2 Tulare Adult School Mission Statement Tulare Adult School is committed to the vision of developing in all students the capacity to achieve personal, educational and workplace goals. Our vision is to build lifelong learners, effective communicators, and active community participants in a diverse society. Expected Schoolwide Learning Results Effective communicators who: Speak and write English in a competent manner. Receive and comprehend verbal and written direction. Interpret, analyze, and organize information from a variety of sources including technology. Tulare Adult School Book and Fee Policy.BOOKS - Students wishing to purchase books for a class may do so in the Tulare Adult School office. Charges for books are based on publisher s price plus shipping. The price for books at the Tulare Adult School ranges from under $10 to $235 per book. Book prices subject to change without notice. All books purchased in the office are new. Students can, of course, purchase used books from other students. CLASS FEES - Some classes require the charging of fees. These fees generally run between $5 to $100. Fees are used to cover the cost of processing registration, printed materials, specialized software programs, and other supplies used in class. The Tulare Adult School believes the fees are reasonable and will make every effort to keep them that way. REFUNDS - We realize plans change after registering for class. However, it is necessary to have a refund policy to help keep Tulare Adult School s costs down. 1. If you drop a class before the first meeting or if it is canceled by the Tulare Adult School, you may return books for a full refund, provided the books are in new condition with no markings. 4. Classes canceled by the Tulare Adult School will be refunded under the following circumstances: Automatic refunds will be made if the Tulare Adult School cancels the class. No fees will be carried over for classes in the future. 5. All refunds are processed through the business office. A check will be mailed to the student in approximately 10 working days from the request. FEE EXCEPTIONS - No fees or charges will be collected for English as a Second Language classes, Citizenship classes, or Adult Basic Education classes. No charges for books or fees are to be charged for high school students in classes for which high school credit is granted. Effective problem-solvers who: Possess basic computation skills. Understand and apply work ethics. Are self-motivated. 2. If you do not attend a class, you have 20 days from the beginning of the class to apply for a refund. NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE AFTER THAT DATE. 3. You must have your receipt when applying for class refunds or for book refunds. Uniform Complaint Procedures The following procedures shall be used to address all complaints, which allege that the district has violated federal or state laws or regulations governing educational programs. Blackstone Tulare, (559) Any individual, public agency, or organization may file a written complaint of alleged noncompliance with the appropriate compliance office named above. Complaints alleging unlawful discrimination may be filed by a person who alleges that he/she personally suffered unlawful discrimination or by a person who believes that an individual or any specific class of individuals has been subjected to unlawful discrimination. The compliance officer will investigate the complaint and respond in writing within 30 days of receiving the complaint. 3 Signing up is Simple WHERE TO REGISTER Just go to the main office at the Adult School campus, 575 W. Maple Ave. (across the street south of Tulare Western High School) for most courses, including all classes offered at the Pixley center. Register in person at the Adult School Office, 575 W. Maple Ave., phone: ; fax: No mail or fax registration for medical classes allowed; must register in person. WHO CAN REGISTER Anyone at least 18 years old can be a Tulare Adult School student. High school students can enroll as a concurrent student if they are at least 16 years old or a junior enrolled in high school, and have approval from their counselor, parent/guardian and the Adult School. Registration priority is given to adults. BEFORE REGISTERING In most cases you can show up at the designated location, and you will be registered. However, you must see a counselor FIRST if you are planning to: Complete your High School Diploma. Prepare and take the GED. Take vocational courses. (Referred by Calworks, Work force Investment, Proteus,and Rehab. programs) Take basic skills courses Call the Adult School office to make an appointment at WHAT IT WILL COST There is a $10 fee for every semester. There is a supply fee charged for some classes, most often $5 to $100. Students also will have to provide their own books and pay for materials in some courses. (Book prices subject to change without notice.) CANCELLATION POLICY Classes may be cancelled prior to the start of the first class meeting if the minimum number of registered students is not met. We encourage you to register early to ensure the class will be filled. CalSafe Are you a teen parent in need of a high school diploma and quality, free childcare? CalSafe is a state-funded program for teen parents who need childcare while they take courses to get a high school diploma. This excellent program: Is of no cost to students or their children. Assists students in getting the credits they need to graduate. Provides a parenting education course and a lab class for students to participate in. Provides a healthy, safe environment for your child. Provides a planned, educational program to fit the needs of each age group. Provides small group ratios in the child care center with a specific childcare worker assigned to each area. Provides daily reading to each child to enhance their language and listening skills Provides balanced meals including breakfast, lunch, and formula. Provides childcare on the same campus where the parent is enrolled in course work. Provides caregivers who are continually upgrading their skills through on-going college course work. Pass the GED and get a Better Job! The GED is a series of tests designed to determine the educational development of those who have not completed high school. This test is recognized by many companies and organizations as the equivalent of high school education necessary for employment. It also meets the diploma entrance requirements for some universities and colleges. The GED consists of timed tests covering the following subject areas: Writing Skills (two parts); Social Studies, Science, Literature and the Arts, and Mathematics. The Tulare Adult School is approved by the California State Department of Education as a GED Testing Center. All applicants must be at least 17 years and 10 months of age and have proper identification (drivers license or photo identification, California ID and Social Security Number). Testing fee is $125 for a complete test battery. Students who fail the GED Test may retake it after appropriate training. There is an additional fee for each retake. The GED test is also offered in Spanish with Spanish instruction offered in the evening. For more information regarding the GED in Spanish, please call Elizabeth Loza at Testing Adults with Disabilities POLICY: The GED Testing Program provides accommodations to candidates with disabilities and is committed to compliance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In an effort to make GED Tests accessible to all applicants, accommodations are made for candidates with diagnosed physical, mental, sensory, or learning disabilities who can provide appropriate documentation from a qualified professional of their impairment and its effect on their ability to take the GED Tests under standard conditions. A valid California ID and $30 deposit are required at the time of making your GED Test reservation for any of the test dates. For records and scores please call two weeks in advance. 4 5

4 High School Diploma Program Wish you had finished high school? It s never too late to realize your dream. The credits you earned in high school can be used toward earning a diploma through Tulare Adult Education s High School Diploma Program. Work at your own pace in a supportive and caring environment. Credentialed teachers offer individualized student attention. Class scheduling is flexible, with day and evening classes available. Call our office to make an appointment with a counselor. Night classes are offered on main campus and in Pixley. We accept credit earned from other high schools, court and continuation schools, accredited trade, and business schools. Enrollment is ongoing; new students may join us at any time. Cap and gown graduation ceremony in May. No charge for classes. Graduation Credit Requirements: English 40 credits Math Algebra Science 20 credits Fine Arts/Foreign Lang. World History U.S. History Government Economics Electives 5 credits 5 credits 80 credits Adult Secondary Education GED Test Preparation This class provides instruction and practice in lanuage arts, reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematics in preparation to take the GED. High School Credit - Open Entry. Independent Study Program An independent study program is available for students who want to pursue their high school diploma and who work full-time or otherwise cannot attend regular classes. Students must attend a one-hour class each week and complete assigned studies on their own time. If this program fits your special needs, then contact the Adult School at Open Entry. ASE/High School Diploma Program Classes are ongoing. Students enrolled in this class may complete all the necessary courses for a high school diploma. Instruction is provided in the following subject areas: English 1-4, Economics, U.S. History, Government, World History, Physical Science, Life Science, Basic Math through Algebra I, and electives (elective credit may also be earned through work experience or other means). Please call ahead for appointment with counselor. Open Entry Adult Basic Education Adult Basic Education - This program consist of individualized and group instruction at the basic level in the skills of Basic Math Beginning, Basic Math Intermediate, Basic Math Advanced, Basic Reading Beginning, Basic Reading Intermediate, Basic Reading Advanced, Practical Science, and Job readiness. High School Credit. To Qualify for a Tulare Adult School High School Diploma, a student must: Complete all district and State of California required coursework Earn a minimum of 200 credits Pass the California High School Exit Exam Have all fees and fines paid in full The Adult School office staff is here to help make your life-long learning experience a productive one. 5 Career Technical Education Culinary Arts Diploma Program This one year course is made up of five certificate classes that will be offered in sequence throughout the year. Students who successfully complete all courses New! will receive a Tulare Adult School Culinary Art Diploma. We have designed this course for students who desire to learn the concepts needed to develop a career in the food service industry. Students will be exposed to a broad range of topics including; basic cooking principles, safety and sanitation, knife skills, food preparation and production, baking and pastry, and garde manger. Students will in addition particpate in an on-site externship program working various positions to gain the hands-on training needed to enter a broad range of occupations in the food service industry. ** Books and Supplies Fee: $ tier payment plan available. Location for all classes: 395 N. K Street. Licensed Vocational Nursing Program Are you looking for a new career? Are you currently working as a certified nurse assistant and interested in upgrading your skills? The Tulare Adult School Licensed Vocational Nursing Program is for you! The Tulare Adult School s Licensed Vocational Nursing Program has been accredited by the State of California to provide the skills and knowledge that will enable the Licensed Vocational Nurse to practice in today s advanced technical work environment. The LVN program is designed for the working adult who may not be able to attend school full-time. You will receive excellent training throughout the program that have assisted previous graduates to pass the state board examination with high marks and to achieve professional success as Licensed Vocational Nurses. The following program is offered: Students attend 3 days a week for a period of 18 months of instruction. Students are responsible for program fees, textbooks and supplies. High school diploma or GED and are free from felony convictions. CNA state certificate Copy of official transcripts with a passing grade for the LVN prerequisites (medical terminology, medical math, anatomy and physiology and nutrition). Proof of being 18 years of age and a legal resident of the United States. Get an overall score in the 75th percentile or higher on the TEAS exam. Candidates can go online to to review information on the test and purchase online practice tests/study guides. Candidates who meet this criteria will be invited to apply to the program and an interview will be scheduled. Career Technical Education Business & Technology Education Business Education - Office Professional - This certificate program provides training for positions such as Secretary, Clerk Typist, Word Processor, Data Entry Clerk/Data Processing, Typist, General Clerk, Bookkeeper, Computer Operator/Literacy/Software Applications/Intro. to Internet, General Office Clerk, and Receptionist. Classes are available in business English, business math, bookkeeping, filing, and spelling. Computer applications include: Microsoft Works, Digital Imaging, QuickBooks, PowerPoint 2007, PageMaker, Excel 2007, Access 2007, Microsoft Word 2007, OutLook 2007, and the Internet. The class may be taken for as many as 1,130 hours depending on the needs of the learner and his or her objectives. No mail or fax registration. Open Entry. Allied Health Career Training No Mail or Fax in Registration for all Medical Classes. All enrollees in Medical Assisting must have a typing certificate and a diploma or GED. Students may enroll in the Office Professional program at Tulare Adult School to meet these requirements. Please contact a counselor at TAS, , if you have any questions. See description. Medical Assistant/Front & Back Office - This course will prepare students for all aspects of both front and back office medical assisting as well as extensive EKG, phlebotomy, and insurance/billing training. After successful completion students will be prepared to sit for several national certifications. Students must have completed or take concurrently Anatomy & Physiology and Medical Terminology. Immunizations and HSD required. Classes meet Monday - Thursday for 4 hours a day, 4 days a week with optional lab hours on Friday. Classes start in August and January. Please call for more information.. New Combined Program Certified Nurses Assistant This course is a 330 clock-hour classroom and clinical program. Students must complete fingerprinting, drug testing, and physical exam before starting class. Note: additional days may be added at discretion of the instructor. Home Health Aide & RNA course are available. Schedule subject to change. High School Diploma or GED required. Anatomy and Physiology Students will learn the body systems and their functions through lecture, workbook, and videotape presentations. This course is appropriate for students pursuing any study in the health care field. NOTE: Students must attend a minimum of 54 hrs. to obtain prerequisite credit for LVN program. Upon satisfactory completion, 24 CE credits available. Starting fall 2010 you must have completed CNA before starting this class. Home Health Aide This course includes theory and clinical instruction and is intended for students who have completed their CNA training and wish to continue in long-term care. Students must attend all 40 hours and should plan to purchase the textbooks by the first class meeting. 24 CE credits available. No mail or fax in registration. Restorative Nurse Assistant This 20-hour course offers additional training in the field of restorative care. Topics include feeding techniques, ambulance, ROM, and use os assistive/adaptive devices to promote greater independence with activities of daily living. 24 hrs. CE Credits Prior to being admitted to the LVN program, you MUST obtain the following: 8 9

6 Allied Health Career Training Medical Math This course will cover math concepts appropriate for vocational nursing preparation of any other branch of allied health with an emphasis on dosage calculation. This course uses the dimensional analysis and proportional methods of problem solving. Upon satisfactory completion 24 CE credits available. Entrance exam required. Please call for more information. Medical Terminology Appropriate for CNA, LVN, and medical transcriptionists. This course enables students to understand medical terms required of health care providers. Students learn word components in an interesting and logical process. Upon satisfactory completion 24 CE credits available. No mail or fax in registration. Nutrition This introductory course examines the basic concepts of nutrition and the various nutrients necessary for human maintenance, growth, and healing. The role of diet therapy and variations in diets are discussed. Calculation of intake and output and the body s need to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance are also presented. Upon satisfactory completion, 15 CE credits available. No mail or fax in regsitration. Phlebotomy This is a California approved phlebotomy course and will prepare the students for California certification. This course is for students new to phlebotomy and consists of approximately 72 hrs. of classroom instruction and 40 hrs. of extern. High school diploma/ged and current immunizations required. Please call for more information. Students must be able to extern during the day for 5 consecutive days. No mail or fax in registration. NCCT Testing National Certification Testing is available in phlebotomy, medical assisting (front & back office) and insurance & billing specialist. TAS is an approved testing site. Tests are administered on Saturday, beginning at 6:00pm. Fee is $90. Contact Kelly Collins at for more information. Industrial Technology Training Combination Welding Open Entry. This 1,235 hour class is designed to prepare the trainee as a certified welder. It includes training in gas and arc welding, cutting, planning, TIG, and MIG. The course is approved by the State Department of Education for Veterans Benefits High School Elective Credit.. (Students must provide their own helmet and safety glasses.) Application forms are provided. To prepare for the examination, students are taught the principles of American history and government at the national, state, and local levels. English as a Second Language and Civic Education The following courses are designed for students with limited English literacy skills. Emphasis will be on learning English to be more involved in your community. Primary goals are to provide students with basic communication and survival skills. The courses are offered at the Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. Placement will be determined by evaluation of intake assessments administered at time of registration. (Call Connie Gonzales Ext. 27) for an appointment; Monday through Wednesday. All classes are open-entry which are year around with no fees. Citizenship Preparation Distance Learning/Learn English at Home! You can learn English at home through our Distance Learning Program. If you are unable to attend classes at our campus, the Distance Learning Program offers beginning and intermediate ESL students an opportunity to learn English in the privacy of your own surroundings by our video checkout system.
