1 Cumberland High School Art Department Graphic Design 1 -Syllabus Teacher Room Phone Hours Text: No text required Course Description: This course is designed to help students develop an understanding and solid foundation in the fundamentals of typography and page layout. Beginning with the basic letterform, students will develop an appreciation for the vast variety of type and typefaces available with today s technology. Through a variety of exercises students will learn to use and manipulate typography, illustrations and symbols to communicate more effectively. These exercises will explore the fundamentals of page layout in logo design, letterhead design, poster design, corporate identity and advertising, etc. Students will begin to learn and use industry standard graphic design hardware such as digital cameras and scanners, and software such as Microsoft Publisher. Main Goals: To develop in the student an understanding of how communication can be enhanced through the creative use of type and typography. To develop in the student an understanding of the relationship between cultures, their symbols and communication within those cultures. To develop in the student an understanding of how communication can be enhanced and achieved through non-verbal imagery. To develop in the student a working understanding of page layout concepts, procedures, and strategies that enhances communication. To develop in the student a working understanding in the use of standard page layout program procedures as it pertains to typography, symbols and digital imagery. Grade Span Expectations: [list ELA and Math GSE s] ELA W : In reflective writing, students explore and share thoughts, observations, and impressions by analyzing a condition or situation of signifcance(e.g. reflectiong on a personal learning or personal growth), or deveoping a commonplace, concrete occaisions as the basis for reflection. *At the conclusion of each lesson a reflective essay is required. Requirements: Calligraphy (optional): Lesson #1 Hand lettering the sentence The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog contains every letter in the alphabet. Lesson #2 Hand letter a common phrase, motto, expression, using the letter forms as a basis for design. Creating ligatures, ascenders, descenders, etc.

2 Typography: Letter form design: Lesson #1 Letter patterns. Using 1 to 4 letters, create a design (motif) and repeat to create a pattern. Negative/positive space/shape, emerging patterns, type manipulation. Lesson #2 Monograms & Ciphers. Choose 1 to 4 letters and create a Monogram and Cipher design, using manipulation of letter spacing and overlapping of letter parts. Lesson #3 Stationary design. Choose 1 to 4 letters and create a Monogram or Cipher design, through creative use of type placement, type faces, images, symbols, shapes, and spaces. The original design should be in B&W (monochromatic) to analyze the basic design. Color variations can be added later. Word Design: Lesson #4 Visual Definition. Choose a word (suggest adjectives) and using type choices and manipulation visually define the word Lesson #5 Logo design. Design a logo(s) using creative use of type placement, type faces, images, symbols, shapes, and spaces. Original design should be in B&W (monochromatic) to analyze the basic design. Color variations can be added later. Lesson #6 Phrase Design. Choose a common phrase, saying or quote, using type manipulation and creative placement; create a design from the phrase, saying, etc. Using letters and words as shape and space with no emphasis on the actual meaning of the phrase, etc. Lesson #7 Enhancing a Quote. Choose a quote from a famous or notable person, Through creative type placement and manipulation, emphasize and enhance the meaning of the phrase. Copy Design: Lesson #8 Variation in type styles (texture). Set the short paragraph provided (the copy) in at least five different typefaces, keep the same type size and leading, but change the type face to create a different textural quality to the copy (the paragraph). Lesson #9 Paragraph Indications. Choose a short piece of copy that contains approximately three paragraphs. Set all the copy in the same typeface and point size. Using creative page layout, indicate the beginning of each paragraph so that each group of paragraphs appear to be a uniform set. Create at least three solutions and compare the results. Page Layout: Lesson #10 Flyer design. produce a full page flyer for the company listed. With this assignment the company logo is supplied and certain information is required to be included. However, the images, their placement and overall layout of the page are left to the designer. Lesson #11 Menu Design. produce a single fold menu, printed both sides. All required information as well as the menus items and prices will be supplied in a word document. Additional images, placement of the copy as well as the page layout are left to the designer. Lesson #12 Print Ad. several print advertisements (newspaper and insert circular) will be produced. These ads will include certain required information and fit into a specific print size Lesson #13 Brochure design. produce a creative brochure for the company listed. This assignment includes word design and copy design as well as page layout. Lesson #14 Poster Design. Using the PSA concept, a small poster will be developed that addresses a public concern. PSA is an acronym for Public Service Announcement. Related Graphic Designs:

3 Lesson #15 Corporate stationary. Choosing from a small group of companies, a package of correspondence materials will be developed. Beginning with a logo, the package will also include a business card and stationary materials. Lesson #16 Advertising Package. a package of related advertising materials will be produced for the same company. The development of the advertising materials will, at first, require the development of a logo. The materials will also include corporate identity and advertising. Lesson #17 Greeting Card Design. A series of greeting card designs will be developed, for a number of different occasions. The designs are required to have a consistency so that they appear to be from the same company. Resources: Each student will have access to a computer with Microsoft office suite, including Publisher and Word. Each student will have access to a digital scanner. Each student will have access to a digital camera (with shutter and aperture priority) that has the capability to download images to a computer and a flash drive. Evaluation: Each weekly lesson will be graded using a rubric specific for that lesson. The rubric uses a base 100 for scoring. Weekly lessons will be averaged for a quarterly grade. Course Schedule: Enter quarter/week, topic for the week, and required reading/assignment in the appropriate columns below. Use the TAB key to move around in the table. To insert rows, click on the table and then on the Table menu, point to Insert and click on the Row action you want to take. To delete rows, click on the table and then on the Table menu, point to Delete and click on Rows. 6 Major Assessments: Common tasks are Menu design and PSA Poster design assignments. Both are extended and performance based (as are all assignments) Common Course Assessment: All assignments are performance based in that the assignments are designed so that every student works within a common set of parameters. While no two finished assignments will look the same they will be graded on their adherence to the pre-established set of common parameters.
