4 introduction Å We are pleased to present the Malaysia Salary Guide 2014/15. The salary ranges in this Guide are based on actual transactions between employers and employees of Kelly Services Malaysia and represent a reflection of the marketplace. 57 years after achieving independence, Malaysia has positively transformed itself into one of the most progressive emerging markets in Asia today. Powered by the Government s privatizations, liberalisation policies and most recently, the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), Malaysia offers great opportunities for local and international investors to tap growth within the country and across South East Asia (SEA). It is not surprising that Malaysia s economy expanded at a faster pace of 6.4% in the second quarter of 2014 (from April to June 2014) underpinned by strong growth in the services and manufacturing sectors exceeding forecasts of 5.8%. Going forward, the Malaysian economy is expected to remain on a steady growth path with Credit Suisse and Bank of America Merrill Lynch upgrading their 2014 GDP growth forecasts for Malaysia to 5.9% and 5.7%, respectively. Following this positive economic growth in the first half of 2014, employment prospects have improved with stronger labour demand in various sectors of the economy. However as Malaysia braces itself from an input-driven growth strategy to one which is increasingly driven by knowledge, the local talent required to advance the economic transformation agenda must possess skills and qualities to match industry requirements. I m also inclined to point out that while marketdriven salaries are crucial, it is only possible for employers to attract and retain talented employees by creating a meaningful employerof choice culture. I believe that whatever industry an organisation is in and however niche its products are, its employees continue to be its biggest asset and advantage. They are the ones that make the magic happen. And the key is in employee engagement, which is about learning how to retain, attract and develop good talent. With Malaysia s economy experiencing exponential growth, this prime market has no shortage of people to be employed, but only a shortage of specialised skills in the people. On this note, I am proud to present the Malaysia Salary Guide 2014/15 which offers a detailed and in-depth look at our business landscape, market insights and trends of key industries that are currently driving the nation s economy. In return, I hope that the Guide will serve as an additional tool for your talent compensation planning. My team and I are also readily available to assist you with specific queries you may have on our sectors of specialisations within Malaysia as you ll be able to see within this Guide. There are many aspects which make an employee productive; a competitive salary is one of them. I hope that this effort of ours provides you that crucial input. KAMAL KARANTH A. Managing Director Kelly Services Malaysia & India 4

6 ConTACT CENTRE: Salaries overview Contact Centre or previously more commonly known as Call Centre is a flourishing industry segment in Malaysia. Services rendered by contact centres are often engaged by corporations of various sizes from small-medium enterprises to large scale conglomerates including multinational corporations. A multitude of industries ranging from banking, insurance, manufacturing, automobiles, and telecommunication, to electrical, electronics, information technology, health care, and more are increasingly deploying contact centres capabilities within their businesses as market becomes competitive. Malaysia is an ideal contact centre location contributed by these factors: i. Stable economic, political and general environment ii. Strong supply of talent with Kuala Lumpur being the convergent point for graduates in Malaysia iii. Good infrastructure and development ensuring sustainability iv. Favourable business environment One of the biggest challenges facing the Contact Centre industry in Malaysia is the availability of a ready pool of talent who are able to communicate effectively in two in-demand languages English and Mandarin. While this is not yet at a peak, globalisation and new technologies will inevitably result in customers expecting oral competency in both these languages to be a pre-requisite for talent in the Contact Centre sector. In addition, oral skills in a few secondary foreign languages such as Korean, Japanese, Thai, and Urdu are also fast becoming a major plus. Currently, there is a mismatch between demand and supply in this area. 6

12 Corporate Professionals: Salaries Human resources function support logistics & warehousing sales & marketing 12
13 overview This year, the Malaysia Salary Guide 2014/15 combines the discipline of Human Resources (HR), Function Support, Logistics & Warehousing, and Sales & Marketing as Corporate Professionals. This categorisation reflects the nature of these professions which collectively support the businesses of companies from administration to day-to-day activities. This group is essential to Malaysia s service driven economy. When we speak of Corporate Professionals, there are two sub sectors which we cannot afford to ignore Human Resources and Sales and Marketing. There is an increasing demand from employers in Malaysia for HR professionals with a consultative background primarily for the implementation of strategic HR programs (as opposed to engaging a consulting firm to do so). The roles in demand within HR in the coming year are Talent Acquisition Managers; Compensation and Benefits Managers; and Head of Human Resources amongst others. Sales and Marketing, in the meantime, joins Information Technology (IT), Engineering, and Banking and Finance as sectors in which employers in Malaysia are most likely to pay to relocate their talents. Among the roles which will continue to be highly in-demand in Sales and Marketing are National Sales Managers and Digital Marketing Managers with both skill sets growing increasingly important as sales and technology become more integrated with our everyday lives. 13

21 overview The information technology sector has enjoyed tremendous growth in the last two decades in Malaysia starting from the mid-90s where national initiatives like the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) was launched. Today, the industry employs over 130,000 people and is regarded as among the larger sectors in the country. The initiative of MSC is under the purview and management of the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC). Both the public and private Institutions of Higher Learning (IHLs) in Malaysia have heeded the MSC agenda by establishing programmes and working relationships with technology giants such as IBM, Dell, Apple, Google, Hewlett Packard, and Huawei Technologies, just to name a few. Specific programmes are also drafted between relevant IHLs and various companies to nurture specialised talent. On market trends, MSC Malaysia s Talent Supply-Demand Study report cites that 90 percent of companies hired Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) talents with at least one to five years of experience, with only 10 percent of companies hiring fresh graduates. The study was conducted with more than 1,000 companies and 133 faculties in IHLs, in addition to secondary research and consultation with industry experts. Current skill gaps highlighted by the study saw software development (42 percent) skills topping the list followed by database (23 percent) and networking and security (18 percent). Additionally, the creative and animation industry too is one where Malaysia has grown exponentially over the past few years with many of our locally developed animated programmers showing all over the world, from China and Indonesia to UK and the Middle East. 21

25 overview In terms of new entrants to the employment market, there have been no less than 13,000 engineering graduates from Malaysia s public universities between 2008 and Malaysia s public universities graduates from the field of engineering are increasingly in hot demand by leading engineering companies like Strand Aerospace and Linde. This healthy pattern is perhaps attributed to the global rankings of the said universities. For instance, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is ranked an outstanding 38th placing for chemical engineering worldwide while Universiti Malaya (UM) is ranked in the top 100 in the fields of chemical, and electrical and electronics engineering. Doing its part is also the Public Service Department (PSD) which awards 40 percent of its scholarships to engineering students enabling them to further their studies at renowned institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge and University of Melbourne. All encompassing, this succinctly elevates the engineering standards as practiced and demanded by the growing ambitions of Malaysia. Conclusively, the field of engineering is anticipated to positively expand with the ongoing Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP). These are in addition to the High Income Talent Research Scientist Engineer (HIT-RSE) managed by the Selangor Human Resource Development Centre (SHRDC), and the Technology Specialist in Specific Domain Expertise (TeSSDE) which is sponsored by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) and owned by Might-Meteor Advanced Manufacturing. In Engineering, talents such as mechanical engineers, process engineers, civil engineers, and health, safety and environment managers are much sought after in Malaysia. 25
