1 UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, OSMANIA UNIVERSITY, HYDERABAD SECTION ONE: Unique context, mission, size and shape The University College of Engineering (UCE) is one of the oldest and the premier institution in Andhra Pradesh, established in the year 1929, eleven years after the formation of Osmania University. The College celebrated Golden Jubilee year in 1979, Diamond Jubilee in 1989 and Platinum Jubilee year in Autonomous status was conferred in The College was short listed for IIT status in the year The College is chosen as one of the Lead Institutions under TEQIP by the Government of India with funding by the World Bank. The College is adjudged as Best Engineering College in the Country during by ISTE and is known for top ranking and talented students in B.E. and M.E./M.Tech. Courses. Enrolments: Bachelor of Engineering (BE) level offering 6 courses with intake of 320 students Master of Engineering (ME) level offering 18 courses with intake of 293 students Ph.D with a current enrolment of 292. Principal of the College. - Member/Secretary SECTION TWO: Decision authority - who has authority to make what decisions Enrolments: Admissions to B.E. Courses is based on EAMCET, a State Level Entrance Examination Conducted by A.P. State Council of Higher Education, Govt. of A.P. Admissions to M.E./M.Tech courses is based on GATE Score and PGECET, a state wide entrance examination conducted by APSCHE, Govt. of A.P. 3

4 Admission to Ph.D is based on entrance examination conducted by University and an interview as per the guidelines of UGC/AICTE Staffing ratios: As per UGC/AICTE norms i.e. 1: Budget allocations: Salaries to the staff are paid by the University from the Block Grant granted by the Govt. of A.P. Budget allocation for Infrastructural and Development activities is made from IRG with the due approval of Governing Body of the Institution. Academic structures, curriculum, delivery and use of technology: The College was granted Autonomy in The syllabi is framed by BOS constituted with academic, industry and R&D experts. The syllabi is revised every year to take into account the latest developments. The same is approved by Academic Council, a higher body. Academic and Financial decisions are taken by Head, guided by Departmental Committee and Departmental Research Committee and the Principal guided by Governing Body. Quality assurance/standards (including assessment of student work and teachers performance) The University is reaccredited with A Grade by NAAC. The college is selected for upgrading to IIT Status by MHRD, Govt. of India. The college is applying for NBA reaccredidation. The College has introduced the Credit system in all the branches of four-year BE Programme from the year compatible with global practices. A Rigorous evaluation system is in force to evaluate the performance the students. Links with industry and local communities: The College established a close linkage with Engineering and IT industries in and around Hyderabad. Eight weeks internship is offered at Second Semester of Third Year BE during Summer Vacation. The following are the industries with which the college entered into MOU recently M/s. ECIL : CSE/ECE Training programmes for ECILSCIENTIST/Engineers M/s. CITD : Jointly offering Two PG programmes in Mech. Engg. CAD/CAM and Tool Design. M/s. NASSCOM : Faculty Training programme arranged in Associate with APSCHE and NASSCOM M/s. Wipro : Faculty Training programme and certification programme are organinsed for UCE and affiliated engineering colleges M/s. CTS/TCS/Infosys : Training of Soft skills and personality development is arranged for students Structure of the Governing board, recruitment and TOR of governors: (See section one) The University appoints the Governing Body. Other responsibilities/decision making areas of the Governing body? To hold, control and administer the property and funds of the college. 4

5 To administer all funds placed at the disposal of the college for specific purposes. To define the duties of staff of the College. To conduct examinations, and to approve and publish the results on behalf of the University. To delegate any of its powers to the Principal or to a Committee from among its own members or to any teaching staff member of the College. M.E. in Transportation Engg. (Civil) vi.) M.E. in Power Systems Engg. (EE) SECTION FOUR: Lesson for other institutions IRG generation is most important for sustaining benefits obtained under TEQIP. This can be done through user oriented self financing academic programmes and stepping up industrial consultancy activity. Institute has enjoyed interacting with the community giving them technological expertise. Now, we believe that it should be the responsibility of every engineering institute. Automation of project documentation to track, record and report the various activities under the project. This reduces the time considerably and improves the consistency and accuracy of the information/reports. 5
