Video Production Glossary Some of the most common terms used in the industry An ST16 Ltd. White Paper V2 SC Action! (From Director) Go / Do it now!. Audio post- production or Audio dubbing Audio sweetening of the edit. Ensures consistent sound levels and clarity of speech. Sound effects may also be added at this stage if required. This extra level of detail can make your film more engaging and give it a slicker feel. Basecamp Online project management software with secure access. Allows collaborative working, giving access to documents, images, videos and milestones online. Batch Capturing Part of the editing process. Any tape formats need the contents of the tape to be captured or transferred onto the hard- disk drive of a computer based edit suite. This process is not required when using disk or solid state based video recording formats as they already store the video information as an electronic file. Beta SP or Betacam SP Old tape- based analogue video format. Buzz Track The atmospheric sound from a location that is recorded and used when editing to mask any variations in background noise on interviews and drama sequences. Camera Person Responsible for recording pictures to the Directors specification. The camera person will also light a set when a separate lighting technician is not required. Compression Process by which an electronic video file is created from a video edit. This process is also used to reduce file sizes depending on distribution.
Cut! (From Director/Producer) Term used when the Chief Executive goes off- message. Cuts Only Edit See our white paper on the approval process. Depth of Field (DOF) The distance between the nearest and most distant object in a shot that are in focus. Digi- Beta or Digital Betacam Tape based digital video format technically superior to DVCAM. Once frequently used in high- end corporate and television production this is now starting to be superseded by high definition formats. Digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) Offers a cost effective way of capturing modern looking video footage with a film effect and short depth of field. Director Oversees the creative side of the film making process. The best ones make the project interesting to watch and tell great stories. DVCAM Digital Video tape format giving great performance at competitive cost. Still used widely in corporate, daytime broadcast programming and news gathering. DVD Digital Versatile Disc High- capacity, high- quality video disc capable of including other files such as PDFs. Final Edit See our white paper on the approval process. Instant Preview A secure area of a web- site were electronic copies of video edits can be downloaded for review. Grading The process after editing where colour- correction takes place and other parameters such as contrast and saturation are adjusted to give a specific consistent look and feel to the pictures. This final stage of an edit is about giving your film a polished finish. HD or High Definition Digital video format that captures images at a much higher resolution than standard definition formats such as Digital- Betacam and
DVCAM. Full HD is at 1920x1080 resolution shot with progressive scan, often referred to as 1080p. HDV HD digital tape format developed for the consumer market. IVCA International Visual Communication Association The Industry body which any video or film production company worth their salt subscribes to. Jib Crane arm facilitating shots that vary in height over the course of the shot. Think pop- concert Lighting Camera Person - (See Camera Person) MiniDV Digital video tape format utilising small cassettes, developed for the consumer market. This format records in SD. NTSC - TV colour standard used predominantly in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan. The PAL colour system is used in the UK so NTSC video material played on a UK player will appear black and white. Offline Edit Usually includes bringing video footage into the edit suite and the process of deciding which piece of footage will sit where. Online Edit Fine tuning of the timing of edits and adding transitions and effects. PAL - TV Colour system used in the UK and most of Europe but not suitable for the USA Also see NTSC, SECAM Pod- casting Recording and distributing an MP3 file for playback on computer, ipod or similar. Post- production Generic term for editing, graphics and audio- dubbing Producer The project manager : Oversees the mechanics, logistics and content of a production. A good one ensures a project is well structured, delivered on- time, on- budget and on- message to the client s satisfaction. Production Music Music produced specifically for use in video and audio production and not usually for sale in retail outlets. Varies massively in quality from near commercial release standard to the down- right dire.
Progressive Scan An alternative to interlaced video. Progressive scan displays all lines of an image in every frame, interlaced video shows half the lines in alternate frames. This gives a better picture and is more suitable for use online. Quicktime (*.mov file) Apple s electronic video file format. RED A high end camera system that offers resolution way beyond HD as well as a huge dynamic range and other benefits. Used on many Hollywood movies this system is more expensive to use but provides incredible results. Resolution The number of pixels or picture elements in a given square inch of screen space. Generally, the higher the number of pixels the better the image quality. Rough Edit See our white paper on the approval process. Running- up! (From Camera Person to Director) Camera is in record mode, but the tape mechanism in the camera is accelerating to and is not at full speed yet. See also Speed! Rushes The un- edited footage straight from the camera. SECAM TV Colour system used in France. See also NTSC, PAL SD Standard Definition Anything lower in resolution than High Definition Solid State Rather than recording onto tape or disc, many cameras now record onto memory cards, this type of format is called solid state as there are no moving parts. Solid state offers a very robust storage system and a faster work flow, keeping costs low for clients. Sound Recordist Records audio on location. They ensure that sound is crisp, clear and free from distortion and is in context for the location. Speed! (From Camera Person) Tape mechanism in the camera is running at full speed and filming can commence. Does not apply to disk- based cameras that achieve speed instantly, although the term may still be used to alert the director camera and sound are ready to go.
Stand- by! (From Director) Everybody be quiet! Actors, presenters or interviewees to take their start position and think about their opening words. Camera person and sound recordist to start recording. Steadi- cam Strap- on harness worn by camera people to facilitate smooth, moving shots over a variety of terrain including steps. Sticks Industry slang for tripod Streaming Video file viewable over the internet which brings the video information from a server as it is playing. Tracking Vehicle Land- Rover Discovery 3, Range Rover or similar vehicle, with supple suspension, which facilitates safe filming of another moving vehicle. Widescreen See 16:9 Wild- track See Buzz Track WMV (*.wmv) Windows electronic video file format Work Flow The process of filming, capturing and editing footage. XDCAM Robust and high- capacity DVD disc format from Sony based on Blu- ray technology XDCAM HD As XDCAM with the ability to record High Definition images Wrap The term used to declare filming is finished on the project, however it is often used at the end of day of filming. 16:9 Widescreen format. Screen proportions expressed as a ratio of width to height i.e. if the screen is 16cm wide it would be 9 cm high 4:3 Older squarer screen aspect ratio. Screen proportions expressed as a ratio of width to height i.e. if the screen is 4 inches wide it would be 3 inches high.
