1 TV and Video Production Chaffey College DEVELOPMENT CRITERIA NARRATIVE Criteria A. Appropriateness to Mission. Chaffey College improves lives within the diverse communities it serves through equal access to quality occupational, transfer, general education and foundation programs in a learning-centered environment where student success is highly value, supported, and assessed. The Television and Video Production Certificate of Achievement (12 to fewer than 18 units) is in alignment with the college s mission, goals and objectives. The program is directed towards the appropriate level for community colleges and reflects the academic rigor expected of the first two years of college and reflects systematic instruction in the field of television and video production, guided by student learning outcomes to gauge mastery in the relevant knowledge skills and abilities expected within the field of television and video production. 1. Statement of Program Goals and Objectives. The Television and Video Production Certificate of Achievement will prepare students for careers as film and video editors. Competencies to be mastered by students completing the Television and Video Production certificate include critical thinking, analysis, critical reflection, communication and problem solving related to the techniques, functions, technologies and creative processes of television and video productions. Typical tasks of film and video editors include the following: Organize and string together raw footage into a continuous whole according to scripts or the instructions of directors and producers. Review assembled films or edited videotapes on screens or monitors to determine if corrections are necessary. Trim film segments to specified lengths, and reassemble segments in sequences that present stories with maximum effect. Determine the specific audio and visual effects and music necessary to complete films. Set up and operate computer editing systems, electronic titling systems, video switching equipment, and digital video effects units to produce a final product. Select and combine the most effective shots of each scene to form a logical and smoothly running story. Edit films and videotapes to insert music, dialogue, and sound effects, to arrange films into sequences, and to correct errors, using editing equipment. Cut shot sequences to different angles at specific points in scenes, making each individual cut as fluid and seamless as possible. Mark frames where a particular shot or piece of sound is to begin or end. Verify key numbers and time codes on materials. The goals and outcomes for the Television and Video Production Certificate of Achievement include the following: 1. Upon the successful completion of the Television and Video Production Certificate of Achievement, students will be able to demonstrate technical expertise in single and multi-camera production. 2. Upon the successful completion of the Television and Video Production Certificate of Achievement, students will be able to demonstrate technical expertise in audio operations. 3. Upon the successful completion of the Television and Video Production Certificate of Achievement, students will be able to demonstrate technical expertise in set lighting. 4. Upon the successful completion of the Television and Video Production Certificate of Achievement, students will be able to demonstrate technical expertise in set design.

2 2. Catalog description. This certificate trains students for career paths in the field of television and video production. Television Production focuses on the technical and storytelling aspects of single camera and multi-camera production, including camera operation, microphone placement, audio operation, lighting, art direction, and set design. Students will have hands-on experience in Chaffey College s state-of the art, high definition TV studio. Courses assist students develop communication skills, computer skills, problemsolving skills, and technical skills needed for employment the motion picture and entertainment industries. 3. Master Planning The Television and Video Production certificate program provides a challenging and technology- driven learning environment designed for students who want to enhance, refine, and polish their television or video production creations. Courses of study follow the traditional modes of the production process while providing students with a dynamic and innovative learning environment. Students may arrange their own program of courses in Television and Video Production. In collaboration with the college s mission statement, the purpose of the Broadcasting program is to provide a diverse student population with quality occupational and transfer course and is comprised of nine areas of study: 1) Survey of Broadcasting & Electronic Media which meets the general education and transfer needs of Chaffey's students; (2) Screenwriting for Television (New with lab component) prepares students to create story ideas and development, writing of industry formatted broadcast media screenplays; (3) Television Production with lab component, focuses on the technical and storytelling aspects of single camera production; (4) Multi-camera production with lab component, is taught in a 'state of the art' high definition TV studio; (5) Post Production editing with lab component, is housed in a 30 seat Mac computer lab; (6) Radio Production with lab component includes an on-air 1630 AM radio station with live radio Internet streaming, (7) Audio and Announcing with lab component and corresponding audio production lab; (8) High Definition Cinematography (new with lab component) uses motion picture cameras for the creation of drama, documentary, commercials and music video projects; and (9) Internship and experiential job site opportunities that provide students access to Hollywood Studios, Independent Production and Post Production facilities, as well as local cable and greater Los Angeles area

3 Network and Independent Television stations. (10) Course Articulation with Jurupa High School - Fontana, CA (Broadcast 60 ). The Television and Video Production certificate is a low unit certificate of career preparation specifically targeted for employment within the radio industry. 5. The Television and Video Production certificate will exist in the Broadcasting Department. It will compliment of certificates and degrees in this department, including the current A.S. degree in Broadcasting, as well as the newly proposed low unit certificates of career preparation in post production, screenwriting, motion picture production and on-air radio production. This certificate was created at the recommendation of the Advisory Committee which recommended that curriculum be created to meet the needs of the industry. 7.
