Crescent Engineering College is sponsored by the All India Islamic Foundation, 272 (688), Anna Salai, Chennai The members of the Foundation are eminent personalities in various walks of life such as education, research, industry, business, administration etc. The President of the Foundation, Alhaj Dr. B.S. Abdur Rahman is the Chairman of the Governing Body of the College and is also the Managing Trustee of the Seethakathi Trust Chennai, which has established schools par excellence at Vandalur, Chennai for boys and at Nungambakkam, Chennai-6 for girls (and also a leading Arts and Science College for women at Kilakkarai.) The Foundation has dedicated itself to the cause of education and runs girls schools at Nagore and Madurai also. A Teacher Training Institute and College of Education for Girls and Nursing School at Madurai and an Arabic College at Vandalur, Chennai are also run by the AIIF. The Foundation pays special attention to impart technical education to the educationally, socially and economically backward communities. The College The College was established in 1984 by an order of the Government of Tamil nadu as a Muslim Minority College. It is located at the Seethakathi Estate, Vandalur, Chennai , in the outskirts of Chennai city on the G.S.T. Road, (Chennai - Trichy National Highway) 7 km from Tambaram and 2 km from Vandalur Railway Station. Being adjacent to the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, it is easily accessible by city buses. 3

7 Management Quota : Muslim candidates from any part of India are eligible to apply against the Minority quota. Candidates of any community are eligible to apply against NRI quota and vacant seats, if any. Admissions will be made on the basis of merit among the applicants. Minimum Qualification (as per the stipulation of the Government of Tamilnadu) A Pass in HSC (Academic) or its equivalent with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry : or A Pass in HSC (Vocational Stream) with Engineering / Technology vocational subject and any one of the related subjects like Mathematics or Physics or Chemistry : or A Pass in Diploma in Engineering of the State Board of Technical Education and Training, Tamilnadu : or Any other equivalent qualification approved by the State Board of Technical Education and Training / Higher Secondary Board of Tamil Nadu and Anna University. Note Candidates who are qualified as on 1st July of the year of admission (i.e. who have passed the qualifying examinations held during the year of admission or earlier) only will become eligible for admission to B.E. 8 Minimum Marks Note : The minimum marks given below are as prescribed by Govt. of Tamil Nadu. If any change is announced by Govt. that will be applicable. For SC/ST candidates, a mere pass in the qualifying examination will suffice. Others should have obtained the following minimum marks. A) H.S.C. (Academic) and other equivalent candidates. 9 UNDER NRI QUOTA 1. The candidates are required to have obtained a just pass in the Higher Secondary Examination (10+2 pattern / equivalent). 2. NRI financially supporting the candidate must be a blood relation such as father/mother/brother/sister/uncle/aunt only. 3. Candidate must furnish the Xerox copies of the following supporting documents. a) NRI status certificate of the financial supporter issued by the Indian embassy in the respective country under their seal. b) NRI Bank account pass book of the financial supporter. c) Passport of the financial supporter. d) Nativity Certificate of the financial supporter. e) Evidence for payment of development charges of US $ f) Proof of relationship of sponsor g) Employment certificate from the employer. h) Eligibility certificate from Anna University, Age Limit : No Age Limit Certificates Only attested copies of the following certificates are to be enclosed with the application. 1. 10 General 1.1 Social Status (wherever applicable) BC/MBC/DNT/SC/ST candidates should obtain a certificate of Social Status in the prescribed form (which is a duly numbered and printed card) available with the Revenue Authorities concerned, failing which they will be treated as O.C. candidates. The candidates should produce at the time of admission, the original community certificate and submit a xerox copy duly attested by officers of Grade A or B for the College records. Candidates are warned, that if the community recorded in the certificates produced by them from the competent authority is not included in the list of Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribes or Backward Class or MBC / DNT as the case may be, they will be considered only along with others and the privilege that has been given, on the presumption that the candidate belongs to SC / ST / BC / MBC & DNT will be withdrawn. The selection made already on the basis of community privilege will be cancelled and they will be ranked along with others. If they are not qualified to be considered along with others their application will be treated as rejected. 1.2 Recognition of educational qualification Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination of a University/Board other than the Tamilnadu Board / CBSE exam conducted in Tamilnadu and have been selected will be admitted to the college after their qualification is recognised by the Anna University. The candidates concerned should, therefore, write to the Registrar of the Anna University in advance to obtain and produce in original, the documentary evidence of acceptance by the University of their qualifications prior to the admission. Validity of Selection The selection of candidates will be provisional, subject to their being found eligible on verification of their original certificates at the time of admission. The Principal reserves the right of refusal to admit the candidate, if on verification of the original certificate, the candidate is found to be ineligible for admission or any suppression of particulars detected. Further, if the candidate is found to be ineligible at a later stage of his / her admission, the college has the right to cancel the admission at whatever stage the candidate may be, at that time. 8

11 A joint declaration should be signed at the time of admission by the candidate and his/her parent/guardian to abide by the rules and regulations prevalent at the time of admission and that may be introduced during the course of their study in the format of which a specimen copy is given in the Annexure II. Candidates should ensure that correct information regarding marks, age and community is furnished by him/her in the application. If it is found that the information furnished by him / her is not correct, then, i) he/she will forfeit the admission no matter at what stage of the course he/she will be in at that time. ii) he/she is liable to be debarred from pursuing any course of study for a period of 3 years. iii) legal action will be initiated against him/her, for furnishing wrong information. 12 Placement Cell A Placement Cell headed by a Full time Placement & Training Officer with wide industrial experience is functioning in the College. One faculty co-coordinator and two student representatives from each department assist the Placement & Training Officer. 100% placement for all eligible students through the Placement Cell. Entrepreneurship Development Cell An ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT CELL (EDC) of this college was established on its own initiative in the year 1999 with the Principal as its Director and has been actively conducting programmes in entrepreneurship with concerted initiatives to promote entrepreneurship among the students. Based on the cell s performance National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) of department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India has provided financial support to the Cell for five years from Industry-Institute Partnership Cell To develop the linkages with industries, the Institute has established the Industry-Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC) in the year 2002 with grants from AICTE and Additional financial support from the Management. The Industry Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC) was started to foster institute-industry interaction. Serving as link between the Institute and the Industries, it aims at encouraging and promoting consultancy and research work by the faculty and students. It serves as a catalyst in the discharge of these tasks. It also co-ordinates activities relating to joint collaborative Programmes with institutes in other countries, in-plant training to students, guest lectures from industry people, training programmes for employees and Industrial Associate ship scheme. 13 ANNEXURE - I SCOPE Civil Engineering Civil Engineering, the mother of all Engineering disciplines, deep rooted in Design & Construction and Management of Structural, Irrigation, Water Resources and Transportation system has now widened its scope to Geotechnical, Environmental, Remote Sensing and Material Resources areas. The demand for technical manpower with Civil Engineering background for creating basic infrastructural needs such as housing, water supply, drainage, enviornmental control, Airport, Docks and Harbours, Highways and Railways, industrial needs in chemical and related industries, Nuclear Power Stations, Space Research Structures etc. is ever increasing. In this hitech age, computer application in Civil Engineering is another opportunity. Potential for gainful employment in Government, Public and Private Sectors for Civil Engineering graduates is therefore very bright in the coming years. Opportunity for self employment in construction business for Civil Engineers is plenty, with the ever increasing needs of Housing, Roads, water supply etc. in view of growth of population and the consequent needs. Opportunities for overseas employment in Western, Middle East and other Countries are also plenty. Mechnical Engineering Mechanical Engineering covers a wide range of fields of Engineering. Initially started with Design of Machines and Equipment, Energy Generation and Conversion, Materials Technology, Manufacturing, Maintenance of Mechanical Systems it has broadened its scope to Transportation, Vehicles, Environment Control, Space Technology, Automation, Fluidics, Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer aided design and Computer Integrated manufacturing etc. It also includes Production and Industrial Engineering and inter-disciplinary areas such as Biomedical Engineering and Industrial marketing thereby widening the scope further for employment in Government, Public and Private Sectors. 11

Electrical And Electronics Engineering Electrical Engineering concerns broadly with Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Power System Protection Testing and Control, Electrical Machines, Instruments, Power Electronics etc. Special subjects included in this course such as Electron Devices, Circuits, Digital Electronics, Communication Engineering, Computers, Microprocessors, Computer Languages, Artificial Intelligence are added advantages to the graduates. The Hardware subjects include Digital Electronics, Computer Networks and Distributed systems, along with the associated subjects on System Software and training in Design, Development and Maintenance aspects of Computer Systems. Computer Applications and Methods cover all the relevant Software topics including Data Base Management Systems, Software Engineering, and the latest computing techniques, like Neural Networks, Distributed computing etc. The B.E. Graduates in Computer Science & Engineering have a wide scope of employment both in Computer Software and Hardware Industries, inside and outside the country. 12

15 Electronics And Communication Engineering Electronics and Communication Engineering covers Telecommunication, Radio and Satellite Communication coupled with Computers, Microwaves, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence. The phenomenal development of Telecommunication and Information services like Telephone, Fax Internet, Cellular Phones, T.V., Radio and the manufacture and marketing of related equipment in this field worldwide demands a large number of Electronics and Communication Engineers, opening up great opportunity to these graduates. Every Factory, Office, Institution and Home is increasingly oriented electronically, combined with gadgets of information technology and hence the need for Electronics and Communication engineers will be phenomenal in the years to come. Instrumentation And Control Engineering Instrumentation and Control Engineering, an interdisciplinary area provides a wide exposure in all the fields of engineering like Electrical, Mechanical, Computer and even Medical related fields and prepares an overall total engineer to shoulder key positions in vital industries and systems in the nation and abroad. With the advent of new processes and increased automation in Industry in the Hi-tech age, the precise measurement, Control and Instrumentation in all the fields of engineering have become increasingly important. The state of the art instrumentation including Computerised control is in use in almost all the process industries like Iron and Steel, Petrochemical, Paper, Pharmaceutical, Fertilizer. Coming decades would see further development in the dynamic technology of Instrumentation and Control that would extend also to a large number of medium and small industries, increasing the need for trained personnel to design, manufacture, operate, maintain and service instrument and control systems that form a vital part of any country s industrial growth.the liberalisation/privatisation and globalisation policy of India opens up greater and further opportunities for employment all over the nation and the world especially in Middle East. The opportunity for self-employment through small scale industries in instrumentation is plenty in this field. Since Instrumentation and Control has close relations with Computer, Communication, Electronics and Electrical areas, employment in such related fields is also very high. 13

16 Polymer Technology Polymer Technology course is another interdisciplinary course and covers a wide range of subjects. The use of polymeric materials in commodity and engineering application is ever increasing with the advent of new generation plastics, elastomers and fibres. These light weight and cost effective materials in fact, have replaced already many conventional expensive materials such as metal, wood, ceramics, etc. The ever increasing demand of polymeric materials at the lower cost requires advanced technology with modern equipment to cope with the heavy world-wide competition. With this in view the polymer technology course is designed in such a fashion that it imparts knowledge in both theoretical and practical aspects, of designing a polymer product by selecting proper materials, process and equipment. This course is an amalgamation of material science and mechanical engineering with process principles drawn from chemical engineering. The basic knowledge of other engineering fields like electrical and electronics and instrumentation and control, required for successful designing of process equipment to get effective and economically feasible products are included in the course. The polymer technologists are considered to be specialists in a wide areas such as material science, equipment and mould design, processing and engineering application of polymers. The future of a polymer technologist is bright with employment opportunity in design of mould and dies using CAD/CAM, as a process engineer in the factory shop floor, as a material specialist, as a vendor development engineer, as a scientist in research and development organisation and so on. In India the arrival of multinationals has opened greater scope and better opportunity for the polymer technologist to be an expert in this field in this area of plastics. Scope for becoming an entrepreneur and small scale industrialist in the polymer area is very high to be supportive to these industries of national and international origin. Information Technology Information Technology is concerned with the generation, storage, dissemination, distribution, analysis and use of information. 14

17 The allied areas of Computer Science and Communication Engineering provide concepts in fundamentals of computers, operating systems and communication networks. The course is centered around the most heavily used Internet. The students are expected to be capable of starting dot.com companies, take all information related responsiblilities of large corporations as Information Officers initially, as Chief Information Officer at middle level and eventually Chief Executive Officer or Chairman. The students are exposed to finance, management, multimedia, data bases and other supporting disciplines as well, to prepare them for senior management positions in industry and government. That I am aware that the curriculum for the various courses is not rigid and that my son/daughter/ward will follow the syllabi for the various courses in force at the time of his/her admission and that any revision or modification made in the syllabi during the course of his/ her study in the institution will be binding on him/her. 5. That I am aware that if my son/daughter/ward does not get minimum of 50 percent of marks in the day today valuation of his/her work and progress, he/she will not be sent up for the University Examination. 6. That in case my son s/daughter s/ward s progress in studies is uniformly poor in the institution his/her studies are liable to be terminated by the issue of Transfer Certificate. 7. That in case my son/daughter/ward becomes a scholarship holder or enjoys educational concessions like half-fee, or full-fee, etc. and does not show special progress or if his/her conduct and character are not good, the scholarships or educational concessions are liable to be cancelled. 8. That my son/daughter/ward is aware that breach of discipline and rules or bad conduct in the N.S.S. or extra-curricular activities will also entail summary forfeiture of the seat in the institution, in addition to such other proceedings that may be taken against him/her. 9. I am aware that if my son/daughter/ward is admitted into the College/ hostel, he/she will strictly abide by the rules and regulations in force in the college/hostel and any breach of discipline or rules or any unruly conduct or undersirable activities will be summarily dealt with, by forfeiture of the seat both in the institution and hostel, in addition to such other proceedings that may be taken against him/her. 16
