Victoria Centre Vincent Square London SW1P 2PD The Victoria Centre is in Westminster, a short walk from both Victoria and St James s Park underground stations. It offers courses in the award winning School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality, which celebrated its 100 year anniversary in It provides courses in Business, ICT and Enterprise as well as Higher Education and Foundation Degree courses that learners can progress to. It is also the home to the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy. With 14 kitchens, demonstration theatres, multimedia and ICT suites and an extensive Learning Resource Centre, the Victoria Centre provides excellent facilities for learners. The College s student-run restaurant, The Vincent Rooms is also located at the Victoria Centre as well as the Professional Development Centre. It offers a wide range of academic and vocational courses for year olds, including VICTORIA A-Levels and BTECs. It also provides courses for adult learners including Foundation Learning for students with ST. JAMES S PARK learning difficulties. Built in 2009, the King s Cross Centre has first-class learning facilities, including: Open-learning spaces with e-learning facilities Fully accessible Gym Learning Centre PIMLICO ST. Art, 3D, photography and fashion studios Science and pharmacy PIMLICO laboratories State-of-the-art IT suites Music studios featuring Mac, control, performance and live rooms KING S CROSS KING S CROSS BUCKINGHAM GATE BUCKINGHAM GATE Soho Centre Peter Street London W1F 0HS 2 The Soho Centre is located in the heart of London s Soho and is a short walk from Oxford Circus, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and Tottenham Court Road underground stations. This is the main College centre for Access to Higher Education courses. It offers a wide range of English Language classes, including general and vocational ESOL courses, EFL and IELTS courses. The Soho Centre is also the base for the College Creative Learning Lab with media training facilities for hire ST. JAMES S PARK KING S CROSS ST. PANCRAS KING S CROSS ST. PANCRAS This Centre is close to Great Portland Street, Euston Square, Regent s Park and Warren Street underground stations. It offers ESOL/English courses and community based courses. It is also home to the New Directions Employability Centre, which provides employment training to help adults develop their skills and find employment. Due to building works taking place in the Victoria Centre this academic year there is a possibility that your course may be held in a different location to the one shown in this guide. 6 Westminster Kingsway College offers a range of Access and Higher Education courses, ideal for adults who want to develop their skills and get ahead in their chosen industry. Access to Higher Education Diplomas Westminster Kingsway College offers Access to Higher Education Diplomas for students who want to progress onto University. The College is one of the largest providers of Access courses in London. They are designed to prepare you for Higher Education study by building your experiences gained during previous employment, travel or caring for a family. FIND OUT MORE ON PAGE 10 Pre-University Foundation for Engineering Degrees The Pre-University course is suitable for adults who need to update their technical knowledge or for those with a scientific background who need to work on their mathematical and laboratory skills before applying for the Degree course in Engineering or Actuarial Science at City University London. FIND OUT MORE ON PAGE 22 Foundation Degrees and Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degrees Westminster Kingsway College offers Foundation Degrees and Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree courses in vocational subjects, with many available on either a Full Time or part-time basis. These Higher Education courses are closely linked to employers requirements and prepare you for careers in Accounting, Business Management, Facilities Management, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management and Tourism Management. Adult Progression to Further Study The College offers preparation courses at Level 2 for students who are not quite ready to enrol on an Access to HE Diploma or Higher Education course. In addition to a Level 2 Certificate in Progression, where you will learn study and research skills, you will also study for a qualification in Maths and English at GCSE or Functional Skills level. Entry to the preparation course is dependent on the result of diagnostic testing within the first four weeks of the course. The entry requirements for this course are GCSEs in Maths and English (at grade D or above) or an equivalent qualification. You will need to bring your qualification certificates to your interview. Level 1 and 2 Vocational Courses Vocational courses are suitable if you want to study a more subject specific course and are not quite ready for the Preparation for Access course. This is a fantastic opportunity to build your confidence and get to know more about the area in which you hope to build your career. We currently offer vocational courses in: Science and Engineering; Health and Social Care; Health Science and Social Care. If you decide to take this option you will complete qualifications in Functional Skills (Maths and English). There are no entry requirements for this course. We will decide on your suitability for the course depending on your initial diagnostic testing which will be completed at your interview. 7 Access to HE Diplomas More information Access to Higher Education Diploma The Access to HE Diploma is a one year course offering an alternative pathway for adults who wish to progress onto Higher Education/University. You will develop the subject knowledge, English Language and study skills that you will need to progress to higher study and gain a nationally recognised qualification. At Westminster Kingsway College, we offer Access to Higher Education Diplomas at Level 3 in the following subjects: Business English and Media Studies Health and Human Sciences Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism Law Midwifery Nursing Pharmaceutical and Bio-Medical Sciences Science and Engineering Sports Science Teacher Training 24+ Advanced Learning Loan Each course is built around key study skills where you will learn how to make notes, write essays, carry out research, develop ideas and gain experience in the range of assessment methods used in Higher Education. You will study three core modules that are tailored to your needs and choice of pathway: Communication Research Skills Study Skills You will also be expected to study three or four specialist modules, depending on the subject you choose. In order to gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma qualification you must gain a minimum of 45 units at Level 3 and 15 at Level 2 or 3. Once you have successfully completed an Access to Higher Education Diploma you could progress onto a Higher Education course at a wide range of universities or Higher Education Institutions. If you have successfully completed the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Business or Hospitality, Leisure & Tourism you could progress onto a Foundation or Honours Degree course at the Victoria Centre. WestminsterKingsway Text WKC to Learners aged 24 and over who are starting a Further Education course at Level 3 like the Access to HE Diploma may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. This course offers specialist modules in Business & Management, Marketing and Finance & Accounting. You will study from a wide range of modules including Media Studies, English Language and English Literature. Successful completion of this new Access to Higher Education Diploma could enable you to progress onto study a range of English and Media degrees. This course is suitable for students aged 21 or over. Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if you have experience outside of full-time education, for example through work or travel. Applicants will be assessed through application, interview and tests in English and Maths. Where next? Progress to a Higher Education course in Business or Business related subjects including the Foundation Degree and BA Honours Degree in Business Management at Westminster Kingsway College. See page 28 for details. Josephine Ansah Access to Business Enterprising student, Josephine Ansah, wasn t sure about coming back into education but since joining the College she no regrets. This course is suitable for students aged 21 or over. Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if you have experience outside of full-time education, for example through work or travel. Josephine said: I was so scared coming back into education after a 15 year gap, but I wanted a new life and a new career and the College has helped me on my way. The teachers push us to achieve and now, through their eyes, I can see my potential. Westminster Kingsway College is like a big family. I feel that they teach you more in College as you get more personal attention and extra help. I am developing my own business further and have progressed with my studies. Josephine has now completed a Foundation Degree in Business and is currently studying for the BA Honours Degree in Business and Enterprise Management as well as being President of the College Enterprise Society. Umu Kabbia Access to Higher Education Diploma: Health and Human Sciences Umu said: I have found this to be a very challenging but successful course at Westminster Kingsway College. It is a really friendly College and it is close to home for me so it s perfect to get here. I like the fact that the College gives you extra support if you need it and the teachers are really great. 9 Access to Higher Education Diplomas L3 STUDENT PROFILE L3 Access to Higher Education Diploma Health & Human Sciences Soho Centre or Regent s Park Centre 15 hours per week 3 days per week 1 year from September Access to Higher Education Diploma Hospitality, Leisure & Tourism Victoria Centre 3 days per week 1 year from September You will study Biological Science, Physical Science, Psychology and Sociology. The course prepares you for a wide range of health related careers. It is similar in content to the Access Diploma for Nursing/Midwifery, but includes a greater variety of Science units, which upon successful completion could enable you progress to Degree courses including radiography, physiotherapy, speech therapy, paramedics, nutrition, community health and nursing. This course is suitable for students aged 21 or over. Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if you have experience outside of full-time education, for example through work or travel. Applicants will be assessed through application, interview and tests in English and Maths. Applicants for a Degree in health sciences are expected to have some experience of voluntary or paid work in a health care setting. Ideally you should also have some knowledge of a science-based subject or have a science-based GCSE or equivalent qualification. GCSE requirements for Access applicants: In order to progress to certain Higher Education courses, you may require GCSE English and/or GCSE Maths to fulfil your university entry requirements. Ideally you will already have GCSE Maths and English at grade A*-C. However we understand that not all students meet this requirement and so you will be considered for an Access course if you have one GCSE at grade A*-C in Maths or English and the other at grade D. Lorena Pellicer Ballestar Access to Higher Education Diploma: Health and Human Sciences Lorena Pellicer Ballestar was looking for a College to study an Access course and her sister recommended Westminster Kingsway College. Lorena said: I have had great support from my tutor at Westminster Kingsway College and the quality of the teaching here is very good. I am originally from Spain and I found the College to be really friendly. I would like to go onto study for a degree now that I have completed my Access course. You will develop your skills in Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism through study of the following modules: Hospitality which includes units in Gastronomy, Beverages, Accommodation services and Financial Control Leisure & Tourism which includes units in Airline Management, Events Management, Sustainable Tourism, Cruise Industry, International Itineraries and Special Interest Tourism Service Sector which includes units in Customer Service, Hospitality, Leisure & Tourism Industries, Marketing and Human Resources Successful completion your course could enable you to progress to Higher Education programmes in these industries. Irina Tonu Access to Higher Education Diploma: Law Irina Tonu originally came to the UK from Moldova and studied English before applying for her Access course. Irina said: I found the Access course quite hard as a second language English speaker but the College really inspired me to learn. The lecturers at Westminster Kingsway College are great. I have now applied to study for a Law Degree at the University of Westminster. Susannah Barnard Access to Higher Education Diploma: Midwifery Local Camden resident Susannah Barnard studied on the Access to Midwifery course. Susannah said: It was really hard work coming back to College and learning again but my confidence was boosted and I was really pleased to complete my course. I have had great support from the teachers and staff at Westminster Kingsway College. Successful completion of this course could enable you to progress to a Higher Education course in Nursing or Health Studies. This course is suitable for students aged 21 or over. Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if you have experience outside of full-time education, for example through work or travel. Applicants will be assessed through application, interview and tests in English and Maths. Please note that applicants for a Degree in Nursing are expected to have significant experience of voluntary or paid work in a health care setting. SG SafeGuard You will study Chemistry, Pharmacy and Bio-Medical Sciences, Biology and Maths. Successful completion of this course could enable you to progress to Higher Education courses in Pharmaceutical Sciences or the field of Bio- Medical Sciences. Students who do not have GCSE Maths work towards an equivalent qualification as part of the Access to Higher Education Diploma. This course is suitable for students aged 21 or over. Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if you have experience outside of full-time education, for example through work or travel. Applicants will be assessed through application, interview and tests in English and Maths. Ideally you should also have some knowledge of a science-based subject or have a sciencebased GCSE or equivalent qualification. Suad Abdi Ismail Access to Higher Education Diploma: Nursing Bright Chidera Egure Access to Higher Education Diploma: Pharmacy and Bio-medical Sciences For Suad Abdi Ismail, the College was recommended by her colleagues at work as she works as a support worker in an NHS hospital. Suad said: The first step to progress my career was taking the Access course at Westminster Kingsway College. The tutors were great and offered support with any problems that we had. Suad is now progressing to the University of West London to study for a Degree in Child Nursing. GCSE requirements for Access applicants: In order to progress to certain Higher Education courses, you may require GCSE English and/or GCSE Maths to fulfil your university entry requirements. A friend had told Bright Chidera Egure about Westminster Kingsway College and he was impressed when he came to visit. Bright said: It has been an amazing experience studying at Westminster Kingsway College. It was challenging switching from an arts background to a science subject but the College gave me lots of support. I liked the use of modern technology to study and being in central London was great. Foundation Degrees were launched in 2000 as a partnership between colleges, universities and employers. They are one of the fastest growing Higher Education qualifications in the UK. The following information outlines the fees applicable for your course and any financial support or loans available to you. The information included in this Guide is for Guidance only. The fees payable are those in force at the time of enrolment, which supersede any that may have been advertised previously. How much will it cost? College Membership Card The majority of students attending the College will have to pay this fee ( 25 in 2015). Your College Membership Card enables you to access College buildings and resources, such as borrowing books and laptops from Learning Centres. Resources Fee This covers the cost of essential course materials and resources for your chosen course and is payable on certain courses for all students. Tuition and Exam Fees The cost of your course will depend on your fee status, which depends on a number of factors such as residency. Normally, you are a home student if you are an EU/EEA national and have been resident in an EU or EEA country for the three years prior to 1 September on your year of entry to the College and have no restrictions on your stay in the UK. There are other ways for meeting the criteria of home student status and everyone is given individual advice at enrolment. You will be asked to provide evidence of your residency and/or nationality/immigration status at the point of enrolment and/ or when you come to your interview. You will need to bring documents, such as your passport, national ID card or immigration paperwork. You will be advised of any estimated costs you may be charged for your chosen programme of study. Any cost details you are given, which relate to a course of two or three years duration, may be for the first year only. It is likely that you will be asked to pay costs at a similar level (subject to an annual increase) for each subsequent year. If you are over 19 and applying for a 24+ Loan or Higher Education Student Loan then you will be given details of multi-year fees upfront. 26 24+ Advanced Learning Loan For Access to Higher Education Diploma students 24+ Loans FIND OUT MORE 24+ Loans Students aged 24 and over who are starting a Further Education course may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan. These loans can help to pay for your College tuition fees. These loans are not a Higher Education Student Loan. Most students aged 24 and over, studying at Level 3 and above at an approved college in England like Westminster Kingsway College, will qualify for these new loans from the UK government. It s easy to apply, household income isn t taken into account and there s no credit check. Students won t have to pay anything back until their income is over 21,000 a year. In addition, students who progress from an Access to Higher Education Diploma course to complete a Higher Education Degree can have their outstanding 24+ Advanced Learning Loan for the Access course written off. If your income falls below 21,000, repayments will stop and only restart when your income increases to more than 21,000 per year again. If the loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you subsequently go on to complete a Higher Education course you will not have to pay back your 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.
