COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: REQUIRED COURSES : 63 hours REGISTER ONLINE at call for more information Fundamentals of Digital SLR Photography 101 Topics include: camera modes and automatic features. The mysteries of aperture shutter speed, ISO, and white balance will be explained. Everyday situations such as family gatherings, vacation sporting events, techniques of using flash, and nature photography are covered. (7 mtgs) 15 hrs Fundamentals of Digital SLR Photography 102 More advanced topics include: bracketed exposures, high dynamic range (HDR), producing panoramas, sports and action photography, available light, and night photography. Survey image management and image manipulation programs. Discuss how to store images and upload to website, and print. Introduction to free or inexpensive digital imaging programs such as Picasa, GIMP, Fast Stone Image Viewer. (7 mtgs) 15 hrs Page 2
3 Introduction to Interior and Studio Lighting Topics covered: The basic concepts of artificial lighting will be covered in this course. By understanding the type, direction, color and quality of interior light you can produce great photographs. Topics to be covered include metering and exposing for interior lighting, qualities of the different types of lights, and when additional lighting may be needed. Strobe lighting and modifiers will be covered along with the techniques of interior portrait lighting. (7 mtgs) 15 hrs Photography Business Fundamentals The business of photography is more than making great photographs. How to make people aware of your photography services or persuade them to hire you is a big part of the business. You need samples of your work, prices for your services, and ways to produce your product. An understanding of tax and business operation is also needed. New methods of advertising and working with your clients such as online proofing and ordering will be discussed.(6 mtgs) 12 hrs Capstone Course Certificate students will meet with the lead instructor for portfolio evaluation and selection criteria for public display; images from all courses taken will be evaluated. Additionally, accumulated knowledge from all courses taken relevant to beginning a photography business will be evaluated. Topics assessed will include composition and design, an understanding of the principles of lighting and exposure, camera lens and attachment selection, and an understanding of digital image software. 3mtg/6hrs COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: Required 32 hrs of Digital Software Courses: Held in Summerville campus, 2500 Walton Way, computer lab Fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop CS6 Learn the basics of this retouching software and the image editing possibilities for your photographs. Specific Photoshop operations such as adjusting brightness and contrast, removing unwanted distractions, cropping, and facial retouching will be covered. Time will be devoted to creating panoramas, composites, creating borders, and preparing images for printing, display and . 7 meetings/14 hours Process and Print (Required course as part of 32 hours of software courses) The goal of most photographers is to produce a print to frame or show to others. You ve taken some great photographs and you may have even applied some creative techniques with Photoshop, now how do you get the image out of the computer. The basics of preparing digital files for printing and online use will be covered including resolution and file types. This workshop will cover the scope of output options that are available to the digital photographer. Print outlets such as home printers, local printing options and online labs will be discussed. 2 meetings/6 hours Intermediate Adobe Photoshop Expand your knowledge of Adobe CS6 and explore the creative side of Photoshop. Practice using the toolbar, image adjustments, layers, selections and filters to edit photos. Save hours of computer time with shortcuts, actions and batch processing. Work on fixing images, adding text and retouching photos. Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop or substantial experience. 6 meetings/12 hours Advanced Techniques in Digital Software 14 hours Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop Restoring Old Photographs in Adobe Photoshop Time will be spent on copying the original photograph and restoring faded color. Other areas covered will be removing scratches, replacing torn corners, and softening the effect of folds in the image. 3 meetings/6 hrs Page 3
4 Retouching Photographs in Adobe Photoshop Learn the ins and out of photo retouching with a professional expert. Areas to be covered include fixing blemishes, reducing wrinkles, enhancing eyes and mouth and hair. 2 meetings/ 4hrs The Black and White Digital Darkroom Covers the various methods of black and white conversion in Adobe Photoshop and the use of filters during exposure. Time will be spent on the various computer programs that are specifically made for B&W conversion that mimic the look of traditional B&W films. Traditional techniques such as opening shadows, darkening highlights, dodging and burning, and the selection of paper contrast grades will be discussed. 2 meetings/4 hrs COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: ELECTIVE COURSES Prerequisite for all electives is Fundamentals of Photography 101; some courses have additional prerequisites. Location and Outdoor Portraiture Topics covered: Lighting, composition, posing in a relaxed setting, lens selection, controlling depth of field. Field trips to various locations. 6 meetings/12 hours Introduction to Studio Portraiture Studio portraiture is one of the most creative and rewarding areas of photography. An understanding of lighting and posing is essential to success in this field. Time will be spent on the types of lights and light modifiers along with traditional posing styles to ensure great results. The student will work with portrait lights to produce images related to the techniques learned during the class. Preferred Course Background: Interior Lighting and Fundamentals meetings/12 hours Advanced Studio Portraiture Moving beyond the Introduction to Studio Portraiture class time will be spent on refining the techniques of lighting and posing. The posing of couples and small groups will also be covered. The use of reflector panels and the techniques of high-key and low-key portraiture will be covered and portraits made using these techniques. Prerequisite: Intro to Studio Portraiture and Interior Lighting. 6 meetings/12 hours Introduction to Scenic and Landscape Photography Many photographers obtain great joy and fulfillment from landscape photography. There is more to a good landscape or scenic photograph than just pointing the camera at the scene. Factors such as sun angle, lens selection, and time of day all contribute to the creation of a great photograph. Time will be spent on location in the local area capturing scenic images. 6 meetings/12 hours Wedding and Event Photography This on location workshop will be an introduction to what is involved in photographing social events; whether it is weddings, anniversaries, bar and bat mitzvahs, or birthday parties. How to assess the ambient light and the use of on-camera and off-camera strobes will be demonstrated. The techniques of basic group posing will be covered. We ll shoot at two different locations. Specialized Topics: Macro: In the Flower Garden Macro photography refers to taking close up photographs of small subjects. Non-nature macro subjects include stamps, coins and jewelry. Popular subjects in nature include insects, bugs, and flowers. This workshop will concentrate on the close up photography of flowers and plants. Time will be spent on the concepts of macro photography including lens choice, both natural and artificial lighting, the use of reflectors, depth-of-field, and background choice. Field trips to local gardens and botanical areas will be included. Page 4
5 DSLR Cinematography Series Introduction to DSLR Videography The new Digital SLR cameras allow the photographer to capture video in addition to still images. This opens a new area for the modern photographer, but the DSLR differs from the typical video camera. The choice of lenses, aperture and focus point are important to the video results obtained. Get a flavor of the videography process from shooting to editing. 8 hrs This course is a pre-requisite for the series of workshops. Advanced Shooting Techniques in DSLR Video Build upon the techniques learned in Intro to DSLR Videography workshop. Successful DSLR videography is more than setting the camera on auto and pushing record. Practice making creative shots using the tools available to the DSLR camera. Learn how to master exposure, control depth of field, framing and camera motion to enhance your shooting skills. 6 hrs Prerequisite: Introduction to DSLR Videography Introduction to Field Audio for DSLR Videography Audio is half of the picture show and it s often overlooked in video production. Learn how to capture field audio correctly using portable mixers, external microphones (wireless and hard wired) and their associated accessories. Discussion will focus on different types of microphones and their uses. Hands-on practice will include recording on-camera talent and recording voice-over in the field. 6 hrs Prerequisite: Introduction to DSLR Videography Introduction to Field Lighting for DSLR Videography Good lighting is essential for creating and capturing the mood of a scene. Explore how to use lighting in videography to paint the picture." Some locations require extensive lighting while others may simply use available light. Analyze your lighting needs and then use professional lighting equipment to create the desired scene.
