Employer Update Carol Bischoff reported on the second rapid response employer survey sent. The questions were developed in response to the discussion at the July meeting: 1. Computer skills education is currently provided in nursing education; help us understand what s lacking? Provide examples. 2. Critical thinking used in documentation is currently an integral part of nursing education; help us further understand what s lacking. Provide examples. 3. Education teaches nursing students that most of the learning begins after graduation at the actual job. They have been provided with the scope of practice, entry level education, and now they must apply that learning to the nursing workforce. To help students be better prepared for the nursing workforce: a. What is the educational background and experiences employers are seeking of new PN graduates? b. What is the educational background and experience employers are seeking of new RN graduates? 4. One idea the curriculum committee discussed is having regional hybrid (part in person and part online), Practical Nursing Programs. If this was to occur, could the facilities contribute to this effort? a. In becoming a regional training center for lab or clinical education? b. Supplying nursing staff for assisting in lab and/or clinical education within your facility? 2 P a g e
5. Proposals for potential changes for nursing education could result in an increased number of RN students in nursing programs thus an increased number of clinical rotations will be necessary. a. Can your facility assist in accommodating this increase? b. What are the barriers? c. How can these barriers be removed? d. Are there creative solutions to this issue? Carol reported the response is not as robust as previously due to vacations. More responses can be gathered if needed. Great discussion focused around the top employer responses of needs: #1 need is for critical thinking What is critical thinking Jan shared some research completed on critical thinking major outcome is there is no magical answer that defines critical thinking How can we better promote and/or improve critical thinking in nursing education Students graduated with entry level critical thinking skills as evident by MT PN and RN NCLEX high pass rates This is not just a nursing issue, but all health care programs this issue confirmed by partners and education We can define math but how do you define critical thinking? Helpful techniques: Interprofessional activities/work Carol posted the responses in BOX in the workforce folder. Mary will post the it in the curriculum folder for August 19, 2015 Carol will have the AHEC Workforce Coordinators take the survey to their regional employers. 3 P a g e
Curriculum Committee Updates Simulation Flipping classroom Students teaching each other content Discussed how we can possible partner with employers to help each other to advance students beyond entry level just after gradation nursing residency program advantages & disadvantages Kalispell just starting a yearlong nursing residency program at KMC APIN nurse residence work Community based residency program in Iowa Cost vs orientation & retention of nurses Further specifics of the discussion on employer survey can be reviewed on the Mary will complete a research for presentation for employers comparing cost and benefits of nurse residence and orientation and retention of new nurses and report back to the committee Casey will send out a report she has on a nurse residency program auditory of today s meeting in BOX. Admissions & Diversity Committees have no new information. Will report at September 17, 2015 meeting PN The NLN Conference and PN curriculum will be part of September 17, 2015 meeting ASN Jan presented the most recent draft of the ASN curriculum. After a thorough discussion and review, a final draft was developed: Semester I Prerequisite semester and will stay the same Need to change the name of chemistry to match FLOC M121 & 122 General Chemistry and General Chemistry Nutrition will be woven throughout the curriculum 14 credit semester 4 P a g e
5 P a g e Semester 1 Fundamentals was changed from 4 credit didactic/2 credit lab to 3 credit didactic/3 credit lab 14 credit semester Semester 2 Maternal/Child course, after much discussion being separated into 2 separate courses. Maternal will be semester 3 as a 3 credit course of 2 credits didactic/1 credit clinical Rich discussion on community needs for student learning and clinical availability for these specialty areas This will decrease the total semester credits for 16 to 14 Semester 3 Pathophysiology is being left as a course and not woven due to the importance of nursing centered content and disease application focus. It is also a predictor of student s ability for program success in-depth discussion to the advantages & disadvantages with final decision to keep it a its own course Adult Nursing 1 will focus on introducing students to health across the life span which will be defined in the course descriptions - health promotion, prevention, gerontology and recognition that gerontology is not just in LTC facilities Introduction to Psychology placed back in as an independent course and not combined with MH. Mary shared research done on transferability of psychology as a combined course with feedback being most programs would not accept it. It is a foundational course for nursing students to build upon. It is also combining 6 credits of 2 courses and into one 3 credit course and it would be very difficult to meet student learning outcomes of both courses in three credits Semester 4 Pediatrics a separate course of 2 credits didactic/1 credit clinical Adult Nursing II clinical credits decreased from 3 credits to 2. Adding the pediatric clinical credit would make it a 5 clinic credit semester, which would be very difficult for students to meet. All agreed that Adult Nursing II learning outcomes can be met with 2 clinical credits 15 credit semester Semester 5 Stay the same 14 credit semester 2 floating clinical credits Discussion to how to use these credits and the rational. The final outcome is with the change of separating Maternal/Child, these are no longer needed. MCCC stated they could make it work with this change.
credits program credits is 71 (1530 hours) didactic = 52 credits (780 hours) lab = 7 credits (4 gen ed & 3 nursing) (210 hours) clinical = 12 credits (540 hours) Next Meetings: In person September 17, 2015, 1100 AM 3 PM Helena College Room GoToMeeting: You can also dial in using your phone.
