2 Summer Academies 2015 Welcome! Enriching, fun and educational hands-on morning and afternoon workshop-type classes for rising 3rd-9th graders. Week-long and project-based, Academies provide an in-depth exploration into STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering and Math) and Arts areas. Taught by experienced instructors. Bring a lunch and stay all day with our After-Academy Clubs program. All students receive a certificate of completion and a PVCC Student ID. Spring Break Program! 3 Academy Descriptions For Rising 3rd-6th Graders Black Rocket Partner Black Rocket has over a decade of experience designing camps in the S.T.E.M. and Digital Arts fields. Every program is powered by the camper s innate imagination and designed to bring their ideas to life in a fun, handson, learning environment. All Black Rocket programs mirror real life experiences and the collaborative nature of the design process. Students are encouraged to work in pairs or teams for most of the Academy. WEEK 1: June New! Kitchen Chemistry Who knows what chemicals lurk on your kitchen shelves? Create volcanoes, breed life forms, and rubberize a chicken bone, all with ingredients you already have in your kitchen pantry. Explore scientific concepts in a fun and funny way, with safe experiments that you can even try at home. Kodu Game Lab Race Trials Let s create games using Kodu, an intuitive visual programming language. You will develop a physicsbased racing game of your own design. First you will build the world and track, then player controls, followed by checkpoints, scoring, win conditions and balanced opponents. By the end, you ll have a playable game. Along the way, we ll review computer, mathematical logic, problem solving and creative storytelling skills. Instructor John Haverkamp has a background in artisanal crafts and computer software instruction for youth and adults in university and community settings. M-F 6/15-6/19 1-4:15 p.m. $135 LEGO Films and Stop Action! Make your LEGOs come to life! Bring in your favorite action figures or LEGOs and create a short film with your friends. Whether you want to recreate a scene from Star Wars or design a world of your own, this class brings your dreams to the screen. You will need to bring in LEGOs or action figures from home, but all other equipment provided. Your films will be available on a password protected Web site to share with friends and family. You will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. M-F 6/15-6/19 8:45 a.m.-noon $199 Minecraft Designers If you love the game Minecraft, but always wanted to design your own characters and buildings for your games this class is for you! Learn the basics of creating 3-D models using a new software to design your very own objects, create skins for characters, and import them into your favorite Minecraft games. To access your project at home you must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone and game console version of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent address is required to use 3-D modeling software. You will work in teams for most of the program. M-F 6/15-6/19 1-4:15 p.m. $199 WEEK 2: June New! The Glam Gamers Club Hang out with friends, have fun and learn key S.T.E.M. skills in this one of a kind class! Candy Crush, Facebook and Instagram were all built by people who understand the foundations of design and technology. In this class learn the basic elements of 2-D game design. Each day will have a tech challenge and a profile of the female stars of the tech world. Your games will be available on a Black Rocket Web site to share with friends and family. M-F 6/22-6/26 1-4:15 p.m. $199 Video Game Animation Take your game design to the next level by creating and animating your own character sprites, objects, and backgrounds. Start with a name, develop the character s personality, signature moves, special powers, and a story line. Finish with a fully animated character to be used in future games. You do not need any prior experience in game design, animation, or sketching. Your animations will be available on a password protected Black Rocket Web site to share with friends and family. We ll cook authentic comida latina. Buen viaje! Come take a voyage to experience making art, cooking food, singing, crafts and speaking en Español! We will create a short skit in Spanish. No previous Spanish necessary! Instructor Amanda Evans, a local Spanish teacher, has taught people of all ages both at home and abroad. Mixed Media Mania What happens when you combine paper, jewelry, yarn, found objects, leaves, grass, dirt, chalk, and a little of whatever else? Mess or Magic? Yes!! Design 2-D and 3-D art through combining traditional art materials plus found objects. You will plan and create pieces all over the world. Instructor Dolly Joseph is a lifelong artisan, craftsperson and an educator, designer and instructional technology expert. M-F 6/22-6/26 1-4:15 p.m. $135 WEEK 3: July 6-10 Updated! App Attack! Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app and game development tool, students will explore the world of web-based apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of App publishing functions. Your created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. No prior experience is necessary and you do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Let s Draw Fashion Designs Become a fashion designer for a week! Learn about how designers create their own fashion designs. Explore your own design style using a variety of drawing and paint materials. Instructor Kimberly Ramberg is a sewing and fashion design instructor for children and adults at Les Fabriques. Collage Time We ll make collages using everything from photos to found objects. Famous artists like the scissor art of Matisse, will inspire us to create exciting, dynamic compositions. You will learn the fundamentals of industrial design and engineering in the manufacturing process. Join us for a journey into heart of Paris and discover how to make your masterpieces and culinary curiosity, and learn to sing in French! (Yes, there will be la musique too!). For the final project, you will create a short skit en Français as well as delectable items for parents to déguster (taste). No previous French necessary. Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Whether you want to be the next Mark Zuckerberg or the high school student who just made $1 million for programming in his bedroom, this course has the essentials you need to begin your journey. Box Puppet Pioneers Create an original puppet show! We ll create small puppets and a mini-set from everyday recycled and up cycled materials. To inspire us, we ll watch short videos of puppet shows. You will learn how to build an App in a collaborative exciting environment. Technology is changing everything - the way we work, communicate, educate and govern. Meet professional women with cool tech careers out in the field. The Academy is geared towards learning about women involved in the technology field but it is open to all students.
