3 LECTURE SYNOPSIS Caring and the Science of Prosthodontics Speaker: Prosthodontics has changed in a way that few envisioned. Changing technology and patient care trends have expanded our scope of patient therapy. Our practices and patient care alternatives have become more diverse and complex. As a result, first choice treatment alternatives and best practice therapies for our patients have dramatically changed! The presentation will consider how critical diagnostic and prognostic considerations have changed and must guide our treatment planning and care. The secrets of realizing best practice outcomes via a restorative driven philosophy will be shared. The impact of implant placement, abutment design and final restorative options will be hi-lited. HAS DENTISTRY SOLD ITS SOUL? Reflections on the Commodification of Health Care Speaker: Professor Alastair V In common with the other professions in health care, dentistry is in grave danger of losing its professional integrity and autonomy its soul if you like - (without even realising it!), because of the increasing influence of industry on all aspects of clinical decision making, from choices of treatment options to reliance on the accuracy and completeness of published data on safety and effectiveness. In this lecture, I discuss how this creeping commodification has happened, with examples from dental practice and research, and then suggest how dentistry may yet save its soul. Implant supported and conventional therapy will be covered, as well as the role of advanced digital technologies such as 3D Imaging, 3D Planning, 3D Guided Therapy, and design/fabrication of digitally driven restorations. Restorative materials including ceramics will be addressed and a rationale for selection/utilization presented. Course Objectives 1. To understand the critical prognostic measures as part of diagnosis and treatment planning 2. To understand the best evidence available in establishing support for current opinion and patient therapies. 3. To understand how the existing evidence supports patient care and techniques in fixed prosthodontics. 4. To understand and apply a variety of restorative materials and techniques with a special emphasis on ceramics. 5. To understand and apply implant supported therapy as part of best practice alternatives in managing partial and complete edentulism. 6. To understand and apply Digital Dentistry in the modern educational and patient care environments, maximizing patient experiences, our outcomes, control, and efficiency.
4 SPEAKER PROFILES Essential and Efficient Root Canal Instrumentation Using Evidenced Instruments Speaker: Professor Hyeon-Cheol Kim Endodontic treatment is mainly purposed to reduce microorganisms from the root canal system. To reach this goal, clinicians may need to keep the principles from the diagnostic procedures to post-endodontic restoration. It is absolutely important to enrich clinicians with knowledge on modern endodontic methods and concepts, through which we can maintain a high success rate of treatments. If we implement all aspects of a clear antibacterial treatment concept, we can achieve a success rate bigger than 90%. In this lecture, the scientific background and practical basics of modern endodontics will be presented. A whole range of procedural steps will be covered, including anatomical reconstruction, rubber dam application, working length measurement, bacteriological correlations and different methods of irrigation, different techniques of root canal filling as well as post endodontic restoration. Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) endodontic files have brought a big step toward efficient practice of endodontic procedure. The rotary files help clinicians not only reduce their working time but also increase the clinical success rate with minimal procedural errors by stainless steel instruments. Now the rotary NiTi instruments are the essential equipment for the root canal preparation. Recently introduced instruments made of heat treated alloy with center-off design have made it possible to shape the root canals with minimal number of instruments and to preserve the root dentin integrity. Clinicians need to understand the characteristics of each instrument system which may bring a different resulting root canal shape including potential aberrations and clinicians also need to consider the basic principle for root canal preparation and to give sufficient efforts for cleaning procedure to compensate the minimized shaping procedures. This lecture will give an insight based on research evidences for the endodontic instruments as well as their practical usage with minimal fracture risk. Stephen, DDS, MMSc Professor and Head, Department of Restorative Dentistry Director, Center for Digital Excellence Director, Implant and Innovations Center University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry Dr received his D.D.S. from the Medical College of Virginia.
