1 LANSING COMMUNITY COLLEGE CURRICULUM GUIDE Nursing, RN Option Associate in Applied Science Degree Curriculum Code: 0222 (Effective Fall Spring 2016) The Nursing Program at Lansing Community College is nationally accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, Georgia 30326, and is approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing. It utilizes the career ladder concept. The registered nurse program is offered in a 1-year Advanced Standing, 2-year, 3-year, or 2 nd Degree Accelerated track. There are specific prerequisites required for entry into the program. Building on these prerequisites, a student completing Level I and Level II receives a certificate of achievement and is eligible to take a national examination for Practical Nurse (PN) NCLEX-PN. A student successfully completing Level III and Level IV will receive an associate degree in applied science and is eligible to take the national examination for Registered Nurse (RN) NCLEX-RN. A current PN, licensed paramedic, or respiratory therapist may gain entry into Level III of the associate degree RN program as an advanced standing student through the Advanced Standing track. A 2 nd Degree Accelerated track for students with a bachelor s degree may gain entry into the Career Ladder Nursing Program. The Registered Nurse (RN) Program prepares the individual to care for clients of all ages in a variety of health care settings. As an essential member of the health care team, the RN is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating a plan of care for clients. The RN is required to assist clients in achieving their health goals through effective communication, decision making, problem-solving, management and technological skills. Registered nurses work in hospitals, clinics, offices, nursing homes, and home health care settings, in addition to schools, research facilities, and community agencies. The education and scope of practice of the RN is determined by state law. The student must successfully complete this program and the National Council Licensing Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) to practice as a registered nurse. This is a selective admission program. In order to be considered as a candidate for this program, students must meet basic admission requirements beyond those required for admission to the college. Many of the courses for this program are open only to students officially admitted to the Nursing Program. PREREQUISITES Students should see Course Offerings for course prerequisite information. See the Assessment and Placement Testing section for skills assessment and advising information.
