4 WCSM Level 2 Certificate in Spectacle Manufacturing Operations (QCF) Qualification Objective This qualification has been developed for people working in the manufacture of spectacles. It has three units. Throughout this document, the term learner is used to refer to the person seeking to gain the qualification. Entry requirements There are no specific entry requirements. Customer Service Statement See relevant sections of the Customer Service Statement at: for details of: Equal opportunities policy Reasonable adjustments Special considerations Complaints and appeals procedures. Progression There are opportunities for the learner to progress to other WCSM Level 2 and 3 qualifications and these lead on to the WCSM Level 4 Diploma for Optical Technicians or ABDO Level 6 Diploma in Ophthalmic Dispensing. Training It is recommended that learners attend the training sessions provided by the WCSM Education Trust to support them in achieving this qualification. Details of training workshops, materials, other available support and associated fees can be found at: Other training providers may offer support for this qualification. 5 Assessment The learner will be assessed through written or e-assessment examinations. The format of the written and e-assessment examinations will be identical. The pass mark for each unit is set at 50%. If a candidate fails any unit, the unit can be retaken on its own, at specified times within three years. Grading Successful learners will be awarded a Pass for each unit taken. A pass in all units is necessary to achieve the qualification. There are no grades. Should all units not be achieved learners will be awarded credit certificates for the units passed Personal Learner Record and Unique Learner Number The Personal Learner Record (PLR) logs achievement of units and qualifications provided that the learner has received a Unique Learner Number (ULN). The ULN enables learners to have access to their PLR and for them to give access to training providers and/or employers to enable them to view their records as evidence of achievement. When a learner registers for a qualification with WCSM they will be asked to provide their ULN. Where learners do not possess a ULN we can assist them in obtaining one if they wish their subsequent achievements to be entered on to the PLR. Understand the part played by the industrial, educational and professional bodies within optics. 2.1 State the functions of the representative bodies within optics. 3. Understand the progression opportunities in the optical industry 3.1 Describe the types of training and qualifications available within manufacturing optics. 3.2 Outline the roles of personnel in manufacturing optics 4. Understand employees statutory rights and responsibilities. 4.1 Explain the importance of an employment contract 4.2 Explain the responsibilities of employees Additional Information about the unit Unit Aim(s) To provide a foundation of knowledge of the optical industry and how it operates including the role of the employee. 4
7 Unit 2 RITS No M/505/1139 Title Preparing to make ophthalmic appliances Level 2 Credit 2 Learning Outcomes The learner will: 1. Understand optical orders for spectacles. Assessment Criteria The learner can: 1.1 Describe the content of prescription order forms for spectacles 1.2 Outline the different types of spectacle orders 1.3 Transpose ophthalmic prescriptions Explain how the process of ordering relates to the overall manufacturing process. 2. Know how to prepare for the processing of orders for spectacles. 2.1 List the requirements to be able to manufacture spectacles. 2.2 List the types of materials used in the manufacture of spectacles. 3. Understand the importance of maintaining quality throughout the process of receiving orders and then manufacturing 3.1 Describe a process for dealing with problems or errors in received orders. 3.2 Describe a process for dealing with problems or errors during and after manufacture Additional Information about the unit Unit Aim(s) To understand how to receive and process orders and the selection of the materials required prior to manufacturing spectacles 5

Assessment Criteria The learner can: 1.1 Describe the final quality checks required before dispatch to the customer 1.2 Describe the methods of dispatching finished orders. 1.3 Describe the types of documentation for dispatching orders. 1.4 Discuss the relative costs of different shipping methods. 2. Understand the packing requirements for spectacles 2.1 Describe typical procedures for packaging. 2.2 Explain why particular methods of packaging are used. 3. Understand the labelling requirements for spectacles 3.1 Explain the labelling requirements of the Medical Devices Directive. 3.2 Explain the importance of correct labelling. Additional Information about the unit Unit Aim(s) To understand the process of dispatching orders for finished spectacles, including checking that the goods are fit for dispatch, preparing, packing, labelling and shipping the product to the customer. 7

Understand the Health and Safety regulations in an optical production workplace. Assessment Criteria The learner can: 1.1 Describe the typical location of the essential health and safety regulations in the workplace 1.2 Outline the objectives of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1.3 Outline the requirements of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1.4 Describe their company rules relating to health and safety. 1.5 State the lines of communication regarding health and safety issues. 2. Understand the importance of environmental protection 2.1 Identify typical environmental hazards in an optical production unit 2.2 Describe the environmental issues around waste disposal 2.3 Identify procedures for waste disposal 2.4 Explain the disposal procedures for packaging 3. Respond appropriately to accidents and incidents in the workplace 3.1 Explain employees responsibilities regarding health and safety at work. 3.2 Explain how to respond to emergency situations at work. 3.3 Describe the use of emergency response equipment. 3.4 Explain the use of alarm systems.
