2 Introduction Aggregates are crucial materials for the construction industry and make up the largest proportion of materials used in concrete. As such, the quality of aggregates used in a construction project must meet project purpose, and use of inappropriate aggregates may result in failures. Singapore lacks this natural resource and has to import from other countries. In Singapore, the import of construction materials is regulated by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA). As part of BCA s regulations, potential quarries are to be surveyed and aggregates be examined by petrography analysis, mortar bar test, chloride and sulphate content test. Importers whose imported aggregates fail to meet BCA s specifications may face serious losses should their aggregates be rejected. The aim of this half-day workshop is to give you a better understanding on site survey, aggregate hand sample examination, petrographic examination, mortar bar test, chloride and sulphate content tests, as well as their main procedures. In addition, this workshop will also provide important information and solutions for construction companies especially those facing concrete failure and structural issues. Also to give you an overview of the identification of deleterious minerals in aggregates and concretes- to have an in-depth understanding of control of essential construction materials. 02

4 Who Should Attend This workshop is designed for a multidisciplinary audience of: Aggregate Importers Concrete Markers Civil and Construction Engineers in Building Construction and Quality Control Project Managers in Construction and its relating companies About the Speakers Dr. Cheong Khai Wing got his Ph. D. from University of Malaya majoring in applied geology. Working as an exploration geologist, he has been actively involved in various types of industrial and metallic minerals exploration for mining-based company groups. He is also involved in all kinds of industrial and metallic minerals explorations throughout Malaysia including limestone, granite, kaolin, ball clay, gold etc. Currently, he works on petrographic examination of rock samples submitted by laboratories from various construction projects in Malaysia such as water dams, tunnels, housing sub-terrain study, major cross-link, double rail tracking project etc. He also carried out regular quality assessment of rock aggregates from all quarries throughout the region such as field examination which is carried out on quarries when encountered quality problem. He conducts in-depth field examinations and laboratory tests helping clients. He has also been invited to carry out detailed geological studies on various quarries, with submission of reports to Building and Construction Authority of Singapore. Mr. Ng Yeow Leong is currently the Engineer in charge of the preparation and analysis of petrography, mortar bar and surface examination under the material characterization laboratory of TÜV SÜD PSB. Before he joined TÜV SÜD PSB, he worked as a development engineer for 4 years in CPG Laboratories Pte Ltd, where he was involved in material testing, development of new tests; including the setting up of petrography examination capabilities. He is also an Authorized Analyst under the Building and Construction Authority of Singapore s Importers Licensing Scheme. Dr. Tang Song Bai is currently the Product Manager, in charge of the operation and business of material characterization laboratory of TÜV SÜD PSB. Before he joined TÜV SÜD PSB, he worked in an instrument supplier company for about 4 years to support the application of metrology tools and instruments in the characterization of advanced materials and in R&D of National University of Singapore for 3 years to grow and characterize nano-materials. He obtained his Ph. D. from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2000, majoring in applied materials and physics. He has published around 45 technical papers in referred journals, in the field of synthesis and characterization of various advanced materials. Dr. Chen Huayi is currently the Assistant Vice President, Chemical Centre of TÜV SÜD PSB. He supports the Management of Chemical Centre in Product Service, Customer Service and is also responsible for new services developments in ASEAN. With over 20 years of expert experience, Dr. Chen plays an instrumental role in the company s businesses of trace elemental analysis, chemical compositional analysis and material characterization for industrial products. He is a recognized auditor for different organizations and a consultant for environmental monitoring, chemical processes, material testing and product failures identifications. Dr. Chen was awarded his Ph.D. in Applied Materials & Surface Science from the National University of Singapore where he specialized in material surface, interface and bulk characterization, and materials applications in industrial processes. He has published more than 15 research papers in international referred journals and technical conferences. 04
