1 seminar #1 / program 8-9 June 2011 Mind the long run, baby! On the future of sustainable growth

2 sustainability is a journey starting now... future mind tours, Büro Reisende Future Mind Tours travels within the human body and mind in order to dive into the conscious and subconscious. Through generations our special technique has been explored and evolved and we are now the proud owners of a Subtrønic Model 645. This allows us to investigate your inner human landscape on the most comfortable journey and almost without any complications. However, sometimes our presence might manifest as disturbances*. The most sublime outcome of this journey is a mind shift in the specific Reisende potentially resulting in a shift in paradigms in the external social landscape. *Subject-reports state following symptoms: Overwhelming inspirations, headaches, moments of spontaneous enlightenment, symbolically loaded dreams, hallucinatory shivers, stutters, butterflies in the stomach, incredible teamwork, memory loss, fever, diarrhea and inexplicable rashes. If you experience symptoms that are not listed here please report back to Future Mind Tours, Büro Reisende. Dear visionary, In 100 years you probably won t be living on Earth anymore, but you will have made your mark isn t just some far away future, it is a vision with immediate effect on how we choose to live our lives today. It is a literal interpretation of a time that those after us will live to see, a mere human lifetime. Neither sustainability, growth or 2112 is a destination. It s a journey. There s no business and politics as usual, and there never was. The future has always been different from the past, and it always will be. What we really need are new visions and dreams for a sustainable future. We are not the first human beings to design a new and better world, but we may be the last generation to have the choice, and yet there are no real experts. We will have to learn on the way to live the future while we create it. At this first Copenhagen Seminar we will focus on what sustainability and growth means. All the participants at the seminar have a choice, and possess the knowledge and wisdom to contribute to a preferred future for mankind. To help us navigate through tough times and mindshifts, to help us anticipate the future, we have engaged Future Mind Tours as your Büro Reisende. Just get on board and enjoy the journey and mind the long run, baby! All four Copenhagen Seminars will look ahead to the next 100 years in order to explore the success criteria for human existence and the measurement of progress and wellbeing. These are fundamental questions with decisive implications for governments, businesses, organisations and individuals. Human development as propelled by our economic, technological and political system is dynamic and all parties must be involved in co-creating our common future. Time has come to establish a new platform where this is possible, and we have to go beyond short term egocentric interests. In 100 years starting now is such a platform. Yours sincerely, House of Futures

3 about the project: in 100 years What The project In 100 years starting now is developed and will be facilitated by House of Futures during and is supported by the VELUX FOUNDATION. The project will explore and debate questions such as: - how can we sustain, develop and enrich human existence given the limited resources available on planet Earth? - what does it take to co-create sustainable societal growth/development in the long run? - and what are the possible, plausible and preferred futures? Why In 100 years starting now has two overall purposes. The first is to develop and present alternative visions for sustainable societies to the general public and to public and private decision makers. The second purpose is an assessment of whether and how the VELUX FOUNDATION should support the establishment of a center for environment and sustainability in Denmark. How Four Copenhagen Seminars will play a central role in re-working the agenda of sustainability and growth/development. The first seminar will focus on sustainable growth, the second on policy and business models, the third on nature and technolgy and the fourth on people and mindsets. The seminars are independent events yet also form part of a scenario process running the course of almost a year. We use futures studies methods in a 100 year scope to frame the necessary and preferred transformations. The process will involve 200+ inter-disciplinary experts and thinkers, who will rework and co-create visions of sustainable futures. After the four seminars House of Futures will present two preferred futures for sustainable societies Our vision it that this project will make a unique Scandinavian contribution to the debate on how we can meet the needs of the present without compromising future generations. A core group of high profile Danish experts will follow the four seminars and based on a parallel back casting process give their recommendations to the VELUX FOUNDATION in spring read more about in 100 years starting now at scenario process Seminar 1 Seminar 2 Seminar 3 Seminar 4 members of the core group are: Steen Hildebrandt, Ph.D, Professor, Institute of Leadership, Aarhus University. The priming soil is dressed in the colour red as the cosmic pulse, the heart of the planet. Dorthe will connect us to the spirit of water, the primordial waters which nourish Mother Earth, when we arrive at Borups Højskole. Dorthe Steenberg is a Paqo, a master in the ancient Andean spiritual tradition, carrying the feminine wisdom of perception. She is playing seriously with the universal energies, practising and teaching AYNI, the give and take principle of sacred Reciprocity. 5 steen svendsen & gitte larsen, futurists, house of futures (DK): introductions Gitte Larsen and Steen Svendsen share the project management of In100Y. They will be your special agents and guide you through this seminar. Steen Svendsen is a futurist and policy developer. He holds a MA in Political Science and has worked at CIFS, Monday Morning and Strategy Unit (UK). Gitte Larsen is a futurist, editior and author. She is co-author of three books ( ) and former Editor in Chief of the award winning magazine FO/futureorientation published by CIFS ( ). Gitte also holds a MA in Political Science. søren steen olsen, futurist, house of futures (DK): in100years / thinking in centuries A time frame of 100 years is longer than the usual decision-making agenda whether in politics, business or our private lives. But our short term decisions often have a bearing on the longer term, and we need to be better at recognizing this. Sustainability and growth are long-term issues. They stretch ahead in time, but they also stretch back in time as human activities have repeatedly put pressure on natural resources, necessitating small-scale adaptation, large-scale change or even whole-sale transformation of societies and economies. Some have succeeded, others have not and serve as stark reminders. Our next 100 years will be determined by how we go about the next social transformations in order to sustain and develop human well-being subject to natural resources under strain. And while problems, risks and capacities are very different and unevenly distributed, the challenge, this time, is global in scope. At the same time there are many signs, large and small, that such transformations are indeed in the offing. Søren Steen Olsen is a futurist and an analytical economist, House of Futures. VIDEO-interview: JOHN FULLERTON, FOUNDER, CAPITAL INSTITUTE (us): 3 rd millennium economy John Fullerton was a senior bank executive with JPMorgan until 2001, who was already then asking probing questions about the financial system and the direction it was headed. After leaving, he began investigating alternative economic ideas and became an active impact investor, aligning his capital with his values in the period leading up to the financial crisis of In late 2009, sensing the opportunity and need to fundamentally rethink finance, John founded Capital Institute. He is now engaged in some of the most interesting alternative economic model projects in the US and internationally. Hear his personal story and visions for a new and sustaining economics built on an understanding of natural systems science, the 3rd Millennium Economy. John Fullerton is President and founder of Capital Institute, which until the beginning of 2011 was a self-financing NGO. John is now reaching out to a small, select group of financial partners to help expand the reach of Capital Institute. minik rosing, professor, Natural History Museum of Denmark (DK): The power of thought One hundred years may seem a long time frame for many of us, but for geologist Minik Rosing it is only a split second. Planet Earth has existed for more than 4 billion years, and will also exist billion of years ahead. The question is will the human race, too? According to Minik the challenging issue, if we want to create a sustainable future, is our understanding of the dynamics of Earth and the relationship between humans and nature. Humans are the dominant animal on the planet, and our behaviour plays a central role for the Earth s capability to function. What differentiate us from animals is our love for fire, and humans are the only species that are able to use more energy than our own metabolism produces. That is why it s so important to recognise that our ethical values, dreams, wishes and goals control most, by far, of our consumption of energy and other resources. Minik will talk about how science that do not relate to the dreams and needs of human beings, and art that do not relate to what we know, easily become trivial and self-sufficient. If the natural sciences and the humanities co-work we might be able to change our energy consumption and live in synergy with planet Earth. Will we? Minik Thorleif Rosing is Professor at the Natural History Museum of Denmark and University of Copenhagen. He is a well-known Danish Geologist and has done research about the earliest signs of life on Earth. Minik was also appointed one of the leaders of the Galathea 3 expedition. In 2008 he received the Danish Award of Geology, and he holds numerous lectures and talks in Denmark and abroad. peder andersen, professor, university of copenhagen (DK): the directions for economics Sustainability and economics theory, ecological economics, and economics of happiness. A variety of alternative approaches to thinking about economics have been proposed in the broad debate on sustainability in recent decades. In particular mainstream economics has come under attack for being single-mindedly growth-oriented as opposed to environmental sustainability and other objectives, like life-satisfaction and happiness. At the same time established mainstream economists in institutions like OECD, UN, the World Bank, EU, and governments in several G-7 countries are deeply involved in redefining core concepts, including and most notably GDP. There are many positions and much dynamism in the field. So, what are the main positions, where is economic thinking on sustainability headed, and how is it affecting policy in practice? Peder Andersen is PhD, Professor and Head of the Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Group, Institute of Food and Resource Economics, University of Copenhagen. Research interests: Environmental and resource economics, incentives and regulation, and sustainability, ecosystem services and wealth. Peder is a member of the Core Group of the project In 100 years.

6 daniel o neill, european director casse (uk): steady-state economy Economic growth remains the primary policy goal of most national governments. This is a problem because endless economic growth is not possible on a finite planet. Nor, for that matter, is it improving the well-being of people in developed nations. A different economic model is needed for the next 100 years. We must make the transition to a steady state economy an economy where population and per capita consumption remain roughly constant over time, and energy and material flows are kept within ecological limits. Daniel O Neill will describe some of the basic characteristics of a steady state economy, and discuss a number of policy reforms that would be needed to achieve such an economy. These include policies to limit resource use and waste production, stabilise population, limit inequality, reform the monetary system, secure full employment, and change the way we measure progress. Daniel O Neill is the European Director at the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE), and a Ph.D. candidate in ecological economics at the University of Leeds. His research interests include steady state economics, limits to growth, environmental indicators, and alternative ways of measuring human progress. Dan has worked in both the public and private sectors in areas such as regional planning and energy management. He is also co-author of Enough is Enough: Ideas for a Sustainable Economy in a World of Finite Resources, and frequently presents topics related to steady state economics at scientific conferences and in the media. Jan rotmans, professor, erasmus university rotterdam (ne): new perspectives on sustainability Sustainability transitions are radical transformations towards a sustainable society as a response to a number of persistent problems confronting contemporary modern societies. The most striking example of such a persistent problem is the current financial and climate crisis, which will enable sustainable transitions. In this process we are at a turning point. On the verge of a new era, characterized by a battle of the old paradigm against the new one, with a crucial role for sustainable innovation. Jan believes that this huge transformation can actually be brought about also by a small number of people. He will share his knowledge and ideas about how we can master sustainable transitions, and influence and steer them, and what kind of research agenda that is called for in this field. Jan Rotmans is the Scientific Director of Dutch Research Institute For Transitions (DRIFT) and professor of sustainability transitions at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is a socially engaged scientist and both personally and professionally involved in many transitions projects, networks and boards. He has written more than 200 publications in this field and given numerous keynote lectures all over the world. Jan is also co-author of Transitions to Sustainable Development. New Directions in the Study of Long Term transformative change (Routledge, 2010), which offers the state-of-the-art in research on transitions. steen hildebrandt, professor, aarhus university (DK): sustainable leadership One cannot practice sustainable, authentic, and meaningful leadership unless it is grounded in a profound anchorage in the self. The sustainable, the authentic, and the meaningful emerge from an inner clarity, an awareness of what is important important to me, important in my life, and sufficiently important for me to assume a shared responsibility for a process. Sustainable leadership is generated by our ability to read feelings as sounding boards for dreams, intentions, desires, decisions, and actions (from the introduction of Sustainable Leadership, 2011). Steen Hildebrandt will describe the need for sustainable leadership as a central force shaping the ongoing paradigm shift towards a sustainable future for individuals, corporations and societies. The urgent task is to improve our ability to combine the individual internal orientation with a global perspective. We all know how money talks, but we have to listen to the voices of life in order to foster and formulate a new mindset and live the future, while we create it. Steen Hildebrandt is Professor of organization and management, Department and Management, Aarhus Univesity and Chairman and partner in Hildebrandt and Brandi A/S. He is author of a number of books, latest Sustainable leadership, Gyldendal Business (2011). Steen gives more than 150 lectures and talks every year and are teaching present and future board members in Danish companies. Steen is a member of the Core Group of the project In 100 years jennifer jarratt, futurist, director leading futurists (us): Thinking in preferred futures Jennifer Jarratt will share why she thinks we all should think about the future and why this seminar is an important opportunity to do that. Most people think about the future in a sort of implicit way. They have many ideas and assumptions about how things are going to turn out. Studies have shown that when someone delivers bad news about the future, they must be very careful to present opportunities even in an unpleasant situation and that s a concept that we all ought to think about in professional terms. How do we do that? It takes many of us a lot of thinking to get beyond the whole world problematique so that we can feel reasonably positive about the future again. If we don t have a positive image of the future, we won t have a future not a preferred one at least. Jennifer Jarratt will talk about futures thinking and broad trends/forces that are already shaping the world of 2050 and try to connect those trends with some implications for sustainability and growth in general. Jennifer Jarratt is Director at Leading Futurists and has been working since 1984 on wide-ranging futures activities. She is a recognized leading thinker and author among futurists on human resources and social/demographic change and leads seminars and courses on thinking like a futurist. Jennifer is among many doings past board chair and a founding member of the Association of Professional Futurists and visiting instructor in Studies of the Future, University of Houston- Clear Lake. In her earlier career as a journalist in the US and Britain, Jennifer shared in a Pulitzer Prize.
