Through generations our special technique has been explored and evolved and we are now the proud owners of a Subtrønic Model 645. This allows us to investigate your inner human landscape on the most comfortable journey and almost without any complications. However, sometimes our presence might manifest as disturbances*. If you experience symptoms that are not listed here please report back to Future Mind Tours, Büro Reisende. Dear visionary, We need positive visions of sustainable futures. Let us qoute Donella H. Meadows ( ), one of the leading pioneers of sustainable visions and co-author of Limits to growth in 1972: If we don t know where we want to go, it makes little difference that we made great progress. Yet vision is not only missing almost entirely from policy discussions; it is missing from our whole culture. We talk about our fears, frustrations, and doubts endlessly, but we talk only rarely and with embarrassment about our dreams. Donella wrote this in 1994 for the Third Biennial Meeting of the International Society for Ecological Economics, held in Costa Rica. She talked about the need to strengthen ourselves to endure the pain of the enormous gap between the world we know and the world we profoundly long for, and she made people try it themselves. House of Futures believes that we are able to promise each other more than survival during the next 100 years starting now. The world is changing, and people are changing too. Our values, belief systems, consciousness or simply the whole range of our capacities as humans are not the same today as they were back in 1912, and they will not be in 2112 either. No matter whether you see it as an evolvement of the rational human mind, a new enlightenment or a growing spiritual movement, it is happening. We are moving into a new era, and we need to go for shared and responsible visions to begin with. At this fourth and closing In100Y-seminar on people and mindsets we will deal with questions such as: What is sustainability utopias? What will happen when global values shift towards a more integral understanding of the whole? What will our relationship with nature be? How do we change our everyday consumption patterns? What are the historic models for great transformations? And how do we frame our visions for a sustainable future? All of us, we believe, are fuelled by the desire to change towards the better, but also pulled back by the agenda of today; survive and keep business as usual going. 3 about the project: in 100 years What The project In 100 years starting now is developed and will be facilitated by House of Futures during The project will explore and debate questions such as: - How can we sustain, develop and enrich human existence given the limited resources available on planet Earth? - what does it take to co-create sustainable societal growth/development in the long run? - and what are the preferred sustainable futures? Why In 100 years starting now has two overall purposes. The first is to develop and present alternative visions for sustainable societies to the general public and to decision makers in the public and private sector. The second purpose is an assessment of whether and how the VELUX FOUNDATION should support the establishment of a center for environment and sustainability in Denmark. A core group of high profile Danish experts will follow the four seminars and based on a parallel backcasting process give their recommendations to the foundation in April How Four In100Y-seminars will play a central role in re-working the agenda of sustainability and growth/development. The first seminar did focus on visions of sustainable growth, the second on policy and business models, the third on nature and technology and the fourth will focus on people and mindsets. The seminars are independent events yet also form part of a scenario process running the course of almost a year. We use Futures Studies methods in a 100 year scope combined with Performance Art to frame the necessary and preferred transformations and futures. The process involves 150+ interdisciplinary experts and thinkers from different fields, who rework and cocreate visions of sustainable futures. After the four seminars House of Futures will present two preferred futures for sustainable societies 2112 in a magazine publication, that all participants will receive for free. Enlightenment, Copernicus and Darwin It is necessary to rethink our relationship with Planet Earth, and in this process to develop new mindsets. It is possible, and we have done it before. But we are talking large-scale paradigm shifts comparable to the age of the Enlightenment or to pioneering breakthroughs like those of Copernicus or Darwin - breakthroughs that changed our understanding of ourselves and nature. Our sketches point to two possible transformative future mindsets that could drive sustainability forward. We call them the Power of Nature and Man-Made World. Scenarios as enabling tools Scenarios are not plans but tools to promote constructive ideas about the future. They can serve as framework for our common debates about the longterm future. And they can be applied by individual institutions and social agents as reference points for their own visions and plans. We realize that when we put our minds to it, we can develop technologies, organizations, political institutions and business models that allow us to prosper in ways that do not jeopardize the planet. Collectively, we are approaching a state of global stewardship in which we manage our planet rationally, like any sensible landowner would his property. And some rely on ancient wisdom and myths, emphasizing commonality and civility among humans. Mankind is maturing and tends to become an integrated organic part of the world s ecosystem. The Futures Studies field emerged during the mid-twentieth Century in the wake of the 2nd World War and the desire among decision makers to overview global developments as well as anticipate challenges ahead. Becker is senior associate at Natural Capitalism Solutions, author of The 100 Day Action Plan to Save the Planet and co-founder of The Future We Want. The Future We want is a global conversation and visualization in advance of and beyond Rio+20. It is the theme of Rio+20 and was announced this November together with Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the UN. Bill will share the idea behind this ambitious project and the need to collect and spread positive visions of a sustainable future on a gloibal scale using social media and other communication technologies. 09:35 karen blincoe (dk): sustainability utopias Karen Blincoe is Founder and Director of The International Centre for Creativity, Innovation and Sustainability (ICIS) and Chairman of Danish Designers. From she was Director of Schumacher College and headhunted to develop one of the world s leading hot spots for the advancement of sustainable societies. Karen is currently writing her Ph.d. thesis on sustainability utopias and will discuss whether sustainability is utopian in nature, and what we can learn from utopian societies that have been created with a sustainability bias. Karen is also a member of the Core Group of the project In100years. Our concept of nature is highly complex, allowing us to consider very different domains to be nature. Hans will talk about our modern understanding of nature highlighting six different conceptions and their relevance for issues of sustainability. Hans was trained in philosophy first at Aarhus University and then at Oxford University where he completed his D.Phil. in Since then he has been teaching philosophy in Aarhus alternating with periods as dean of the faculty of arts and as director of its Centre for Cultural Research hardin tibbs (uk): human values at a tipping point Hardin Tibbs is CEO of Synthesys Strategic Consulting Ltd, a business futures firm in London. Hardin will talk about the shift in global values that is underway and the need for a new perspective on what it means to be human. In 2011 he published a paper forecasting an imminent tipping point in cultural values that he believes could prove decisive in the transition to sustainability. He lectures on future-related topics at a number of business schools including the Judge Business School at Cambridge University, and helped to develop the executive education scenarios programme at the Saïd Business School, Oxford University. Before founding Synthesys, Hardin was a scenario planner with Global Business Network in California. This session is followed by a plenum discussion. 14:40 Coffee/tea, cake and fruit.
