2 Equipment Provided By Competitor Recommended software: Imaging: Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements or Coral Photo Paint Page Layout: Adobe PageMaker, Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress Drawing: Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, Corel Draw NOTE: Page Layout cannot be completed in a Drawing or Imaging program. PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST To provide competitors with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to be both creative and technical under strict time restraints. This Desktop Publishing contest is designed to prepare each student for a career in the Graphic Industry. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO BE TESTED PRACTICAL 92% JOB INTERVIEW 5% PROFESSIONAL ATTIRE 3% *Strong project planning and time management skills *Knowledge of design basics including, colour theory, page layout and typography *Technical knowledge of the format and requirements of press ready files *Practical skill and knowledge in the use of a Vector Drawing application such as Adobe Illustrator *Practical skill and knowledge in the use of a Bitmap Editing application such as Adobe Photoshop *Practical skill and knowledge in the use of a Page Layout application such as Adobe InDesign RULES AND REGULATIONS Please be sure to review all rules and regulations in the Complete Competitor Information Package, available online at Immediate disqualification may occur at the discretion of the technical chair if a competitor displays any one of the following: Acts inappropriately Shows disregard for the safety of themselves or those around them Breaks the established rules and regulations including: Uses equipment or material that is not permitted Dishonest conduct (cheating) Uses personal digital saving devices (jump drives) prior to your project been submitted to the judges. Speaks with those outside the contest area
3 JOB INTERVIEW To assist competitors in preparing for their eventual job searches and to become valued employees, there is a job interview incorporated into this contest. It is expected that the competitors will arrive WITH A RÉSUMÉ and be prepared for interview questions and discussion. Performance in the interview accounts for 5% of the individual s overall mark. CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS Competitors are to be dressed in a clean and appropriate manner. Competitors are not permitted to wear clothing with logos or printing. The exception to this rule is the logo of the school, school board that the competitor is representing. ONLY the logo of the institution under which the space is registered can be visible. Corporate logos or names are not permitted on a competitor s clothing. 8:30-9:00 Orientation 9:00-11:30 Competition 11:30-12:00 lunch 12:00-3:00 Competition Halton Skills Agenda Job interviews will be conducted throughout the competition.
4 The Task: You have been asked to create a series of products to the following request of service from the Halton Regional Council. The Regional Council is hosting a Youth Conference to raise awareness of conservation and actions young people can and should undertake to be Environmentally responsible. You will need to create a new Halton Regional logo for this project. You will need to include it on all printed and web based material, e.g., letters inviting students to the conference, the advertising of the workshop with posters and magazine ads and material for delegates who attend the conference. The conference theme is Conservation: What can I do. The audience for this conference is Grade 8 and 9 students. The grade eight students will be grouped with grade 9s who are presently enrolled in the high school these grade eight students will be attending in the Fall. What must be Created: (all items are to be original designs created by you) The NEW official Halton Region logo Stationary for notes with Halton Region logo (Halton Regional Council letterhead stationary paper with a letter inviting the Grade Eights and Nines in the Halton Region.) (layed out in a page layout program) 1/4 Page ad in teen magazine (layed out in an imaging or designing program) Poster advertising event (at least 13x19) for in school advertising (layed out in a page layout program) News release for the web. (layed out in a page layout program) You must complete all of the preceding materials.
5 JUDGING CRITERIA Technical Elements Correct resolution of images Correct colour mode of images Correct size of raster images Correct file saving format of images Correct document sizes Appropriate utilization of bleed, trim lines, fold lines Collecting digital files for archiving Production of press ready PDF Production of digital colours separation Printing of colour composite Assembly of final product Use of appropriate application Vector line quality Utilization of master pages Type management tabs, indents, rules, text wrap and paragraph styles Following verbal and written instructions /64 Creative Elements Quality of initial concept drawings (thumbnails) Overall quality of final design Ideas and originality Understanding the target market Suitability and legibility of typography Suitability and use of colour Quality of image manipulation and effects /28 Job Interview Appropriate Attire /3 /5 Total / Total 100 /100 As the rules state, there are no ties. If the score is tied after the contest, the creativity elements will be used as the tie breaker
