INTRODUCING CBS CENTRE FOR CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
CBS CENTRE FOR CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY CBS Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (cbscsr) was established in Professor Mette Morsing served as the Founding Director of the Centre for 10 years. In 2012, Associate Professor Esben Rahbek Pedersen took over the responsibility as the Director of cbscsr. The Centre can this year celebrate its 10 years anniversary. The Centre was created to provide a forum focusing on the new conditions for corporate activity, stemming from an increased focus on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the role of business in society. Today, cbscsr is a common ground for colleagues at CBS, with different academic associations, but all with a common interest in the study of CSR, sustainability, and business ethics and how these concepts influence corporations and society today. MISSION SOME SIGNIFICANT FACTS ABOUT THE CENTRE: cbscsr achieved the status of one of Europe s top class research environments on issues of CSR. cbscsr contributes to the development of the CSR agenda through active knowledge sharing and by working in partnerships with other universities, enterprises and organisations. cbscsr has been the driving force behind several initiatives such as: The UN Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) (2008), the CBS Sustainability Platform (2011), the student organisation WELL, today called 360 degrees and the Scandinavian Centre for Corporate Sustainability, which will be launched in cbscsr is internationally one of the largest Centers in terms of researchers. The Centre has approximately 25 researchers, 10 research assistants and 3 adjunct professors; Peter Pruzan, Ed Freeman, and Mads Øvlisen. cbscsr aims to maintain its position as an internationally recognised academic knowledge hub for CSR and to continue to produce world-class research, teaching, and outreach activities that are of relevance for both academia and practitioners. CREATING THE KNOWLEDGE OF TOMORROW
RESEARCH cbscsr is a multi-disciplinary Centre that embraces and approaches the field of CSR from different theoretical disciplines including philosophy, sociology, business economics, strategy, management, communication studies and organisation theory. Research at cbscsr is centered around modern organisations and their relations to society, both how organisations shape society and how society is part of shaping business practices. Recognising the broad and diverse character of the CSR phenomenon, cbscsr research encompasses a wide range of research areas. KEY RESEARCH AREAS AT THE CENTRE: Communication: cbscsr critically reflects the interactions between business and its stakeholders from a communication perspective. The communication lens adds a fruitful approach towards CSR in order to examine questions of accountability, public discourse, and stakeholder engagement. Performance and Leadership: It is increasingly assumed that CSR can be a driver of competiveness and innovation. cbscsr uncovers the micro- and macro-forces that facilitate and hinder the development of CSR innovation, sustainable business models, shared value etc. Social Entrepreneurship: The study of disequilibria in market and non-market environments and their creation through the identification of opportunities to create public goods in social enterprises. Standardisation and Political CSR: In the last decade, there has been a mushrooming of CSR standards reporting systems, labeling schemes, global principles, industry codes of conduct. cbscsr looks at the production, dissemination, and adoption of these standards and their embeddedness in multi-stakeholder governance processes. Consumer Behaviour: The demand-side of CSR plays a decisive role for the future mainstreaming of CSR. cbscsr looks at the interactions between companies and consumers, e.g. when and how companies can persuade consumers to walk the talk when it comes to buying green/ethical products and services. RESEARCH EXCELLENCE cbscsr has played a major role in CBS achieving 2nd place in sustainability research publications in Europe, according to Beyond Grey Pinstripes Ranking 2011 (Aspen) cbscsr researchers have been internationally recognised with the Emerald outstanding paper award, Emerald social impact award, the CBS Communication Award, the Research Award in Finance and Sustainable Development for Best Published Academic Paper and more.
RESEARCH PROJECTS cbscsr attracts a substantial amount of external funding from among others, EU FP6, EU FP7, the Social Science Research Council (FSE) and the Strategic Research Council. Currently, the Centre has 20 projects funded by external funds, both nationally and internationally. These projects are developed in cooperation with other research institutions like DTU and University of Copenhagen. Recent examples include: MISTRA Future Fashion, funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research, is a large, international and cross-disciplinary research initiative aiming to promote sustainable development in the fashion industry. cbscsr is responsible for two sub-projects: 1) the development of new market and business models, and 2) sustainable consumption and consumer behavior. Responsible Business in the Blogosphere (RBB), funded by the Danish strategic research council, has been running for the past four years. The goal of the project is to investigate how companies reputations as a responsible business are constructed online in virtual social networks. CORPUS, an EU funded project, focuses on the policy issue of sustainable consumption which is of great importance in the current and future strategic development of the EU. The project seeks to enhance connectivity between research and policy-making in sustainable consumption. RESPONSE, an EU funded project, aims at understanding how multinational companies see their responsibility towards society and how this is aligned (or not) with the expectations of their stakeholders.
TEACHING cbscsr is involved in numerous teaching programs and activities at CBS. cbscsr faculty teaches and supervises on all educational levels at CBS from undergraduate and graduate to MBA and Ph.D level. Courses taught by the Centre faculty focuses on among others, Strategic CSR, Sustainability, Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship, CSR in Supply Chains and Business Ethics. cbscsr also offers a minor in Social Entrepreneurship and Not-For-Profit Management (S-ENT). MBA CORE COURSE ON SUSTAINABILITY & CSR The course Business Practices from a Corporate Sustainability Perspective was developed by Professor Kai Hockerts and Assistant Professor Robert Strand and as of the academic year is now implemented within the core curriculum of the CBS MBA program. CBS-SIMI EXECUTIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY & SOCIAL INNOVATION The executive education program Corporate Sustainability & Social Innovation was developed and conducted in November 2012 by CBS Professors Kai Hockerts, Mette Morsing, and Robert Strand in collaboration with Jo Mackness, Executive Director of the Center for Responsible Business at the University of California-Berkeley Haas School of Business.
OUTREACH ACTIVITIES Central to cbscsr s mission is engagement with a large network of partners from academic institutions, the public sector, civil organisations and private businesses. Research is developed in close collaboration with cbscsr s partners and the relationship between theory and practice is central to all the Centre s activities. The Knowledge Group, established in 2010, is one example of a collaborative network. The Knowledge Group is run by Associate Professor Steen Vallentin and consists of CSR professionals from a wide range of large Danish companies including A.P. Møller Mærsk, Arla Foods, Novo Nordisk, Carlsberg Group, ATP, IKEA, Tryg, FDB and Novozymes. The purpose of the group is to be a forum for knowledge sharing among practitioners and academia within the field of CSR. Through presentations and discussions, challenges and opportunities of CSR are debated with an eye to both practical and theoretical concerns. In addition, cbscsr has since its inception in 2002 been hosting several international conferences as well as high-profile visiting professors such as; Andrew Crane, Professor of Business Ethics from Schulich School of Business, York University, Canada, Joep Cornelissen, Professor at VU University Amsterdam and Jean-Pascal Gond, Professor at Cass Business School City University, UK. SOME OF THE MOST ATTENDED INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES HOSTED BY cbscsr As one of five business schools co-founding The Academy of Business in Society (EABIS), cbscsr hosted EABIS 2nd International Colloquium in 2003, with Professor Michael Porter from Harvard Business School as keynote speaker. In 2011, cbscsr hosted the first Social Media for Social Purposes conference, with Professor Andrew Crane as one of the keynote speakers. Partnership 2012 NGO and Partnership Conference with Kofi A. Annan, the 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations attending. CREATING THE KNOWLEDGE OF TOMORROW
cbscsr COLLABORATING PARTNERS Over the past 10 years cbscsr has collaborated with a large number of public and private organisations on research, teaching and outreach activities. PEOPLE ABOUT cbscsr Congratulations cbscsr on what has been achieved in these first 10 years. Your strong international team of researchers, be they economists, social scientists, doctorate students, poets or bookkeepers has - working closely with and challenging companies earned you international recognition as an innovator of CSR theory and practice. You have been a great source of inspiration. Mads Øvlisen, Adjunct professor at cbscsr and former President, CEO at Novo Nordisk. In Group Sustainability in Maersk, we believe we have had a good and productive relationship with cbscsr; applying academic thinking and contextualization to our everyday experiences and endeavors has been very useful, e.g. in the Knowledge sharing group including CBS researchers and large companies. Not least, the students always ask relevant and challenging questions during presentations which is great inspiration to us. Annette Stube, Director of Group Sustainability in A.P. Møller Mærsk. The Centre s international recognition is well-deserved and earned through practicing what you teach and preach: inviting partners to engage in an open dialogue to learn with stakeholders and co-create solutions, encouraging sustainable practices in day-to-day operations, driving a sustainability mind-set into mainstream business conversations, and having the courage to set new agendas that inspire people to think and act differently. For a 10-year-old, your achievements are impressive and we are proud to have sown the seeds. Susanne Stormer, Vice President, Corporate Sustainability, Novo Nordisk.
