12 Undergraduate I am originally from Chile, South America. I really wanted to live, study and work overseas. Australia is a great cosmopolitan country, in which I had the chance to meet nice people from everywhere. I chose UQ because of its prestige as a world class university. If you want to work helping others and also challenge yourself learning about how the body works, nursing is a good profession to work in. In the future, I would love to work in aged care, stroke rehabilitation and mental health. Marcelle Le Feuvre Bachelor of Nursing 10

A career in Midwifery A career in midwifery will enable you to work in a variety of public and private maternity and neonatal care settings, academia/teaching, research, rural and remote health, and aid organisations. The UQ school of nursing and midwifery was my first choice for midwifery training because it has a large amount of clinical practice incorporated into the course. The course teaches us to be self-directed and independent learners, and the placements start early in the course so, from the beginning, you get the practical experience that will help to get you ready for the real job at the end. For me it was all about getting hands on as soon as possible, it helped to consolidate the theory we were learning and at the same time and gave me an insight into what the daily life of a midwife is like. It has been so rewarding to get to work with women and their families from the start and share in their special life changing moments of welcoming a new baby into the world. I can t wait to start my career as a midwife. Carolyn Tanis Bachelor of Midwifery 3rd year Nursing and midwifery

Applications for credit may be submitted by any person who gains entry to the program. The UQ Nursing and Midwifery program sits head and shoulders above any other program I ve seen. One of the best things about the UQ program is the high exposure to the clinical environment from such an early stage of the course. From week five of my first year I was placed on a nursing ward and exposed to the real nursing world. It was by far the best thing about this program, and from the start it taught me real world nursing skills such as patient communication, time management and working in an interdisciplinary team; skills that are difficult to learn in a classroom or during lectures. The nurse to clinical lecturer ratio in the UQ program is fantastic. Having one highly qualified Clinical Lecturer between twelve means that the support I receive is incredible. Having a long list of skilled professionals at my fingertips is so valuable to my education and the knowledge that so much support is available in the clinical area is amazing. It is a world away from the streets of Brisbane, but for local Dalby girl and UQ nursing and midwifery student Lucy Finlay, spending her holidays in a remote Community Health Clinic in Cambodia was a dream come true. Lucy was one of fifteen students and three clinical staff from the University of Queensland School of Nursing and Midwifery to leave Brisbane in early January to spend four weeks undertaking a Community Health Placement Cambodia was such a wonderful experience I loved every minute. One of my definite highlights was assisting in the delivery of two babies. It really opened my eyes as to how lucky we are here in Australia so to be able to help those in need it was a truly rewarding experience Lucy Finlay Dual Degree student Nursing and midwifery

After graduating from the Bachelor of Midwifery at UQ my classmates and I entered the Midwifery workforce work ready and with advanced practice skills. Eighteen months down the track I chose to undertake the Honours program, again with UQ SONM, because of UQ s excellent research reputation, and flexible study options. The benefits of this have been that I have been able to study part-time and externally, around my work and family commitments. Because I couldn t attend the campus my academic supervisor and my academic mentor made themselves available for fortnightly phone conferences and frequent contact in between. The support and guidance I have received with my studies has been fantastic, not just from my supervisor and mentor, but from the librarians, the administration staff and the peak bodies and expert academics all over the world that my supervisor has connected me with. As a result of this I have had my first article accepted for publication by an international journal. How to Apply Domestic students: Applications must be lodged through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) International students: Applications must be lodged through UQ International. I chose to study nursing at UQ due to the sheer amount of practical experience we get to do. I have found my practical days to be challenging, but at the same time have gained invaluable knowledge. I am so pleased that I chose to study at UQ, as I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my study over the past year. But by far, the best thing about UQ is that everybody cares. From the minute you step into the library, book store or classroom there is somebody willing to help you and push you to achieve your best results. Adeline Ryan Clinical Schools In the first year, the program is delivered through small group based teaching at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) located on the grounds of the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH).
