Energy efficiency in communication networks in Horizon 2020 perspective Pertti Jauhiainen Network Technologies European Commission DG CONNECT September 25, 2013
EU action to tackle climate change targets for % GHG (compared to 1990 levels) -20% primary energy consumption (compared to projected levels) 20% renewable energy Climate and Energy package
ICT contribution to climate action 1. Reduce the sector s footprint More energy efficient ICT components and systems 4.7% of world electricity consumption in networks, computers and data centres (2012) and, ICT is one of the few areas where the overall energy consumption will continue to increase 2. Enable reductions in other sectors Better monitoring and management of energy consumption New business models, working practices and lifestyles A 15% reduction possible according to GeSI by 2020
Comparing Trends Source: iminds
More Complex Traffic Patterns Increase of mobile subscribers More complex content Demand for x Data rates More Frequent Usage Powerful Devices x Increase in overall traffic demand Exponential increase of mobile data subscribes (4x in EU) Internet content more complex (Avg. website 3x size in 5y, 90% of all www are multi-media) Mobile devices are used more frequently (itunes has > 500k apps, adding 10k each day) Devices become more powerful (Increase by 100% over of wireless users) Development of cellular data rates: Cellular peak data rate increase every 10 years by 100x Services evolve design today for services of tomorrow Target: > 1Gb/s per user
How clouds change the picture 1. Trend towards cloud services being accessed via wireless communication networks such as WiFi and 4G LTE. 2. Energy consumption of cloud services accessed via wireless networks could reach between 32 TWh/y and 43 TWh/y by In 2012, the figure was closer to 9.2 TWh/y. 3. Wireless access network technologies account for 90% of total wireless cloud energy consumption. Data centres account for only about 9%. 4. Industry must focus efforts on making cloud services more energyefficient, including developing more energy-efficient wireless access network technologies CEET White Paper, 'The Power of Wireless Cloud"
Green ICT in FP7 5grEEn (EIT-ICT)
