Nursing Education Revision Practical Nursing Education Changing from a 1+1 PN to ASN program to a separate three (3) semester 45 credit certificate program PN presently is a 51 credit, 4 semester program
Summary Comparison Present State Common Curriculum vs Proposed New State Common Curriculum Present State Common Nursing Curriculum 1+1 Practical Nursing (PN) & Associate Degree RN (ASN) Program Four (4) semester PN program at 52 credits Two (2) general education pre nursing semesters Two (2) PN nursing semesters Granted degree is an Associate of Applied Science Students graduate from the PN program and can apply directly to the ASN program with all prerequisites met Proposed New State Common Nursing Curriculum Separate Practical Nursing (PN) & Associate Degree RN (ASN) Program Three (3) semester PN program at 45 credits One (1) general education pre nursing semester Two (2) PN nursing semesters Granted degree is a Certificate Five (5) credits of general education and one transition course still needed to apply to the ASN program

Benefits of PN change: Provide students who desire to be an LPN a separate education route that teaches to the scope of practice for the LPN and not the first 2 semesters of an ASN program. The present design of PN programs is to prepare students to advance to an ASN program, not practice as an LPN. This has been difficult for both students and employers. Students who want to be an RN must do the PN education first It also does not provide LPNs to the workforce, as they continue on for the RN
Benefits of PN change: It will provide LPNs to the workforce sooner It will increase number of LPNs in Montana, as the program is designed for students who desire to be an LPN and will not be applying directly to an ASN program There is a population of individuals in MT who desire to be a nurse, but feel they cannot compete with students who desire to be an RN, so they do not apply Looking at having regional PN hybrid programs (part online, part on campus) to allow more rural/frontier areas of MT nursing education opportunities
LPNs Returning to Advance Degree to ASN LPNs who desire to advance their degree to ASN RN, will have 15 credits of general education courses to complete before they are eligible to apply to an ASN program. BIOH 201/202 (4 credits) BIOH 211/212 (4 credits) CHMY 121/122 (4 credits) M 115/121 (3 credits)
LPN Returning to Advance Degree to ASN There will be an entrance for the LPN into the ASN program. This will be at semester 3 of the ASN program. All nursing courses completed in the PN program will be applied to the ASN program PN Adult Health Nursing will be designed as ASN Adult Nursing I so it can be substituted and students will not have to repeat the course The transition between the old and the new is still in the nest step. Registrars, financial aid, and student services will be part of the planning process
HealthCARE Project Nursing ASN Education Curriculum Update Changing form a 1+1 PN to ASN program to a separate five (5) semester 71 credit ASN program Present ASN is a 72 credit, 6 semester program
Summary Comparison Present State Common Curriculum vs Proposed New State Common Curriculum Present State Common Nursing Curriculum Six (6) semester ASN program at 72 credits Two (2) general education pre-nursing semesters Two (2) PN nursing semesters Two (2) ASN program semesters Degree granted is an Associate degree Twelve (12) credits of general education still needed to apply to the RN-BSN Proposed New State Common Nursing Curriculum Five (5) semester ASN program at 71 credits One (1) general education pre-nursing semester Four (4) ASN program semesters Degree granted is an Associate degree It is a seamless progression with no needed credits for the RN-BSN program

Number Credits Credits Credits SOCI 101S NRSG 266 BIOL 250/ 251 Health and Illness of Adult Nursing II Health and Wellness of Mental Health Nursing Health and Illness of Pediatric Nursing Introduction to Sociology 3 3 Semester 5 14 Credits Health and Illness of Adult Nursing III Managing Client Care for the RN Microbiology with Lab Total Credits Semester Total ASN Program Credits (Hours) 52 (780) *9(270) 12 (495) 71 (1530) *9 total lab at 270 hours = 4 gen ed. Lab credits (120 hours) and 5 nursing lab credits (150 hours).
Benefits of ASN change: Provide students with an ASN education in five semesters based on the scope of practice for the RN and not a 1+1 PN scope of practice for the first 2 semesters, then RN scope of practice for the 2 semesters of ASN program. Provide an increased number of RNs in Montana. Not all colleges will have LPN programs. Those who choose not to have the LPN program will have more availability for ASN students There will be a seamless pathway for students to enter an RN-BSN completion program
HealthCARE Project Nursing Curriculum Update RN-BSN Education A three (3) semester 49 credit Bachelor Degree completion program. ASN 71 credit program plus RN-BSN 49 credit program, will equal the MUS required 120 credits for a bachelor degree.
Summary Comparison Present State Common Curriculum vs Proposed New State Common Curriculum Present State Common Nursing Curriculum Proposed New State Common Nursing Curriculum RN BSN Completion program at SKC, MT Tech and MSU Northern each have different programs RN BSN Completion programs for MUS campus will be three (3) semesters online common curriculum of 55 credits All general education prerequisites for BSN will be completed in the ASN program BSN can be completed in 8 semesters which currently takes 9 semesters if students complete the twelve (12) general education prerequisites required in 1 semester

Benefits of RN-BSN change: It will be a seamless pathway for students completing the ASN program It will be an online didactic/classroom program with 2 credits (90 hours) of scheduled clinical time in Community Nursing and Leadership & Management courses. These can be completed within their communities Program courses consist of many projects and field experiences students will complete within their communities to meet student learning outcomes.
Curriculum Implementation Timeline BOR March 2016 BON April 2016 Campus Curriculum Review Committees Approval by early February so we can be ready for the BOR in March Curriculum redesign available in print and on college websites as soon as possible after BOR, BON approval process completed Admit first cohort of students to prenursing PN & ASN courses Fall 2016 Admit first cohort of students to RN-BSN Spring 2019
HealthCARE Project Nursing Program Admissions Committee Update ASN Admission Proposed PN Admission Proposed Requirements Requirements Minimum GPA of 2.75 Minimum GPA of 2.5 Minimum of a B grade in Anatomy & Physiology I Minimum of a C Basic Human Biology All schools/programs will require a standardized readiness assessment examination. This test can be ATI TEAS, Kaplan, or HESI. The schools/programs may use the exams in the way that best meets the needs of the nursing program and student: For assessment of student knowledge, Advising, Part of application and student selection process Work for this committee still in process doing research of best-practice for Montana
HealthCARE Project Nursing Program Admissions Committee Update English as a Second Language (ELS) students will complete an assessment examination. Further investigation being completed to evaluate what ELS examinations are available in MT, what are the MUS requirements, and how these requirements compare to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) requirements The National Advancement Placement grading system will be used for students applying with high school AP courses All CLEP exams will be calculated as a C and no CLEP exams will be accepted for sciences courses
