps and required them to undergo cardiac surgery. We are happy to report positive outcomes, the promptsmadecouldwellhaveresultedinpreventingprematuredisabilitiesordeath. Toassistyouwithyourhealthandmaintainingpositiveinvolvementindragonboatracing,AusDBFhasprovided thebelowdocument&questionnairepennedbymedicalprofessionalswhopaddleandunderstandthesport. Thesedocumentscanbeusedasaguidewhilespeakingwithyourdoctor. Takegoodcareofyourselves,wehavebutonelife Ifinanydoubtregardingyourhealthcheckitoutwithyour doctorwithoutdelay. Dear(Paddlers,(( At(the(2012(Australian(Championships(in(Melbourne(the(Dragon(Boat(community(was(devastated(when(an( experienced( paddler( collapsed( and( died( during( a( Senior( B( 500m( race.( ( The( cause( of( death( was( a( cardiac( arrest.( It( is( very( likely( that( the( paddler( had( no( idea( he( was( at( risk.( As( a( result,( government( authorities( requested(ausdbf(take(action(to(address(the(risks(of(competing(in(dragon(boat,(and(identified(all(competitors( over(40(years(of(age(as(being(at(a(higher(risk(of(stroke(and(heart(attack.( While(there(are(no(statistics(for(the(incidence(of(sudden(death(during(dragon(boat(races,(we(know(that(this( can(occur.(we(also(know(that(sudden(death(can(occur(at(any(age.( Dragon( Boat( racing( involves( a( combination( of( frequent( bursts( of( intense( activity( during( 200m( and( 500m( races,(often(many(races(per(day(and(longer(events(such(as(the(2(km(sweeps(race(which(are(often(held(at(the( end(of(a(long(day(of(races.(our(demographic(is(also(skewed(such(that(we(have(many(paddlers(over(the(age(of( 35(yrs.(who(are(competing(at(a(high(level(and(often(backing(up(in(races(across(several(age(categories(on(the( same(day,(hence(increasing(the(work(load(on(their(bodies.( Depending(on(the(level(of(effort(achieved(during(paddling(a(competitor s(heart(rate(can(go(from(resting(to( maximum(in(as(little(as(30(seconds.(if(a(paddler(has(an(underlying(heart(condition(this(sudden(rise(may(lead( to(serious(problems(especially(if(the(condition(has(not(been(identified.(( We(are(encouraging(the(entire(Dragon(Boat(community(irrespective(of(age,(fitness(or(experience,(to(have(an( annual(wellness(checkup(to(ensure(that(they(have(no(unidentified(cardiac(condition(and(that(they(remain( healthy(and(able(to(enjoy(competing(for(many(years.( AusDBF 2015Australian,TransBTasmanandOceaniaDragonBoatRacingChampionships Page6of16

7 Our(recommendation(is(that(our(paddlers(complete(the(following(questionnaire(prior(to(seeing(a(doctor(for( their( consultation,( have( a( physical( examination( focusing( predominantly( on( the( cardiovascular( system,( a( Cardiovascular(Risk(Assessment(and(an(annual(resting(12(lead(ECG( If(you(have(any(concerns(as(a(result(of(your(examination,(our(consultant(cardiologist(has(recommended(that( the(most(useful(additional(test(is(a(stress(ecg(to(maximal(heart( (i.e.(to(continue(the(test(to(the(point(of( exhaustion(rather(than(the(usual(stress(ecg(which(aims(to(reach(85%(of(age(predicted(maximum(heart(rate.(( We(wish(to(advise(paddlers(that(there(is(no(100%(guarantee(that(by(doing(an(annual(Wellness(Check,(this(will( prevent(sudden(death(during(or(after(competition.(but(we(anticipate(by(adopting(our(proposal(paddlers(will( significantly(reduce(their(risk.( Pleasecompletethisquestionnaireandtakeitwithyouwhenyouvisityourdoctor 1 Haveyoueverbeentoldyouhaveaheartcondition? 12 PADDLERFEEDBACKGENERATESPOSITIVECHANGEIN2015 Every year AusDBF conducts a survey of participants to see what they thought about their AusChamps experienceandwhatgoodideastheyhavetoimprovethenextone. WiththeAusChampsnowholdingSmallBoat(10s)racingforthelastfourseasons,paddlershaveindicatedvery strongviewsabouttheformat.whileanoverwhelmingnumberofpeoplefeltthe10sshouldberetained,the majorityfeltsomeclubswere gaming thecategoryandneglectingthetraditional20sracing. Withthisinmindwehaveremovedrestrictionsaroundthe10sand20screwsseeninpastyears.For2015,all paddlerswillbeabletocontestboth10sand20sinthesamecategoryanddivision.thatmeans,forexample, youcannowpaddleinthepremieropen10sandpremieropen20s. Therationalebehindthisisthatthewinnerofthe10scanclaimtohavebeatenallclubsandracedagainstthe bestonoffer.previously,largerandstrongerclubsfocussedonthe 20s.Itisalsohopedclubswillnolonger choosebetweenthesmallandstandardboats,andthe20scompetitionwillbestronger.ausdbfisawaresome clubshad20bplusmenorwomenavailable,butchosetoenterthesmallboatclassastheyfeltitenhancedtheir opportunities for medalling, as they did not have the depth across the board. Now, clubs can put their best effortsintobothclassesandseeexactlywheretheystand. We have also expanded the representative racing program, with distances of 500m and 200m in Small and Standard Classes on offer. The Oceania Championships will now be a standalone day, giving all paddlers the opportunitytoenjoytheirresults,withouthavingtoswapjerseysandslipintotheirclubcrewsintheafternoon. Theintroductionof10sand20sisalsodesignedtostrengthenthecompetition.Manysmallerstatesdon thave thedepthtocontest20sinanumberofagecategories.thismeantfieldswereoftensmall,andsomestate crewspreparedallseason,onlytobetoldatthelastminutetheyhadnoonetorace.underthenewformat, moststatesshouldbeabletoentermoreagecategories,givingthemtheopportunitytoraceforthefirsttime. The Award is presented each year at the AusChamps to a remarkable volunteer,inmemoryandcelebrationofthelifejontaylor.theawardisin recognition of the outstanding contribution that Jon Taylor made to the development and growth of the Sport in Australia since he first became involvedinthesportinthelate1980 s. JonTaylorwasafoundingmemberofAustralianDragonBoatFederation andavisionary.heheldpositionsontheboardasadministrationdirector, andthenpresidentfrom2003untilhisretirementinapril2008. Jon was one of those truly amazing people, who was willing to give everything to the growth and development of this sport. Jon was passionate about the sport of Dragon Boat Racing and was very determined to see AusDBF reach its potential of having all States in Australian as members. This was finally achieved at his final meeting in April2008whenTasmaniabecameafullmember.Hewasalsoadriverof thedevelopmentofoceania,whichhasnowbeenestablished.
