13 MARIE SLODOWSKA- CURIE ACTIONS (MSCA) support research training and career development focused on innovation skills. The programme funds worldwide and cross-sector mobility that implements excellent research in any field (a "bottom-up" approach). 14 TYPES OF MSCA Individual Fellowships (IF): support for experienced researchers undertaking mobility between countries, with the option to work outside academia Innovative Training Networks (ITN): support research networks that develop new researchers Research and Innovation Staff Exchanges (RISE): Stimulate international and inter-sectoral cooperation. COFUND: support regional, national and international programmes that finance research training or fellowships involving mobility to or from another country 14

15 WHO APPLIES? Early-stage researcher Experienced researcher HOST INDIVIDUAL FUNDER ITN RISE COFUND RISE IF COFUND Early-stage researcher: less than 4 years research experience and who does not have a PhD degree at time of recruitment (ITN, COFUND) or secondment (RISE) Experienced researcher: in possession of a PhD degree or at least 4 years of research experience at the time of submission (IF), recruitment (COFUND) or secondment (RISE) 15

16 MOBILITY RULES Researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their proposal submission (IF), or recruitment by the host organization (ITN, COFUND). In the Career Restart Panel (IF) and the Reintegration Panel (IF) researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of their host organization for more than 3 years in the 5 years immediately prior to the deadline for submission of proposals. 16

17 INDIVIDUAL FELLOWSHIPS Applicant: host organization jointly with the researcher Beneficiary: the host organization that recruits the Experienced researcher. Must be in a member state of associated country. Partner organization: institutions that provide additional training and host the researcher during secondments. Topics: Any topic (except research areas covered by EURATOM) Funding: Awarded to the host institution. Covers salary, family allowance, research and training costs, and indirect costs of the host. 17

18 IF: EUROPEAN FELLOWSHIPS - Held in the EU Member states or associated countries - Open to researchers either coming to Europe or moving within Europe (with the restrictions of the mobility rule) - Research funding is for 1-2 years - Can help to restart research careers after a break - Can also help reintegrate researchers coming back to Europe. - Can include a secondment period of up to 3 or 6 months in another organization in member states or associated countries Eight -. panels: Chemistry, Social Sciences and Humanities, Economic Sciences, Information Science and Engineering, Environment and Geosciences, Life Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics 18

19 IF: GLOBAL FELLOWSHIPS - For researchers based in the EU or associated countries. - Composed of an outgoing phase (secondment to a partner organization in a Third country) and a mandatory 12-month return period to a host organization (the beneficiary) located in a member state or associated country. - Research funding is for 1-3 years (up to 2 years in TC and 1 year for mandatory return) - Can also include a secondment period of up to 3 or 6 months in another organization in member states or associated countries 19

20 IF PROPOSAL Training-through-research To develop and widen the competences of the Experienced researcher, particularly in multi/interdisciplinary expertise, inter-sectorial expertise, and transferable skills - Scientific excellence of the research project (quality, originality, innovative aspects) - Two-way transfer of knowledge (institution researcher) - Qualifications and experience of the supervisor - Capacity to reach a position of professional maturity - Impact: Communication and result dissemination - Implementation: coherence and effectiveness of the work plan; appropriateness of the management structure 20

22 EUROPEAN RESEARCH COUNCIL - Independent funding body set up by the EU in 2007 and led by scientists - Funding excellent researchers of any nationality, to carry out frontier research in Europe, via annual competitions - Scientific excellence is the sole criterion on the basis of which ERC frontier research grants are awarded - Application can be made in any field of research - Independent researchers of any age and any career stage can apply - Substantial (and portable) easily handled grants - International, top level peer-review 22
