13 TEMPUS IV ( ) Tempus (The Trans-European mobility scheme for university studies) supports the modernisation of higher education and creates an area of co-operation in countries surrounding the EU. Established in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the scheme now covers 28 countries in the Western Balkans, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. Project types: Joint Projects and Structural Projects Grant size: From 500,000 to 1,500,000 Minimum grant size for countries with annual budgets below 1 million: 300,000 (Albania, Montenegro, Central Asia) Project duration: up to 36 months Next call for proposals: December 2008 (deadline: April/May 2009) Internet: 13

15 ERASMUS Mundus External Cooperation Window (EM ECW) Objectives: to promote mobility for students and academic staff worldwide to enhance international cooperation between higher education institutions to pave the way to the international recognition of studies and qualifications to enhance the role of the higher education sector by exchanging knowledge, skills and expertise The programme will contribute to financing partnerships projects of European and Third-Country higher education institutions with a grant which will cover the cost of the following activities: - The partnership activities for the organisation of mobility and the transfer of know-how and best practices - The implementation of individual mobility for students (undergraduate, Master, Doctorate, Post-graduate) and academic staff for the purpose of studying, teaching, training and research abroad Project types: Mobility projects Budget 2009: approx. 130 mio Grant size: 1,000-2,500 Call for proposal: End of
16 ERASMUS Mundus External Cooperation Window (EM ECW) Geographical coverage Group A Central and Eastern Europe and Russia Middle East Region Central Asia Group B African Caribbean and Pacific Group of States Western Balkans region Asia region: Asia Regional and India Latin America region: Brazil, Chile and Mexico The EM ECW is managed by the Education Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency. 17 Individual Scholarships offered by DAAD The DAAD runs over 200 scholarship programmes. They range from short-term research (1-6 months) and teaching exchanges through to long-lasting doctoral scholarships for (post)graduates (6-12 months).
