8 STATEMENT of FAITH 8 My statement of faith, as do my philosophy of leadership and my philosophy of learning, stems from the same common element of the power of individual potential and how that potential is a valuable component in any collaborative endeavor whether administrative or instructional. My Methodist upbringing instilled in me the belief that everyone is deserving of God s love and everyone has unique, God-given talents with which they can share that love through service. Service, for me, has been in the field of education. I believe it is imperative as a teacher to help a student discover their innate talents and guide them in applying those talents so they can develop the strengths they need to be productive members of a loving, supportive society. Teachers must model the love of God through acceptance, understanding, and the belief that every individual has value and potential, and do so in a manner that does not violate State and federal mandates for public education. These are concepts I have had to model in all my classrooms except those at Sterling College. It was there that I was able to emphasize, discuss, and expand upon these beliefs in a forthright manner in keeping with the Christian faith of that institution. My goal was to instill in my students that as teachers, it was going to be their responsibility to help each of their students find their own personal value, to consider it a challenge to understand, encourage, and love all those with whom they worked, and to share God s love through their service as teachers. My personal belief in the value of God-given, personal talents and strengths was reinforced when I was introduced to the Gallup Strengths Finder during a faculty professional development event at Sterling College. I was a strong proponent for incorporating this assessment inventory into our Servant Leadership curriculum as it provided a method to help students identify the innate, God-given talents and strengths that were uniquely theirs and guided them on how to better utilize those strengths through service.
