2 Willkommen! Welcome! The University The Berlin School of Economics cordially invites international students to our International Summer School program. We look forward to receiving again a large number of students from different countries of the world that will constitute a multicultural student body. In 2009, the offers three academic courses that focus on business and economics from a European perspective, as well as two German language courses at the beginners level. All courses are complemented by an extensive optional culture and leisure time program and will provide plenty of possibilities to discover Berlin and to gain firsthand experience of the city s rich cultural life. The is run by the Berlin School of Economics, a university of applied science, which is one of the largest academic institutions for business and management studies in Germany. 15 undergraduate degree and 6 postgraduate degree programmes, many of them in English, are on offer. Students profit from the knowledge and management experience of its 130 full-time professors that all hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorates. As a specialized university for business and economics it calls for a study concept that guarantees strong links to business and professional life. Participants of our summer courses will benefit from the historical and cultural opportunities of Berlin as a truly unique European metropolis, a place of dynamic change. You earn credits while gaining valuable educational and cultural experiences. What s more, summer programmes generally promote cross-cultural understanding. By learning more about others, you will also learn more about yourself. You can become a member of an international community and extend your networks for your later career.

3 The Programme I. Business Courses The business programmes are a unique blend of business, politics, language and culture, offering business and economics students the chance to undertake a demanding, in-depth study of Germany and the European Union in English. Students will spend three to four weeks of multidisciplinary study areas such as business, environmental studies, economics, social science, cross cultural management and marketing. Markets and Management in Europe (M+M) Our classic. The course offers three intensive weeks on cross cultural management, economics of the EU, as well as marketing for the automotive industry. M+M has been chosen Excellent Summer Academy 2007 by DAAD. June 28 July 18, 2009 Language & Culture A German language course module for beginners is integrated into the business programme, teaching students essential skills to communicate on a daily basis. Requirements Advanced undergraduate business and economic majors or graduates with good standing. Proof of English proficiency (e.g. TOEFL 550/213/80 or equivalent) is required for all non-native speakers. European Business and Economics Programme (EBEP) The EBEP course has been developed out of the M+Mcourse, offering the same three modules on cross cultural management, economics and marketing, but on top offering a fascinating insight into the philosophies underlying the EU ( Values and Politics ). The fourth week allows students to gain extra credits. June 21 July 18, 2009 The European Union in a Global World (EUGW) This course sheds a light on the EU as a dynamic player, on global challenges for EU firms, on implications of the environment for EU businesses and governments as well as on human costs of global markets from a European perspective. EUGW received the DAAD quality seal for 2008 and June 21 July 18, 2009 Practical Approach Study visits to companies and (political) institutions once a week enable students to combine theory and practice. Berlin, as a venue for significant political and economic developments in Germany and Europe, provides the ideal location for this approach. Visits lead to major companies such as Volkswagen and Daimler, and to institutions such as the German Parliament and the Representation of the European Union. 4 II. Language Courses Important Information Optional Culture and Leisure Time Programme Participants can look forward to an exciting culture and leisure time programme. The Summer School team will organize about two cultural or social events per week for all participants, among them a sightseeing tour by boat, several visits to museums, a typical Berlin beer garden, open air cinema, farewell party. Excursions will lead e.g. to Potsdam, to the Charlottenburg Palace, and to the Memorial Sachsenhausen. Learn the Language, Understand the Culture, Experience Berlin! The language courses combine intensive language classes with a taste of culture and history of Berlin and Germany. Both courses cover general language skills, core grammatical structures, basic vocabulary, and knowledge about German culture and living. A special focus will be on communication. A concert or opera performance is one of the highlights. 1. Beginners Course: This course is aimed at students with no knowledge of German. 2. Advanced Beginners: This course is designed for students with basic knowledge of German (about 1 2 semesters of intensive German). Open to anyone interested in German language and culture. Fees All fees are package prices and include application and tuition fees, health, accident and liability insurance, accommodation with breakfast, certificate and transcript of records, service and support as well as most parts of the optional culture and leisure time programme.
