Message from the Superintendent Welcome to Fresno Adult School. We offer a wide variety of courses and programs that not only seek to provide opportunities for life-long learning for adults, but to help parents support the academic achievement of their students. I commend your interest in pursuing adult education, and I hope that through our offerings in General Education Development (GED), English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), Career Technical Education (CTE), High School Diploma, Community Education and Parent University we can assist you in your pursuit of learning. I am especially excited about the collaborative relationship between Fresno Adult School and Parent University, which is in its second year of offering courses to empower, engage and connect families to support student achievement. Through programs like Parent University, Fresno Unified continues to invest in classes that allow our community to become more skillful in assisting their children reach their full academic potential. A listing of Parent University courses is included in this brochure. Finally, I want you to know that our Board of Education stands firmly behind a set of core beliefs that all students can and must learn at grade level and beyond. Fresno Unified School District Policies Sexual Harassment Policy Fresno Unified School District promotes an environment supportive of gender equity (Title IX) and free from any form of sexual discrimination or harassment. The governing Board prohibits sexual harassment of or by any student or employee. This policy applies to conduct during and relating to school and school-sponsored activities. Sexual harassment is inappropriate and offensive. All students have a right to be educated in an environment free from sexual harassment. All School District employees have a right to work in an environment free from sexual harassment. Prohibited sexual harassment includes, but is not limited to, unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal, visual or physical conduct of a sexual nature. The Board encourages and expects a student to report incidents of sexual harassment to any teacher, counselor, or administrator at the school site immediately. No Smoking Policy The use of all tobacco products is prohibited on all Fresno Unified School District campuses. Complaint Procedure The FUSD Board of Education has established a policy for filing complaints concerning school personnel. The policy is posted in each room and can be obtained in the Fresno Adult School office. Fresno Adult School ESL Policy ESL classes include seven different levels of instruction including citizenship classes. FUSD shall establish adult classes in English upon receipt of applications from 25 or more persons older than eighteen years of age who reside in the district and who cannot speak, read, or write the English language to a degree of proficiency equal to that required for the completion of grade eight (EC 52540).

Enrollment sessions are subject to change as maximum capacity is reached. Specific program information is listed in the following sections of this brochure. Photo ID is required for testing and to receive test scores. Please arrive minutes early; parking is limited. Bring a pencil. Schedule is subject to change without notice. Adult Basic Education English as a Second Language GED Test Preparation Please allow 1.5 hours for enrollment session. A placement test will occur the following week at the same time the enrollment session was attended. No children allowed. Call for further information. ESL students interested in citizenship can start preparing for the citizenship interview and test now. Review important facts about American history and government. Learn about American culture and geography and how to complete the N-400 application for citizenship. Practice answering questions for the citizenship exam. One-on-one oral practice tests will be given to students before their INS interview. 6 Fresno Adult School FALL/WIINTER STUDENT ASSISTANCE CENTER 6 RESOURCES TUTORING JOB DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES TUTORING JOB DEVELOPMENT STUDENT ASSISTANCE CENTER RESOURCES The Student Assistance Center (SAC) supports the educational needs of the Fresno Adult School (FAS) student. Located in Room 108, students can take advantage of a wide variety of services offered, which include, tutoring, computers, text books and career planning. Students can study and use the center s computers for class projects and to locate community resources. Staff is available to answer questions and to help the students reach their goals. The SAC connects students to services and resources that help them address personal, health, academic and career issues by offering regularly scheduled workshops and guest speakers on campus. FAS is pleased to provide Teaching Fellows from CSUFresno on campus to assist students. Tutors are available in FAS classrooms and for individual or small group tutoring in the SAC, Room 108, during center operational hours. Tutoring is available for High School Diploma, GED, Adult Basic Education, Career & Technical Education, and English as a Second Language. CAREER PLANNING Fresno Adult School s Job Developer is available to assist students with their career planning. She is available to help students with their interview skills, update resumes, and help plan career paths. Students and professionals meet to network and discuss: careers, the job market, suggestions to job searching, interviewing skills, transitioning into the working world, time management, industry expectations for employment and career readiness. What will I gain? Information on careers, interviewing tips, employment outlook, resources and more. When does Career Club meet? Career Club will meet twice a month. 7 ABE & GED TEST PREPARATION FREE CLASSES! FREE CLASSES! ADULT BASIC EDUCATION & GED TEST PREPARATION Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes are designed to help you improve your basic reading, writing and math skills. ABE classes prepare you for GED Test Preparation classes or high school diploma programs. GED test preparation classes are designed to help you to pass the five subject test areas required for the GED examination: Writing Skills, Social Studies, Science, Reading and Mathematics. Fresno Adult School offers GED Test Preparation classes in English and Spanish to those who do not have a high school diploma and are interested in earning a high school equivalency certification. LVNs initiate basic data collection and assessments and provide care for patients who are sick, injured, convalescing, and have physical or mental disabilities. LVNs work in medical, surgical, maternity, newborn, pediatric, and emergency departments, ambulatory, outpatient and long- term / extended care facilities.
