WELCOME WE WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME YOU TO THE THIRD ALL-WEATHER CHAMPIONSHIPS The All-Weather Championships, especially the 1.1 million Finals Day at Lingfield Park on Good Friday, are now an established part of the British Horseracing Calendar. While the All-Weather Championships were initially the idea of Arena Racing Company (ARC), everyone at ARC is enormously grateful to the support we have received from all in British Horseracing in helping ensure the All-Weather Championships have proved a success from the outset. A particular thanks goes to the British Horseracing Authority and the horsemen for their support, the European Breeders Fund, which financially supports many races across the All-Weather Championships season and Chelmsford City, Kempton Park, Dundalk, Cagnes-sur-Mer and Deauville racecourses. We would also like to show our gratitude to our four sponsors, Coral, Ladbrokes, 32Red and Unibet, who were at the forefront of showing support for the All-Weather Championships. Our media partner, At The Races, has provided exciting coverage from day one and we look forward to Channel 4 broadcasting Finals Day next March live from Lingfield Park. As we enter the third season of the All-Weather Championships we can all look forward to enjoying another winter of exciting racing ahead of crowning seven new Champions on Good Friday. Everyone at ARC hopes you find this information pack a useful guide to the All-Weather Championships. Martin Cruddace Chief Executive, ARC #awchamps

THE ALL-WEATHER CHAMPIONSHIPS The All-Weather Championships will run from Thursday 29 October 2015 to Friday 25 March 2016 and include every all-weather race held at Lingfield Park, Southwell Racecourse, Wolverhampton Racecourse, Kempton Park and Chelmsford City Racecourse. The All-Weather Championships celebrates its stars at Lingfield Park on Finals Day, Good Friday, 25 March 2016, when the Finals to the seven Championship Categories that make up the All-Weather Championships are held. As we move into the third season the aim of the All-Weather Championships remains the same: to improve the race programme and prestige of all-weather racing. All-weather racing is an exciting sport to follow, engaging racegoers, bookmakers, punters and horsemen throughout the year, especially through the winter months. The All-Weather Championships are helping give the sport the profile it deserves with the practical benefits this brings to the sport, including ensuring more horses staying in training over the winter, boosting field sizes, betting turnover and adding to the excitement of British Racing. 11 LINGFIELD PARK RACECOURSE In 1982 the new owners installed flood defences on the estate to alleviate flooding. A golf course was developed and this opened in June Arena Leisure Plc purchased the course in 1991 and in 2001 made the decision to replace the Equitrack All-Weather surface with Polytrack, opening later that same year. BUILT: 1890 TRACK: NEW POLYTRACK IN 2012 TRACK LENGTH: 1M 2F FEATURES: SHARP, WITH SOME DOWNHILL Lingfield Park launched the newly resurfaced Polytrack in October 2012, showing their commitment to the future growth of All-Weather Racing in the UK. This latest investment, complemented by the recent regeneration of this famous racecourse (construction of a 5.5 million grandstand and 4* Marriott Hotel in 2004) puts Lingfield Park firmly on the map as a major state-ofthe-art racing, conference and leisure destination with facilities to match or better any in the country. The All-Weather track runs around the inside of the turf. It is a left-handed loop and follows much the same line as the turf course in the home straight and the back straight, but turns sharply for home at the end of the back straight and is 1m 2f in length. The track gently rises to a slight hill at the start of the back straight before running downhill around the bottom corner and into the home straight where it levels off. The result is that the 1m, 7f, 6f and 5f starts are all downhill which contributes to Lingfield being the sharpest of the All-Weather tracks. Best known as a winter All-Weather Flat course, Lingfield Park also stages Flat Racing in the summer and National Hunt, both on turf. Located in a 450-acre (1.8 km) estate and opened in 1890 by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), who also agreed to let Lingfield Park incorporate the Prince of Wales feathers into its official heading, the course initially held Jumps Racing only. In 1894 The Jockey Club granted permission for Flat Racing to be held and it has continued ever since.
WOLVERHAMPTON RACECOURSE In 2004 the Fibresand and turf tracks were replaced by the current Polytrack surface. The course is an oval of just over 1m in circumference with tight left-handed turns and a short run in. The course also has additional chutes for 6f and 7f races. BUILT: 1887 TRACK: NEW TAPETA IN 2014 TRACK LENGTH: 1M FEATURES: FLOODLIT Located on the outskirts of Wolverhampton City Centre at Dunstall Park, Wolverhampton Racecourse was Britain s first floodlit racetrack, and brings you the thrills of racing day and night. With nearly 100 race fixtures per year, Wolverhampton is the UK s busiest racecourse. A new Tapeta surface was installed in August This is the first Tapeta racing surface in Europe and its introduction has been widely praised by trainers and jockeys who report it to be a safe and fair surface for horses. Tapeta uses a selection of specifically blended fibres, waxes, PVC and sand to a depth of up to seven inches. The first Tapeta surface was pioneered by Michael Dickinson and his wife Joan Wakefield over fifteen years ago. Three other racecourses in the world use Tapeta: Golden Gate Fields, San Francisco, Presque Isle Downs, Pennsylvania in the USA and Tapeta Park in Devonport, Tasmania in Australia. Wolverhampton has hosted horse race meetings since The racecourse moved to the current Dunstall Park venue at the end of the 1920 s, originally hosting both jump and Flat Racing on the turf. In 1993 there was a complete overhaul of the track and a Fibresand surface was laid alongside the turf track. Floodlights were also added to allow for evening racing. History was made when the first ever British horserace took place under those floodlights in 1993.
SOUTHWELL RACECOURSE BUILT: 1898 TRACK: FIBRESAND TRACK LENGTH: 1M 2F FEATURES: FIBRESAND SURFACE Southwell Racecourse has been hosting horse racing meetings since The course now holds over 50 race meetings per year, both on the Flat All-Weather track and the National Hunt turf course. Located near Newark-on-Trent, and set in 145 acres of beautiful Nottinghamshire countryside, it is the only one of the four All-Weather tracks in the UK with a unique Fibresand surface - a mixture of sand and elastic fibres, a very different riding characteristic to the Polytrack surface at Kempton Park and Lingfield Park. The All-Weather track is oval with tight bends at either end and a long 3f straight on the run in. It runs around the outside of the National Hunt turf course. All races are run in a left handed and in an anti-clockwise direction. The oval is of a mile-and-a-quarter for the round course, the bends have a slight camber built into them. The 2f spur means Southwell is the only All-Weather straight 5f course in the country. The All-Weather track was resurfaced with new Fibresand in 2013 after local flooding saw the course underwater.
KEMPTON PARK RACECOURSE It was an exciting project for Kempton Park and the racing industry and has proven to be a beneficial business for its owners The Jockey Club and bookmakers, offering a TPF of 4.8milliion of which 3.4million is dedicated to the All- Weather in BUILT: 1878 TRACK: NEW POLYTRACK IN 2006 REFURBISHED JULY 2012 TRACK LENGTH: 10F (OUTER) AND 8F (INNER) FEATURES: FLOODLIT OVAL Kempton Park opened for racing in 1878 when businessman Henry Hyde passed the site in Sunbury on Thames and identified it as the perfect location for a new racecourse in the UK. The racecourse enjoyed an illustrious history with high quality Flat and Jump races run over the turf surface, but on 2 May 2005 the history of racing at Kempton Park changed when the last Flat race on turf, The Jubilee Handicap was run and the gates closed for the development of an 18.8million ten furlong, floodlit All-Weather track. Located within the historic Jump track, the ten furlong, oval polytrack is right-handed with a bend radius of 137m. The track is 20m wide in the home straight with a false rail at the 2 ¼ pole which helps a trouble free passage to the winning post. Kempton Park also boasts the first fully retractable floodlighting system used on a racecourse. Of the 42 floodlights that illuminate the track, 28 of the poles have the ability to lay Flat to the ground ensuring the view of daytime Flat and Jump Racing is not compromised. Refurbished in by British company Martin Collins Enterprises, who designed the surface specifically for Kempton Park tonnes of original specification polytrack with additional fibre and wax was added to the course. This has rejuvenated the track and extends its performance and longevity.
CHELMSFORD CITY RACECOURSE BUILT: NEW TRACK AND GRANDSTAND BUILT IN 2014 TRACK: POLYTRACK TRACK LENGTH: 1M ALL-WEATHER OVAL FEATURES: BHA DESIGNED OVAL WITH ADDITIONAL 1M TURF TRACK( YET TO BE OPENED), FULL FLOODLIGHTING. The All-Weather Polytrack racetrack is a 8 furlong left handed oval with large sweeping bends. The track measures 22 metres in width and finishes with a 2 furlong home straight. Top trainers have recently been using the track to work their horses. This has led to the venue being highly praised by the sports leading lights John Gosden, Lady Cecil and Sir Michael Stoute as one of the best racing surfaces around and in excellent working condition. Future work on the track includes the addition of a seven furlong chute planned for spring 2015 and a state of the art turf track to follow. The track is illuminated by the distinctive champagne flute flood lights exclusive to Chelmsford City Racecourse. Viewing the racing is well catered for with many great vantage points around the venue. Formerly known as Great Leighs Racecourse and officially re-opening as Chelmsford City Racecourse in January Chelmsford City Racecourse is the only horse racing venue in Essex. The racecourse is an exciting new addition to UK racing and Chelmsford City Racecourse is delighted to host nearly 60 fixtures in 2016 with a mixture of afternoon, twilight and evening racing.
