After coming here on Open Day, I just loved the rural setting of Mt Helen compared to other universities. Being able to see these facilities, demonstrations and talk to people was really helpful. One of my favourite classes is biomechanics. We have got lots of practical experience using specialised equipment and have been able to design and implement our own research project. My career goal is to work in the area of biomechanics, working with elite athletes in a setting such as the AIS and publish literature on my findings. The placements in my unit have included school camps, volunteering at sporting events, sports training, fitness coach and many research placements. The great thing about placement is you have a variety of areas you can work in and you get practical experience. There have been a lot of other highlights whilst studying. In my first year I participated in the Southern Uni Games (in netball). The whole week was so much fun, spending all of the days playing netball and the nights spent with my team mates. Another highlight has been living on Res. I have made so many lifelong friends and there were so many opportunities and activities to get involved in FED UNI federation.edu.au/programfinder 9

13 Physical Education Success Stories Sarah Bourke Bachelor of Education (Physical Education) Teaching in Western Samoa Growing up in a country town in Gippsland, called Leongatha, sport was a huge part of everyone s life. I grew up knowing firsthand the importance of being fit and active, and I wanted to teach PE as I loved it at school and was sports mad, really. One of the biggest highlights of my degree was a teaching round in Western Samoa. It was my first time overseas and I loved learning and living in another culture, and definitely gave me a taste for travel! I enjoyed living on campus, as it gave me the chance to meet friends from other units and had an active social life which I am quite partial to! I currently work at the North Melbourne Football Club as the course development manager at The Huddle, which is the community arm of the club. What I really love about my job is the diverse nature of the role, and the fact that I work in a truly progressive and innovative football club, where the culture and engagement of players within the community is second to none. Every day is different and I feel like I get to use my training and development skills every day, developing new ideas and courses for implementation. I spend a lot of time with people, working on relationships with key partners and looking at ways to make an idea a reality. 16 Physical Education Success Stories Clancy Merrett Bachelor of Education (Physical Education) An International Scholarship in England Physical education was always a favourite subject of mine through VCE, so I felt that continuing with study in the same area felt like the best fit for me. A lot of my PE teachers highly recommended the university and many of them completed the same unit I was looking into. There were a number of definite highlights throughout my studies at uni. The challenge that came with moving away from home and meeting new people was so exciting. I was also lucky enough to complete teaching rounds at four different schools. This included an international scholarship which allowed me to spend three weeks at The King s School in Worcester, England. It was a wonderful experience and allowed me to travel across England and Europe for the first time. I m currently teaching physical education and mathematics at a secondary school from years 7 to 12. I love coming to a workplace each day that is ever-changing and unpredictable. My placements and theory at uni prepared me for what I am doing now. I ve achieved a lot since graduating including completing a one year emerging leaders course within my workplace. I now work in a position of leadership as the year 9 and 10 learning coordinator. I would really encourage future students to choose a unit in an area that you find interesting and enjoyable. This will mean you love going to work every day! Clancy graduated from the Bachelor of Education (Physical Education). 19 Sport Management Success Stories Mahney Lowe Bachelor of Sport Management Balance is a real key to success I ve always loved sport and had been involved as an athlete and volunteer for many years. I have a passion for leadership and women in sport. When choosing what and where to study, Mt Helen was close to home and had a good reputation for providing high quality sport courses. The sport management unit features a six month internship and I was lucky enough to secure a high performance internship with Netball Australia. It was a truly great experience and gave me insight into what is involved at the national level of a Commonwealth Games sport. Following my internship, I was offered a full-time marketing role with Netball Australia, and nine months later was further promoted to national event coordinator. As well as being a huge personal achievement, these roles have allowed me to demonstrate my ability to lead and take on an incredible amount of responsibility. I travel around the country to facilitate Netball Australia s National Events course. I m in charge of under 17, under 19 and under 21 National Netball Championships, Australian Netball League, NetFest (mass participation event) and I m involved with the Test Series (international event). I m involved in all phases of the events from pre-planning, planning, implementation and evaluation. Balance is a real key to success at uni and beyond. I encourage future students to enjoy the experience, be social, study hard, laugh and be able to accept criticism. Erin Riley Bachelor of Sport Management Challenging and fun! During year 12 I had no idea what I wanted to do when I finished school, other than I wanted to continue study. I have always had a strong interest in sport, so I decided to look into units related to sport and health. I came across the Bachelor of Sport Management in the university course guide and was immediately drawn to the idea of working in the industry I love. The Bachelor of Sport Management was only being offered at a few universities when I was applying. I wasn t keen on the idea of moving to Melbourne, so the fact I would be staying in regional Victoria made my decision easy. I ve experienced a lot from undertaking placement, trips to facilities and undertaken a 6 month internship. Class trips have provided opportunities to listen and talk to the managers behind the scenes. I have also been fortunate enough to complete industry placements at the University Games, Teacher Games and local football clubs. These experiences have allowed me to gain greater insight into what s required to work in the sport industry and strengthened my ability to network. I m really excited about what the future holds. I m very passionate about delivering sport development courses to children to increase physical activity participation. I hope I m able to work within a state or national organisation such as Auskick, Netsetgo or Hotshots. This unit has been so challenging, but so much fun. I have loved learning new things every day I come to university FED UNI federation.edu.au/programfinder 17

21 Hannah Kennedy Bachelor of Sport Management/ Bachelor of Business Be a yes person Whilst studying a different career path at a different institution, I was given the opportunity to participate in a ski camp with the Special Olympics Victoria where I was an on-snow carer. I was seriously considering changing degrees, but wasn t completely sure. Someone told me something on that snow trip that has stuck in my mind ever since. Do something you already enjoy doing. I had seven hours sitting on a bus home from that snow trip and by the time I returned back to Melbourne, I had decided. I chose to change universities and pursue a career in sports development, specifically in disability winter sports. I m now in my 4th year of study in sport management and I can honestly say that there have been so many highlights and benefits, both from an academic and social point of view. I ve had the opportunity to complete some amazing placement at Special Olympics Victoria (State Snowsports Coordinator), FFV VCL (Team Manager/Assistant Coach U17 Girls Team), Hockey Victoria (Sport Development Assistant), Ski and Snowboard Australia/ Australian Cross Country Ski Team (Sponsorship Consultant) and I m currently completing my internship at the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia. I really urge future students to take every opportunity they can. Be a yes person and actively seek out every chance to gain experience. You never know how that might snowball into something amazing!
