CAREER CHOICES AT CITC Your Community Training Partner Certified Member of the CompTIA training alliance (773) Get Trained - Get Certified - Get A Job!!! Community Information Technology Center (CITC) 7816 South Ashland Avenue Chicago, IL info@citcchicago.org 1
harity In the Community (CITC) was established in 2002 as a 501 (c) 3 recognized nonprofit organization by founders Janette and Henry Razor. Located on Chicago's south side, CITC is focused on serving the under-served and disadvantaged residents of Chicago's inner city communities. Our mission is to promote community economic growth and development to the aforementioned communities and their residents by providing technology training and education along with professional development. Our instructors and course developers are experienced IT professionals who hold numerous certifications from such prestigious technical organizations as Cisco and CompTIA. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, eight out of the ten fastest growing occupations are computer related. While one might think of the typical IT worker as employed by a major software company or systems developer, the reality is that nine out of ten IT workers are found in banks, insurance companies, manufacturing plants or other non-it businesses. With IT careers growing exponentially, obtaining the necessary IT skills today leads to employment in areas that lift communities, establishes families, and provides future financial security. It is more important than ever for educators to prepare students for careers in IT. CITC offers individuals the opportunity to work with a caring mentor-focused staff to improve their ability to develop a positive attitude towards their future. The long-term goal of CITC is to promote both economic growth and empowerment through information technology services, training/education, and professional development. The programs provided by CITC all complement the main mission of the organization, to promote community economic growth and development in Chicago's inner city communities. The standards of quality of our programs are based on recognized IT industry standards and practices. CITC offers training programs in: IT Network/Computer Technician Training (CompTIA A+) Data Networking (Cisco CCNA) Computer Business Application (Microsoft) Broadband Support Professional (Job Market Specializations) Specialized Network Security and Wireless Networking CITC Jr. Engineer program for middle school aged children Customized courses for businesses and corporate IT departments. As you scan through the pages of this catalogue, you will become familiar with the focused technical training that we offer. Our core curriculum is designed specifically to meet the needs of inner city residents and provide community access to the technology training that leads to employment in highly paid IT careers. The more you learn about CITC and our programs, the easier it is to understand why we say: Get Trained Get Certified Get a Job! 2
A+ Training at CITC Course Code CITCA+ Course Length 168 hours Course Cost Contact CITC for Pricing Undoubtedly the most popular entry-level certification in the world, A+ is a widely accepted certification that validates professional level knowledge of hardware and software technologies. This is an excellent certification for anyone looking to enter into the world of information technology. A+ certification validates the latest skills needed by today's computer and network support professionals. It is an international, vendor-neutral certification recognized by major hardware and software vendors, distributors and resellers. A+ certification confirms a technician's ability to perform tasks such as IT hardware and software installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventive maintenance and basic networking. A+ certification ensures the right people have the right skills. While many of the essential skills are universal, there are additional skills required to support the needs of businesses. By offering certification options for specific job scenarios, A+ gives individuals the ability to grow their careers in a certain area, and employers the flexibility to choose the exam combination that best fits their needs. As the most widely recognized certification credential in the IT industry, A+ has become the fundamental requirement for individuals entering into the IT industry. When it comes to entry level certifications, A+ certification is definitely worth your time and money! Many computer manufacturers will void the warranty on a computer if the technician that opens the case is not A+ certified. Many advanced and more job specific certifications require the A+ certification as a prerequisite. In 2007, one technology writer performed a survey and the following is his statement describing his finding. After recently looking over the major online classified websites, I noticed over 60% of the entry level posting I reviewed had the A+ certification as either a required or recommended skill. With the 2006 update to this certification, A+ now validates basic Data Networking and Network Security knowledge, skills, and expertise. This update made the A+ certification an even more valuable requirement for IT professionals. 3
By getting an A+ certification, you are proving to prospective employers that you have a solid working foundation of computer knowledge, IT Networking, Network Security, professionalism, and safety. With this as your starting point, anything you need to learn on the job will have a basis in these fundamentals. As a community nonprofit, our mission is to transfer the most relevant and applicable knowledge to students who receive training in our A+ program. Our students began calling this program (Employment+) because of the extra industry specific training that s provided specifically to ready the student for employment. Extra training includes, Windows Networking and Server configuration, Active Directory User Management, SOHO network installation and configuration with Wireless Access, and more. 9 Customized and Accelerated Courses at CITC Because our Instructors are highly sought after industry experts, CITC offers customized training directly to businesses and corporations. In many instances, these courses are prepared specifically to meet the need of the IT professional who needs to acquire, upgrade, and/or update their skills while earning any of the valuable industry certifications for they receive training for at CITC. When requested, a CITC professional will analyze your training request, perform both a needs and task analysis, then design, develop, and deliver the customized content at your workplace, conference facility, or at the CITC training center. CITC regularly provides customized training in the following areas: Network Security Do you know what Social Engineering is? Has your company, department, or division received security awareness training on the methods used to compromise the confidential information that you depend on for success in business? Are you doing everything possible to keep confidential information confidential? If you answered no, maybe, I think so, or I don t know to any of the above questions, your network could be placing your entire business at risk! As one of the most requested customized classes at CITC, the Network Security class focuses on educating businesses and corporations on the ways to protect valuable information and mitigate security risks. It is true that network security is a critical issue. That s not going to change any time soon. In fact, its importance is only going to grow. One of the quickest ways to lose shareholder value, client confidence, and sales is to suffer a data breach. The importance of ensuring that staff are properly educated as to systems security, network infrastructure, access control, auditing, and organizational security principles is simply too important to take for granted. At CITC, our Network security training helps corporations close security holes and mitigate security risks. The focus is totally on securing the information that makes you business successful. 9
Wireless Networking In today s era of mobility, staying connected even when you are unplugged is essential to succeeding in the business and corporate environment. Wireless LANs frequently augment rather than replace wired LAN networks-often providing the final few meters of connectivity between a backbone network and the mobile user. The following list describes a few of the many applications made possible through the power and flexibility of wireless LANs: o Doctors and nurses in hospitals are more productive because hand-held or notebook computers with wireless LAN capability deliver patient information instantly. o Training sites at corporations and students at universities use wireless connectivity to facilitate access to information, information exchanges, and learning. o Network managers installing networked computers in older buildings find that wireless LANs are a cost-effective network infrastructure solution. o Retail store owners use wireless networks to simply frequent network reconfiguration. o Trade show and branch office workers minimize setup requirements by installing preconfigured wireless LANs needing no local MIS support. o Warehouse workers use wireless LANs to exchange information with central databases and increase their productivity. o Senior executives in conference rooms make quicker decisions because they have real-time information at their fingertips. At CITC, our wireless networking training helps corporations stay connected even when they are unplugged. The focus is totally on seamless network continuity when wireless nodes are integrated into wired networks, thereby creating hybrid networks. 10
