For more information on UTAP, please visit Overview: Following the successful launch of the Managing Conflicts & Resolving Disputes Effectively Through Mediation (Module 1) workshop at the Supreme Court from 29 to 30 September 2014, the Institute of Professional Maritime Development And Training (IPMDT) of Marine Offshore Oil and Gas Association (MOOGAS) presents Managing Conflicts & Resolving Disputes Effectively Through Mediation (Module 2) and the Associate Mediator Accreditation Assessment to enable the attendees to try for accreditation as "Associate Mediators" with the Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC), besides being eligible to join the Panel of Maritime Mediators of MOOGAS. The effectiveness of Maritime Mediation in resolving disputes cannot be over emphasized as evidenced by the recent ruling by the Court of Appeal that a settlement agreement reached at Mediation is binding and enforceable. Judging from the surge in global maritime activities, it is envisaged that the need for mediation as an ADR tool would be enhanced alongside with the increase in commercial disputes. The raison d'etre for IPMDT to organize Maritime Mediation Courses and present these courses in collaboration with SMC and supported by Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) is to work in tandem with the Government to establish Singapore as an International Mediation Hub and train sufficient qualified and certified mediators to uphold this reputation, especially in the maritime industry. Like Module1, the course content of Module 2 has been specially and meticulously crafted by the SMC, SMA, and MOOGAS to contextualize it to the maritime industry. 12 CPD points will be awarded to successful participants. 5 SMC WORKSHOP INSTRUCTORS ALVIN CHENG (MR) Alvin is a lawyer by profession. His main area of practice is in civil and commercial litigation, including alternative dispute resolution. Alvin graduated with Honours from the University of London in He was called to the Bar of England and Wales as a Barrister-at-Law in He was admitted to the Singapore Bar as an Advocate and Solicitor in Alvin also holds a Master s degree in Corporate and Commercial Law from the University of London. Alvin is an Associate Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC) and the State Courts of Singapore. He mediates cases at SMC, and at the Primary Dispute Resolution Centre in the State Courts. Alvin is a member of SMC s Adjunct Training Faculty. He is also a Teaching Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Legal Education, where he is a tutor and trainer in advocacy, drafting and mediation skills for law graduates sitting for the Bar Exams. Alvin also holds an Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA) awarded by the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) of Singapore. Alvin is a member of the Law Society of Singapore, the Singapore Academy of Law and the Honourable Society of Lincoln s Inn. LAWRENCE TAN (MR) Lawrence initially studied engineering at the National University of Singapore before making the switch to law studies at the University of Buckingham. Upon his return from England, he was with another large Singapore law firm, before joining Drew & Napier as a Partner in May 2000 and was a Director in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution Department. He is currently one of the founding partners of ELDAN LAW LLP. Lawrence is an adjunct lecturer with the Singapore Institute of Management (in conjunction with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) as well as a tutor with the Board of Legal Education for the Post Graduate Law Course. He is also a Principal Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre. He has also co-authored the book Laws and Practice of Injunctions in Singapore. Who s Who Legal: Singapore 2008 list Lawrence as a leading lawyer in the field of construction. Lawrence specialises in Building and Construction Law. He acts for and advises statutory boards, developers, contractors and architects, engineers and other consultants in construction related disputes, in both litigation and arbitration (domestic and international). MOOGAS WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR CAPT CHATUR WAHYU CaptChaturWahyu is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Manager with the Singapore Maritime Academy. He embarked on a sea career with NSSPL in He served as a Master with Ocean Bridge Shipping in He joined Singapore Maritime Academy as a Lecturer in He received an Excellence in Teaching Award from Singapore Polytechnic in He is currently serving as an Elected Member of the Board of Studies of Singapore Polytechnic. He was appointed as adjunct lecturer for both the undergraduate and post graduate degree programmes at the Australian Maritime College (University of Tasmania) and Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (NHL University of Netherlands). He served as a Council Member of the Singapore Nautical Institute (SNI) in He is currently serving as a Member of the Executive Committee of the Marine Offshore Oil and Gas Singapore (MOOGAS). He obtained his LLM (Maritime Law) from the University of Southampton, England, in He is also accredited as an Associate Mediator for the Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC) and has mediated several disputes at the Small Claim Tribunal in the State Courts on a pro bono basis.
