1 University Of North Florida Jacksonville, Florida SPC 4064 Sec Public Speaking for Professional August 26 th to Dec 9th BLDG 14 Rm 1016 Instructor: Professor James Price Alternate Telephone: (904) Hours and Location: By Appointment or after class Class Meets: Tuesday 6:00 PM-8:45 PM Course Description/Objective: This class is designed to increase your understanding of the principles and skills necessary for appropriate and effective communication within contemporary organizations. The course primarily focuses on developing your skills in preparing and delivering presentations to organizational audiences. Additionally, the course introduces you to materials related to communication processes in organizations including communication flow, culture, verbal and nonverbal messages, listening, interpersonal skills, decision-making, interviewing, and small group communication. A significant amount of teaching in this course is done by you through the presentation, observation, and evaluation of in-class activities and performances. You will learn communication skills by doing. Some speeches will be videotaped to critique student s delivery, non-verbal messages and speaking style. Each of us has a role to fulfill with attached responsibilities. Mine is to facilitate the course and bring real world value to the topic. Yours is to learn as much as you can so that you can apply it. I will do my best to cover all the topics in the book. However, you are expected to read it and know where to find what you need in it. The major elements that make public speaking distinctive in communication are: speaker, listener, message, feedback, interference, cultural context, and channel. These elements work together to affect the messengers and their environment. They constitute the communication process. As a result, students enrolled in SPC 4064 will:

2 Listen with literal & critical comprehension Compose oral messages providing ideas & information suitable to topic, purpose & audience Transmit the message, using oral delivery skills suitable to audience & occasion, utilize presentation technology Speak using grammatically correct standard American English Convey effective delivery including the language areas of articulation, diction & vocabulary, as well as nonverbal aspects Learning Outcomes: The Department of Communication at UNF has adopted the North Florida Nine as a cohesive statement of learning objectives designed to match the professional values and competencies formulated by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). The complete list of the North Florida Nine can be seen on the department s web page: For this course, the following 7 learning goals will be addressed. 1. Communicate effectively: Communicate clearly and accurately through written, oral, and mediated forms appropriate to the study of communication and professional practice. 2. Think critically: Conduct reasoned evaluation of information to assess its relevance, accuracy, purpose, and meaning. 3. Apply theory: Apply appropriate theoretical concepts of communication in academic and professionally oriented work. 4. Conduct valid research: Apply research methods appropriate to the communication professions to address relevant communication problems. Such methods include quantitative and qualitative research applied in primary and secondary research. 5. Utilize appropriate technologies: Apply the tools and technologies of the communication professions in the creation and dissemination of messages appropriate for professional practice. 6. Embrace diversity: Demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of both domestic society and the peoples and cultures of global society and of the significance and impact of mass communications in society. 7. Practice ethically: Demonstrate an understanding of professional ethical principles and the relationship between ethics and law; apply ethical principles to communication professional practice.

Mottet Published by PEARSON Academic Dishonesty: Original work on your speeches and written assignments is expected. To present someone else's work and/or ideas as your own is an academic violation. Such an act will result in failure in the course and handled in accordance with the appropriate UNF board rules. Consultation or Meetings: Feel free to me or call for an appointment. I generally respond to daily. I will be happy to consult with you in preparation for major speeches. Do not wait until the last minute to try and contact me. I highly encourage postspeech conferences for improving your performance on future speeches after class. Pop Quizzes: We may have an UNCSCHEDULED Pop Quiz on any chapter test if students do not read material or participate in class discussions. These quizzes will be worth 10 points apiece. Students may use Pop Quiz points towards their lowest Speech/Assignment grade. Speech Preparation: An outline of your speech is required before presenting your speech. This will assist me in understanding if you have attained the information communicated to you before you present. This can save you embarrassment in front of your peers by not being prepared. I will give you a rubric on information that I will be assessing during your presentation. Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities who seek reasonable accommodations in the classroom or other aspects of performing their coursework must first register with the UNF Disability Resource Center (DRC) located in Building 57, Room DRC staff members work with students to obtain required documentation of disability and to identify appropriate accommodations as required by applicable disability laws including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). After receiving all necessary documentation, the DRC staff determines whether a student qualifies for services with the DRC and if so, the accommodations the student requires will be provided. DRC staff then prepares a letter for the student to provide faculty advising them of

4 approved accommodations. For further information, contact the DRC by phone (904) , or visit the DRC website Continuity of Instruction: In the event of disruption of normal classroom activities due to an emergency such as hurricane, pandemic or other unforeseen event or combination of events, the format of this course may be modified in order to enable completion of the course requirements. In that event, you will be provided an addendum to this syllabus that will supersede this version. It is your responsibility as a student participant to be proactive during any emergency to find instructions that I will post instructions and assignments to Blackboard, which you should check daily. Attendance: Attendance will have a huge bearing on your grade. I don t keep attendance records. When I give out information for an upcoming speech and you miss, it will REVEAL ITSELF during the speech. I m asking you to be present so you re aware of the material you will be ask to deliver upon the next class meeting. If you miss the next class period after you ve given a speech, you ll lose 10 points on the speech just given. It s not fair to student s who stayed to hear your speech. I know things come up and lives get busy (I UNDERSTAND) please let me know beforehand and I ll do my best to accommodate you, and not 30 minutes before class unless it s a MAJOR EMERGENCY. If you miss a class for any reason, it s up to you to get the information that was missed. Absents are not an excuse for missing assignments. Cell phones/i Pods: As a courtesy to others in your learning environment, please turn off your cell phones, I Pods etc. upon entering the classroom. If you are expecting an important call, please let me know before class. We simply want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to experience class without distraction. Put your phone away. Speeches and assignments will be evaluated on a 100 point grading scale. A Letter grade will be determined on the average score of all speeches and assignments together as listed below. All pop quizzes will be worth 10 points. You may use these points to add to any 1 speech or assignment. These points may not be staggered throughout different speeches or assignments. A % B 89-80% C 79-70% D 69-60% F 59-0% Assignment/Speeches being graded: 1) Eulogy Exercise 2) Informative Speech 3) Mid Term 4) Persuasion Paper

7 5) Persuasion Speech 6) Cover Letter Assignment 7) Final FN and I Grade Policy: FN Grade: This grade is failure for nonattendance. Students who fail to remain active in the course and who do not withdraw will receive the FN grade. Students who fail to remain active in the course after the withdrawal date will receive the FN grade. I Grade: The primary use of the I grade is to permit a student to complete academic work that s/he was unable to complete during an academic term, due to reasonable nonacademic grounds. While the issuance of the I grade is the decision of the course instructor, it is not encouraged. The course instructor is not obligated to issue and I grade. In order to be eligible for an I grade the student must be passing the course at the time of the request, and have completed a minimum of 75% of the course work.
