1 Course Specification Faculty : Dentistry Department : Endodontics Program Specification: Diploma Degree A-Basic Information 1-Programme Title: Diploma in Endodontics 2-Departments (s): Endodontics 4-Coordinator: Dr. Hayam Youssef 5-External Evaluator(s): 6-Last Date of Programme Specification Approval: B-Professional Information 1-Programme Aims The endodontic postgraduate program is designed to: Engage in research in Endodontology to advance knowledge of pathogenesis of disease, its natural history, its prevalence/incidence and association with various factors and finally its prevention and treatment. Develop a specialist who is capable of correlation of basic sciences and clinical sciences, and challenge the requirements for certification.
2 Provide an endodontist with certain specialty that enables them to deal with different problems and provide proper solutions using recent endodontic technology. Individuals who successfully complete this advanced education program will be awarded a Certificate in Endodontics. 2- Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) a- Knowledge & Understanding: a1. Describe the internal anatomy of the pulp space for all teeth and its variations. a2. Recognize and illustrate instruments used in performing root canal treatment a3. Memorize steps of different cleaning and shaping techniques of root canal system and explain how to determine their objectives a4. Illustrate the mechanical behavior, manipulation and physical properties of different medicaments and materials used during mechanical preparation of root canal. a5. Describe different and recent techniques for obturation of root canal system and identify different obturating materials. a6. Illustrate advantages, techniques, and limitations of radiographs in endodontic diagnosis and treatment. a7. Illustrate physiological, histological and, pathologic picture of pulp and periapical tissues and management of their diseases. a8. Describe the microbiology of the dental pulp. a9. Express different methods of vital pulp therapy. a10. State different bleaching materials and esthetic principles required for vital and non vital teeth. a11. Recognize pharmacologic supportive therapy (analgesics, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory agents) used in endodontic problems and its role in controlling pain and infection. a12. Describe methods to restore endodontically treated and badly broken down teeth. a13. Recognize the concept of adhesion in endodontics. a14. Discuss how to perform proper diagnosis using recent diagnostic aids to provide a differential diagnosis and develop a properly sequenced treatment plan. a15. Describe causes and differential diagnosis and different modalities to control orofacial pain. a16. Identify and select appropriate endodontic emergency treatment method. a17. Illustrate different errors that may occur during technical steps of root canal treatment and their management. a18. Define and describe different types of endo-perio problem.
3 a19. Enumerate classifications of traumatic injuries and illustrate methods of treatment. a20. Enumerate the indications, contraindications and discuss the preparations, and techniques of endodontic surgery. a21. Declare vertical fractures of teeth. a22. Recognize and discuss causes of success and failure of endodontically treated cases. a23. State and describe different methods of non-surgical retreatment. a24. Identify biological aspects, differences in healing pattern, steps of diagnosis and treatment planning and factors that may complicate cases of elderly patients. a25. Describe other different treatment procedures that are related to endodontics b-intellectual Skills: b1. Collect, analyze and interpret data from the medical and dental histories and clinical evaluation to determine their relationship to the patient's endodontic treatment. b2. Formulate a diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan for conditions that require endodontic treatment in support of the total oral health of the patient, requesting information/consultation from other healthcare professionals as needed. b3. Expose, process and point out differential interpretations of lesions and normal anatomic structures through radiographs and/or digital images. b4. Judge different problems of technical and/or clinical work and apprise different solving probabilities based on sound knowledge b5. Manage time effectively and have good personal, teamwork, IT and operational skills in order to contribute to the efficient delivery of healthcare to an optimum quality standard. C-Professional and Practical Skills c1. Integrate and link information gained from clinical examination with those gained from radiographic examination to reach a correct diagnosis and treatment plan. c2. Perform vital pulp therapy. c3. Diagnose and manipulate traumatic injuries of teeth and their supporting structures. c4. Provide endodontic treatment for cases with mild difficulty. c5. Develop a differential diagnosis of orofacial pain. c6. Recognize and manage, or prevent, endodontic pain and associated anxiety using physical, chemical and psychological modalities. c7. Provide appropriate emergency treatment to relieve pain and resolve infections of endodontic origin. c8. Diagnose and treat periodontal disease and defects in conjunction with the treatment of the specific tooth undergoing endodontic therapy. c9. Perform intraradicular restorations and cores in endodontically treated teeth; when the patient is referred, this treatment is accomplished in consultation with the restorative dentist. c10. Practice non-surgical retreatment of failed endodontic cases.
4 c11. Perform intra and extra-coronal bleaching procedures using different recent techniques. c12. Apply the infection control program effectively. d-general and Transferable Skills d1. Identify the regulations that control the doctor-patient relationship. d2. Practice the team work skill. d3. Use the information technology to improve the education through research work activities. d4. Apply different preventive program s to fulfill various community needs. E - Attitude: d1.
