Message from the Superintendent Welcome to Fresno Adult School. We offer a wide variety of courses and programs that not only seek to provide opportunities for life-long learning for adults, but to help parents support the academic achievement of their students. I commend your interest in pursuing adult education, and I hope that through our offerings in General Education Development (GED), English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), Career Technical Education (CTE), High School Diploma, Community Education and Parent University we can assist you in your pursuit of learning. I am especially excited about the collaborative relationship between Fresno Adult School and Parent University, which is in its second year of offering courses to empower, engage and connect families to support student achievement. Through programs like Parent University, Fresno Unified continues to invest in classes that allow our community to become more skillful in assisting their children reach their full academic potential. Fresno Unified School District Policies Sexual Harassment Policy Fresno Unified School District promotes an environment supportive of gender equity (Title IX) and free from any form of sexual discrimination or harassment. The governing Board prohibits sexual harassment of or by any student or employee. This policy applies to conduct during and relating to school and school-sponsored activities. No Smoking Policy The use of all tobacco products is prohibited on all Fresno Unified School District campuses. Complaint Procedure The FUSD Board of Education has established a policy for filing complaints concerning school personnel. The policy is posted in each room and can be obtained in the Fresno Adult School office. Fresno Adult School ESL Policy ESL classes include seven different levels of instruction including citizenship classes. FUSD shall establish adult classes in English upon receipt of applications from 25 or more persons older than eighteen years of age who reside in the district and who cannot speak, read, or write the English language to a degree of proficiency equal to that required for the completion of grade eight (EC 52540).

Located in Room 108, students can take advantage of a wide variety of services offered, which include, tutoring, computers, text books and career planning. Students can study and use the center s computers for class projects and to locate community resources. Staff is available to answer questions and to help the students reach their goals. The SAC connects students to services and resources that help them address personal, health, academic and career issues by offering regularly scheduled workshops and guest speakers on campus. Tutoring is available for High School Diploma, GED, Adult Basic Education, Career & Technical Education, and English as a Second Language. JOB DEVELOPMENT Theresa Sanchez, Fresno Adult School s Job Developer, is available to assist students with their career planning. She is available to help students with their interview skills, update resumes, and help plan career paths. ADULT BASIC EDUCATION & GED TEST PREPARATION Fresno Adult School offers GED Test Preparation classes in English and Spanish to those who do not have a high school diploma and are interested in earning a high school equivalency certification. After passing all 5 sections of the GED examination, you will receive a GED test credential. Seating is limited and pre-registration is REQUIRED before the date you wish to test. 21 PARENT UNIVERSITY Strand 1 Parent Education This strand provides workshops and training to cover child development as a child enters preschool through 12th grade and beyond. Topics such as creating a home environment conducive to learning, discipline, and communication strategies to help families become their child s first and foremost teacher will be included. Baseline Parent Learning Module The Parent University Baseline Module Parent Learning Program consists of 8 sessions to train and inform families about Fresno Unified School District strategies and procedures. The Module provides an overview of the District, student learning environment, and district resources available for families to support student achievement. Babysitting available. Courses are offered in English and other languages as needed.. Session 1: Guiding Documents Provides an overview of the District policies that guide student learning. Topics: Magnet programs, GATE, IB, AP, CTE, and AVID. Session 7: Parents as Partners Offers research-based best practices and strategies for families to support their child s education. Baseline Parent Learning Modules help students and families understand what is available and how to access programs and services. PARENT UNIVERSITY Fresno Adult School WINTER/SPRING Atlas Parent Portal Training ATLAS is the new Fresno Unified student information system. The Parent Portal is the website which provides real-time student data including schedules, attendance, and grades. Training will provide parents with a unique Parent ID and password for each child enrolled in FUSD. Babysitting available upon request. Courses offered in English and other languages as needed. Constituent Services: A Tool Chest This course provides parents/families with information on how to resolve a problem at an FUSD school site. The presentation takes parents through the chain of command on the school site to quickly resolve issues at the lowest level possible. Magnet Schools: What Makes Them Special? Introduces families to the various FUSD magnet school programs offered in grades K-12. Finding the Right School for My Child This workshop will give parents information to help them find data about FUSD schools. Homelessness/Poverty: Issues Affecting Children and Families This course covers the effects of poverty and how children are the fastest growing segment in the homeless population. Foster Care/FUSD Services for Foster Youth This course informs foster parents and group home staff about laws pertaining to foster youth. Knowing the Basics of an IEP This course helps parents better understand an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Elementary Mathematics 1. How to Help My Own Child with Math K/1: Ideas on how to build and support mathematical concepts. 2. Math in the Home: Strategies to strengthen mathematical understanding at home. 3. Mathematics in school: Informs parents of Math Lesson Design (MLD) and Beyond Basic Facts (BBF) used in Gr Elementary English Language Arts 1. Frontloading in Elementary: Understand the purpose and teaching strategies of frontloading and how it supports learning. 2. The following daytime classes, held at the Manchester Center location, are available to seniors, 55 years and older, at a highly discounted rate of 50% - 70% off listed fees.
