Eligibility for Application [General Selection] Eligibility applies to those who meet any of the following criteria (or will meet one of the criteria by March 31, 2011): (1) University graduates; (2) Holders of academic degrees conferred by the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation of Japan in compliance with the provisions of Article 104, Item 4 of the School Law of Japan (Law No. 26 of 1947); (3) Those who have completed 16 years of formal school education outside Japan; (4) Those who have completed 16 years of formal school education in the educational system of another country by completing in Japan a correspondence course operated by an educational establishment instituted in the other country; (5) Those who have completed an applicable curriculum in an educational establishment that is located in Japan, that is recognized as offering undergraduate courses in the educational system of another country (only educational establishments whose graduates are recognized as having completed 16 years of formal education in the educational system of that country), and that is designated as such by the Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan; (6) Those who have completed, on or after the date designated by the Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, a specialized curriculum of a vocational school (only vocational schools whose period of education is four years or longer and that fulfill criteria stipulated by the same Minister) that is recognized as such by the Minister; (7) Those appointed by the Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (Notification No. 5 of the Ministry of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology on February 7, 1953); (8) Those who have entered a postgraduate program in compliance with the provisions of Article 102, Item 2 of the School Law of Japan, and who have been recognized by the relevant Graduate School of Hiroshima University as having academic ability appropriate for receiving postgraduate education; (9) Those who are 22 years of age or older as of March 31 in 2011, and have been recognized through an individual admission screening process by the relevant Graduate School of Hiroshima University as having academic ability equivalent to that of a university graduate; (10) Those who have studied at a university for a period of three years or longer (including those who are recognized by the Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan as having academic ability equivalent thereto) and have demonstrated excellent academic performance in courses designated by the relevant Graduate School of Hiroshima University; i) Those appointed by the Notification No. 5 of the Ministry of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (February 7, 1953) means those who are 22 years of age or older with the specialized certificate and/or the first class standard certificates for educational personnel in elementary schools, lower and upper secondary schools, kindergartens, or protective care in compliance with the al Personnel Certification Law or the like. ii) Applicants falling under categories (8), (9) or (10) are required to contact the Student Support Office in the Graduate School of and submit the necessary documents by December 13 (Mon). iii) Those who apply for the Advanced Teacher Training Courses are required to obtain one of the first class standard certificates for educational personnel in elementary schools, lower and upper secondary schools by the time of enrolment. However, those who apply for the Advanced Teacher Training Course in the Curriculum and Instruction Development need to get the first class standard certificates for educational personnel in elementary schools by the time of enrolment. iv) Those who apply for the Advanced Teacher Training Course of the al Studies are restricted to incumbent teachers with more than ten years teaching experience excluding the periods as a part-time teacher or a fixed-term full-time teacher at the time of enrolment. [Special Selection for Students in Employment] Eligibility applies to those who meet any of the following criteria, and who have spent a period of two years or longer in employment since obtaining the eligibility criteria (1) to (8): (1) University graduates; (2) Holders of academic degrees conferred by the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation of Japan in compliance with the provisions of Article 104, Item 4 of the School Law of Japan (Law No. 26 of 1947); (3) Those who have completed 16 years of formal school education outside Japan; (4) Those who have completed 16 years of formal school education in the educational system of another country by completing in Japan a correspondence course operated by an educational establishment instituted in the other country; (5) Those who have completed an applicable curriculum in an educational establishment that is located in Japan, that is recognized as offering undergraduate courses in the educational system of another country (only educational establishments whose graduates are recognized as having completed 16 years of formal education in the educational system of that country), and that is specifically so designated by the Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan; (6) Those who have completed, on or after the date designated by the Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, a specialized curriculum of a vocational school (only vocational schools whose period of education is four years or longer and that fulfill criteria stipulated by the same Minister) that is recognized as such by the Minister; - 19-

3 (7) Those appointed by the Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (Notification No. 5 of the Ministry of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology on February 7, 1953); (8) Those who have entered a postgraduate program in compliance with the provisions of Article 102, Item 2 of the School Law of Japan, and who have been recognized by the relevant Graduate School of Hiroshima University as having academic ability appropriate for receiving postgraduate education; (9) Those who are 25 years of age or older as of March 31 in 2011, and have been recognized through an individual admission screening process by the relevant Graduate School of Hiroshima University as having academic ability equivalent to that of a university graduate; i) Applicants for the Phoenix Admission System (the special selection for senior citizens aged sixty and above by March 31, 2011) are those who are expected to have achieved one of the above eligibility criteria by March 31 in 2011, or those who have studied at a university for a period of three years or longer (including those who are recognized by the Minister of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan as having academic ability equivalent thereto) and have demonstrated excellent academic performance in courses designated by the relevant Graduate School of Hiroshima University; ii) Those appointed by the Notification No. 5 of the Ministry of, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (February 7, 1953) are those who are 22 years of age or older with the specialized certificate and/or the first class standard certificates for educational personnel in elementary schools, lower and upper secondary schools, kindergartens, or protective care in compliance with the al Personnel Certification Law or the like. iii) Applicants falling under categories (8), (9) or the Phoenix Admission System are required to contact the Student Support Office in the Graduate School of and submit the necessary documents by December 13 (Mon). iv) Those who apply for the Advanced Teacher Training Courses are required to obtain one of the first class standard certificates for educational personnel in elementary schools, lower and upper secondary schools by the time of enrolment. 4 3. Application Procedure (1) Application Period From January 4 (Tue) to January 7 (Fri), 2011 (with a deadline of 5 p.m.) The documents must arrive at Hiroshima University by the above deadline. (2) Address for Submitting the Application Documents Student Support Office (Graduate Program) Graduate School of, Hiroshima University Kagamiyama, Higashi-Hiroshima JAPAN (3) Application Documents a) Admission Application Form (Use the prescribed form.) b) Academic Transcript and the Certificate of (Expected) Graduation, issued by a university or college president, or dean c) Summary of Previous Study (Use the prescribed form; and provide a summary of your undergraduate thesis (or research proposal for future graduates) or of your research between your graduation and the present, within 1500 Japanese characters.) d) Research Proposal (Use the prescribed form; and give an outline of your research proposal for our graduate school, within 1500 Japanese characters.) However, only those who apply for the Advanced Teacher Training Course of the al Studies must submit a study plan, (including the applicant s educational issues, what the applicant would like to learn in the program, and the significance of the applicant s study in our program to their future career, within 1500 Japanese characters). e) Examination Fee of 30,000 Japanese Yen (Not applicable for the Japanese Government Scholarship Students (excluding Japanese studies students and teacher training students)) Fill out the applicant s name in the two parts on the left side of the presented payment form, and both name (in both romaji and furigana) and address in the right-hand section (comprising the payment transfer receipt to paste on the admission application form, receipt for custody, and application form for payment transfer), and pay for the examination fee at a bank. (If applicants transfer the fee via Japan Post Bank or Japan Post Network (hereinafter referred to as JP Bank ), they need to transcribe necessary information from the university format to the one prescribed by JP Bank. Please ask what to do in detail at JP Bank while showing the prescribed payment form. And also, please note that ATMs can not be used for transferring the fee at any bank including JP Bank.) Applicants must pay the transfer handling charge. Only payment receipts with a bank stamp dated on or before January 7, 2011 (the final day of the application period) shall be recognized as valid for an application document. Therefore, applicants are advised to check banking hours before making the transfer. The payment transfer receipt (money transfer certificate) should be attached to the admission application form to be submitted. Please contact the cashier of the Accounting Group, Hiroshima University ( for domestic calls in Japan, or for calls from outside Japan), if you don t submit the application documents after paying for examination fee. f) Those who apply for the special selection for students in employment must submit their educational and research work record (Use the prescribed form to state your work record such as books, research papers, research reports, presentations or reports about teaching practice, works of art, and other matters which you consider to be of importance). However, it is not necessary for applicants in the Phoenix Admission System to submit this record. g) Address Sheet (Use the prescribed form.) h) Return envelope with the applicant s name and address (standard size, cm, with an 90 stamp, for sending the Exam Admission Card) i) Foreign applicants residing in Japan must submit the Certificate of Alien Registration issued by the local Mayor/Head of the local government. j) Applicants who work in a school, public office, or company must submit the letter of acceptance (the prescribed form is not required) for taking the examination by the Head of their organization, if they would like to take temporary leave from their workplace to enter into the Graduate School of, while remaining incumbent. k) Those who apply for the Advanced Teacher Training Courses are required to submit a copy of the first class standard certificates for educational personnel, or the certificate of its expected acquisition, in elementary schools, lower and upper secondary schools. However, those who apply for the Advanced Teacher Training Course in the Curriculum and Instruction Development need to submit a copy of the first class standard certificates for educational personnel, or the certificate of its expected acquisition, in elementary schools. l) In the general selection and the special selection for students in employment, applicants falling under category (2) of the eligibility criteria must submit the degree certificate issued by the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation of Japan, or a certificate stating intent to apply for a Bachelor s degree by the president of the applicant s junior college or technical/vocational college. i) Foreign applicants must submit a curriculum vitae as well as other application documents. ii) Certificates or other documents written in a language other than Japanese must have a Japanese translation attached to the original documents. iii) If the applicant s name or other personal information are different from those in other certificates, please attach a document which certifies the name change. iv) Any personal information (full name, date of birth, sex, etc) acquired through this application shall be used for the purposes of admission selection, notification of the results, and entrance procedures. Hiroshima University shall manage the data of those who have been admitted for the purposes of student support (scholarship application, tuition waiver applications, etc) and research (improvement of entrance exams, surveys and analysis of applicant trends, etc). This data will not be used for any other purpose, nor provided to any third party. However, following agreement on the appropriate use of personal information, there may be cases whereby related use for data processing is entrusted to companies outside the university. (4) Application Method Applicants must submit all the above documents together within the application period. For mail submitters, the application should be posted by registered express mail with the words Application Documents for the Graduate School of Enclosed written in red on the envelope. Application documents delivered after 5 p.m. on January 7 (Fri) will be accepted only if postmarked not later than January 5 (Wed), except for international mails. The Student Support Office is available for applicants to bring their application documents directly from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m

5 (5) Application Method for Applicants with Physical Disabilities or Other Special Considerations Applicants with physical disabilities or others who require special considerations when taking the examination or studying must submit an application form for advance consultation (there is no prescribed form). a) The application for advance consultation must be submitted by December 13 (Mon), b) The application for advance consultation must contain the following information: i) Name, address and telephone number (if available, write down mobile phone number as well) ii) Name of the university or college from which the applicant graduated iii) Type and degree of disability (a doctor s statement will be required for applicants currently under medical treatment) iv) Special considerations when taking the examination v) Special considerations when studying after admission vi) Special considerations provided at the prior university or college vii) Current situation in daily life 4. Method of Selection [General Selection] The results of the academic ability examination (written and oral examinations), and the academic transcript will be taken into consideration in the evaluation to determine successful applicants. [Special Selection for Students in Employment] The results of the academic ability examination (written and oral examinations), the educational and research work record, the research proposal (the study plan for those who apply for the Advanced Teacher Training Course of the al Studies), and academic transcripts will all be taken into consideration in the evaluation to determine successful applicants. Applicants in the Phoenix Admission System will be evaluated and selected based on the results of the academic ability examination (written and oral examinations), the research proposal, and the academic transcript. [Special Selection for International Students] The results of the academic ability examination (written and oral examinations), and the academic transcript will be taken into consideration in the evaluation to determine successful applicants. (1) Subjects in Written Examinations and the Point Allocation [Only for Applicants in the General Selection AND in the Special Selection for International Students] For Japanese applicants, select one of four languages: English, German, French or Chinese. Foreign International applicants for the Science and Mathematics in the Languages Science, Technology and Society, and for the Psychology must select Japanese or one of three languages (English, German or French) other than their mother tongue. Other international students must take an examination in Japanese. Point Allocation: The score will be marked on a maximum of 100 points in the general selection, while being evaluated on a several-tiered scale in the special selection for international students. 7 Specialized Subjects al Studies Psychology Higher Development - Pedagogy - Select one question from each of five areas out of the following seven: cognitive psychology, learning psychology, social psychology, educational psychology, developmental psychology, clinical psychology, and child psychology. - Studies in Higher (including research fields on systems and policies, organizations and management, evaluation, pedagogy and methods of instruction, international exchange, etc.) Point Allocation: The score will be marked on a maximum of 300 points in the general selection and the special selection for students in employment, while being evaluated on a several-tiered scale in the special selection for international students. Implemented on the basis of application documents such as summary of the previous study and research Oral Exam proposal ( future plan for those who apply for the Advanced Teacher Training Course of the al Studies). Point Allocation: The score will be evaluated on a several-tiered scale. i) Applicants will not be allowed to alter or amend the application documents after submission. ii) Defective application documents may not be accepted. iii) Applicants for the Curriculum and Instruction Development of the Learning Science, Music Culture or Art of the Life-long Activities must fill out and report the examination subjects for elective questions in the specialized subjects on the Admission Application Form. iv) Questions in foreign languages examinations are the same for all the programs. v) In the general selection, applicants will be rejected if their score is less than 25 in the foreign language examination. vi) The programs comprising several majors will set a common question which is compulsory for applicants to all the subject within that program. vii) Applicants will be permitted to carry one paper dictionary only (English-Japanese, German-Japanese, French-Japanese, or Chinese-Japanese dictionaries), in foreign language examinations (no electronic dictionaries will be permitted). Applicants are prohibited from bringing any dictionary to the Japanese examination. viii) Applicants for the Music Culture of the Life-long Activities must follow the accompanying sheet, Implementation Guidance for Practical Examination, if they will take a practical examination in the specialized subject (elective). ix) Hiroshima University can provide necessary equipment for the practical examination in the Art of the Life-long Activities. x) Applicants for the Psychology must fill out and report the research field of their choice on the prescribed form. Announcement of Results AM 10:00 (expected) on February 22 (Tue), 2011 A list of the ID numbers of successful applicants will be posted on the message board at the main entrance of the Graduate School of. Notification of acceptance will also be sent to successful applicants by mail. Telephone inquiries will not be answered

Admission Procedure (1) Deadline for the Admission Procedure From March 17 (Thu) to March 24 (Thu), 2011 (with a deadline of 5 p.m.) The documents must arrive at Hiroshima University by the above deadline. (2) Payment Admission Fee: 282,000 yen Tuition Fee: 535,800 yen per year (267,900 yen per semester) i) Admission fees will not be returned for any reason. ii) The above fees are listed as current for April Should the amount be revised at the time of, or after, enrollment, students will be required to pay the revised fee. iii) Details of the amount and procedures of payments will be notified separately. (3) Admission Documents The admission documents to submit include the following: the document confirming entrance to the course; the pledge document, one photograph, the student information registration document; the photo ID card; the graduation certificate; and the academic transcript (only for those who take the exam before graduation); a letter of approval of your admission from the head of your organization (only for those who enroll while working at a public organization or private corporation). 7. Special Coursework Exception for Students in Employment If applicants with careers as incumbent teachers would like to apply for the special coursework exception stated in Article 14 of the Graduate School Establishment Criteria, they must specify it on their application form. Measures for coursework exceptions are as follows: In the first year of study, whilst dedicating themselves to studying in the graduate school away from their working place, students in employment are supposed to get most of the course credits required for their graduation in ordinary lesson hours. In the second year, after returning to work, they are required to take some special classes for the remaining credits, as well as for research guidance.
