2 Welcome and Introductions Approval of Previous Meeting Mission Statement Special Introduction Tobacco Education Program Update Community Transformation Grant Update Meeting began with introductions at 9:15am. of March 14, 2012 were approved by consensus. Mission statement was read by Carolyn Martin. Carolyn introduced the Sacramento County Medical Officer, Dr. Olivia Kasirye to TCC members. Dr. Kasirye wants to support the coalition and be involved in any way she can. Presented by Yvonne Rodriguez, TEP Coordinator Yvonne passed out TCC Recruitment Postcards and encouraged TCC members to continue to pass out these postcards to recruit new members. All TCC members need to fill out a new membership application if they haven t done so already. TEP budget was cut, however the program will still be operating with 4 objectives. Presented by Kimberly Bankston-Lee, Breathe Ca CDC multiyear grant administered by Sierra Health. For more details on this grant, visit the Sierra Health Foundation s website at: Dian with SHARE and Kimberly Bankston-Lee went to CTG meeting in April o Data will be collected and analyzed for 18 months o Sierra Health is fully staffed and bringing a leadership team together o CDC is offering trainings o From this point forward, there will be monthly workgroups o Mini Grants will come out this summer for community assessment activities 2 of 5
3 Social Media 201 Presentation Presented by Alex Tyannikov, Breathe California Alex presented on the importance of integrating social media into tobacco control efforts o Alex presented on the different types of social media and number of users o Social media is here to stay o We need to build social capitol o Like Us on Facebook- TCC has a Facebook change. Alex encouraged all TCC members to Like this page and join in on conversation by posting comments Subcommittee Updates Second Hand Smoke- 1) Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center, Presented by Thao Duong a. Trying to pass a policy to ban outdoor smoking b. May 24 th - youth premiere 2) SOL, presented by Twlia Laster a. May 20- Fruit and Veggie Fair- to assist community members with cessation through motivational interviewing b. May 31- Town Hall Meeting to address tobacco in the African American community and hypnotherapy as an alternative to stop smoking, losing weight and managing stress. c. June 19 th is Juneteenth Event d. Meadowview tobacco butt clean up 3) WIN, Presented by Theresa Boschert a. Elk Grove senior living-city Council Hearing- did not pass an ordinance as they felt this was an issue management should work with residents. Instead management announced a policy which was very weak. Smokers will be grandfathered indefinitely. Residents were told that any smoke damage caused by smokers is to be paid for by the resident of the unit which has smoke damage, even if that resident is a non-smoker. 4 Youth and Young Adult: 1) San Juan Unified School District, Presented by Jayna Record. a. SJUSD is wrapping up the end of the year b. Teen Intervene- Sac State interns helping out with recruiting new interns now. c. Don t Buy the Lie reception on May 29 th for students who participant in anti-smoking ads. 2) CSUS, Student Health and Counseling Services, Presented by Lindsay Wetzel a. Still waiting to form a task force. Have faculty identified but waiting to determine schedules. 3) TEP, presented by Kate Frantz a. Sac State interns are graduating and TEP is currently seeking new interns. b. Interns worked very hard this past semester, building awareness on campus of the benefits of a tobacco-free campus. 4) STAND, presented by Alex Tyannikov a. Folsom Lake College collected 2,606 butts on their campus clean up. b. Cosumnes River College collected 1,080 butts on their campus clean up Tobacco Retail Licensing Task Force 1) Presented by Yvonne Rodriguez, Sacramento County TEP a. YPS is scheduled for May 18 and 19 Cessation: 1) Presented by Phuoc, UC Davis Intern a. Starting in June clients will be screened for smoking at two student run clinics. Medical students received Motivational Interview (MI) training from Dr Tong. Clients may be referred to the Ca Smokers Helpline and/or receive a free quit kit. 4 of 5
5 Code Enforcement Update Policy Updates School District Updates Other Business Next Meeting Adjournment Presented by Yvonne for Anne, Sac County Code Enforcement Anne has a new job assignment, thus unable to make all the TCC meetings. She will forward TEP staff important information/updates to share. Presented by Carolyn, TCC Chair 1) Sacramento City- The ordinance banning any new tobacco retail establishment within 1,000 feet of a school will be voted on May 22, TCC members will testify and a letter of support will be sent on behalf of the coalition. Presented by Lindsey, Center for Tobacco Policy and Organizing 2) Lindsey filling in behind Justin (who left for another position with March of Dimes). 3) AB 1738: Health Care Coverage: Tobacco Cessation did not meet the April 27, 2012 deadline and will not move further until next year. Presented by J, Elk Grove Unified School District 1) J is new TUPE staff working on end of school year projects. 1) Yvonne announced that CSUS Nursing Department is looking to place nursing students in the community to gain experience. They are not looking to provide direct clinical services.
