10 10 The Birmingham MBA Overseas MBA programmes The Birmingham MBA in Singapore Overview We are proud to have been running this programme continuously in Singapore for eighteen years. We use fundamentally the same syllabus as the corresponding Birmingham programme and the same team of University of Birmingham academic staff. We are also aware of the need for some customisation and use more Asian cases and institutional material than in the home programme. Programme Content Five modules are compulsory and you choose three electives (these are currently under review). More are available, of course, if you wish to study part of your programme in the UK and you will find the full list of electives listed on the UK Executive course page. The modules are taught over a ten-day period, two weekends and six evenings, to enable study to be combined with work commitments. Modules are designed to ensure that you are exposed to both the operational and the strategic aspects of management disciplines through the use of innovative and creative teaching methods. These include action learning / research, formal and live case studies and computer simulation to complement conventional lectures and seminars. Up to eight hours of videoconferencing are scheduled between the teaching blocks to enable you to contact staff live and the Virtual Learning Environment is available for off-line communication. A feature of the programme is the possible interaction between the coursework and your workplace. We can and do tailor assignments to be relevant to you and your employer. The intensive modules are given five times each year and run in pairs. One of the pair is always suitable for new students, so there are five possible entry points in a year. 12 12 The Birmingham MBA

13 The Birmingham MBA 13 What are the MBA 24 and 21 month routes? What is the MBA 24 month programme? This programme consists of the first year on the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (GDBA), followed by the second year on either the MBA International Business 12 month pathway, or the MBA Global Banking and Finance 12 month pathway (depending upon your eligibility). As a student on this programme you are required to pass all twelve modules of the GDBA with an average score of 60% to progress onto the appropriate MBA 12 month pathway. What is the MBA 21 month programme? For appropriately qualified students (good Finance/Economics background) there is the option to join the GDBA programme in its second semester, which starts in January. As a student on this programme you are required to pass all six modules in the second semester of the GDBA with an average score of 60% to progress onto the appropriate MBA 12 month pathway. What is the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (GDBA)? You can find out all about this programme by visiting the course page in this brochure, or on our website: As a student on the MBA 24 or 21 month programme, what do I need to do in order to progress onto the MBA in the second year? As a student on these programmes you are required to pass all modules of the GDBA with an average score of 60% to progress onto the appropriate MBA 12 month pathway. As a registered student on the MBA 24 or 21 month programmes, you are not separately certificated for your GDBA, and the marks you achieve on the GDBA do not count towards your MBA. What are the advantages of the 24/21 month programme? The entry criteria for the MBA 24 and 21 month programmes are slightly lower than those for the MBA 12 month programmes, so should you not meet the MBA 12 month requirement, you are welcome to consider this option as an alternative which offers you an additional year to prepare for MBA study If English is not your first language, the MBA 24 and 21 month programmes provide you with an additional year (the GDBA year) to develop your spoken and written English skills Should you be unfamiliar with the British higher education system, or have been out of education for some time, the MBA 24 and 21 month programmes offer you more time to acclimatise to an academic environment If you have the financial support to bring your family to the UK from overseas, the MBA 24 and 21 month programmes may be more suitable in allowing you and your family more time to settle Although your performance on the GDBA does not ultimately contribute to your MBA grade, the first year of the MBA 24 and 21 month programmes gives you the opportunity to develop academic abilities in many of the areas which will be covered in greater depth on the MBA Due to the structure of the MBA 24 and 21 month programmes, you would complete the first year by June, which would allow you the opportunity to apply for an internship with a UK-based company prior to the start of the second year (September). Should you wish to take advantage of such an opportunity, our Careers Service will be happy to support you

14 14 The Birmingham MBA Projects Our full time MBA programme is focused on strategic international business. As such there are four distinctive and challenging enterprise projects working closely with businesses in the UK and worldwide. This includes our International Business Experience module and The International Management Challenge. Our approach on the programme is to constantly apply theory to practice in order to develop your career as an international business leader. Each project is designed around the consultancy process and requires you to respond to a real company s brief to provide meaningful and insightful recommendations. Projects are designed to help you develop more independently whilst responding to increasingly complex demands. This culminates in the Management Challenge which requires you to work as the sole consultant on a company-based project with one of our external partners. Consultancy Training At Birmingham we provide you with consultancy training from our partners Deloitte ensuring that you are well prepared for the Management Challenge. The training provided by this leading consultancy and professional services firm will also give you the professional skills and insights required when moving back into the job market. The four major projects integral to the Birmingham MBA programme provide our full time MBA students with four distinct opportunities to gain practical experience whilst studying towards the MBA qualification. Project 1 Incubator Project The first project, the Incubator project is compulsory and is embedded within the Developing Leadership Practice module. Here students work in consultancy teams to support a start-up business based in our incubator space. Work is focused on a specified brief and student teams have the full support of academics as facilitators and mentors. Project 2 International Strategy This is a compulsory project which sits within the Global Business Development module. The same consultancy team methodology is used as in Project 1, but with this project students are set an internationalisation objective by two companies. Project 3 Global Mindset The International Business Experience is an elective module in semester two. It allows students the opportunity to undertake a group based consultancy project in another country. Currently, this runs with our partners in the Central European University in Hungary. Project 4 The Management Challenge At this point in the learning journey, students will have had a lot of practice at undertaking live company consultancy projects and will have completed the Deloitte Consultancy Training programme. This final optional challenge allows students to tackle an individual consultancy project with a company based either in the UK or overseas.

Employer engagement Whilst on your MBA you will have the opportunity to engage with top international companies. This year our MBA students participated in a range of activities with employers including BP, GE, IBM, Unilever, Deloitte and HSBC. Your employment activity schedule Examples of group activities Examples of individual activities Examples of anticipated outcomes Introduction to Careers and online profile briefing Careers in Investment Banking presentation Careers in Consultancy networking event Distinguished leaders alumni seminar series Job seeking strategies workshop Employer presentations Live job search session Interview skills workshop Mock Assessment Centre All of our MBA students have the opportunity to attend an interactive Mock Assessment Centre. The day includes a range of exercises which are designed to reflect those typically used by employers in assessment centres such as case studies, group exercises and interviews. As well as developing their presentation, communication and interview skills, students also receive peer and tutor feedback on their performance and have the chance to network with employers. We are fortunate to have long-standing relationships with a number of companies who support this event including Capgemini, Unilever, Royal Mail, IBM and Deloitte. The Mock Assessment Centre provides an excellent experience for the students. The exercises that they go through are exactly in line with the approach that Unilever takes so it provides a realistic and challenging environment for students to hone their skills. The calibre of the students is always high at Birmingham, and it is a pleasure for Unilever to be able to support this event. Joe Comiskey, ecommerce Innovation and Strategy Manager at Unilever Discuss career and company aspirations Draft and publish MBA profile During the first semester, you will have the opportunity to produce and publish an online profile which can be viewed by employers and other recruitment professionals. Advice on networking Job application support Video recorded interview practice Progress reviews There is an extremely supportive and positive environment for postgraduate students at the Business School; the careers service offered much welcomed advice and the academics, as well as the administration team, were ready to help me achieve my goals. I had a strong interest in banking and wanted to move into the banking sector, I was able to work alongside academics specialising in this field, which was a wonderful opportunity for me. Andrew Dale, Director HSBC (MBA Global Banking and Finance 2010) Met with a careers coach to clarify your career aspirations and employers of choice Talked informally with alumni and potential employers Completed an MBA profile for online publication Developed your CV and LinkedIn profile Attended a range of career workshops Formed Sector Interests Groups We encourage our MBA students to form student-led Sector Interest Groups. 19 The Birmingham MBA 19 The Business School s Advisory Board One of the real strengths of Birmingham Business School is its outstanding Advisory Board, noted by the Financial Times for its gender diversity and international reach. Our Advisory Board s purpose is to: Advise on Birmingham Business School s strategic objectives Seek to enhance the Business School s links with the corporate world The Board is chaired by Lord Digby Jones of Birmingham Kt, and consists of high-level executives of exceptional stature from around the globe. Members range from international chief executives such as Andrew Lezala CEO of Metro Rail Melbourne, senior vice presidents of multi-national firms such as Kate Lovett Vice President of BP Shipping, renowned entrepreneurs such as Lord Karan Bilimoria Chairman and Founder of the Cobra Beer Partnership, and policy makers such as Gisela Stuart MP, Supriya Banerji Deputy Director General of the Confederation of Indian Industry, and Anji Hunter former Director of Government Relations. This cross-section of influential business experts allows the Business School to remain at the cutting edge of what businesses are looking for both in terms of our taught output and research. The Board opens doors to a range of companies and networks for the Business School and its members often support students individually in their research projects, company placements and professional development. A meeting of the Advisory Board Members under the spotlight Jane Lodge and Marc Stone are two board members and alumni of the University of Birmingham, who have worked collaboratively to support and enhance the student experience on the MBA programme. Jane Lodge Non Executive Director Costain Group plc, DCC plc and Devro plc Jane brings an almost unprecedented wealth of experience at the very highest level having been a partner in Deloitte from 1986 to 2011, where she led teams auditing major global businesses such as Jaguar Land Rover. She now has a portfolio of non-executive directorships and chairs their Audit Committees. I have been fortunate to have a number of leadership roles throughout my career. I was partner in charge of the Deloitte s Midlands audit practice, partner in charge of UK Audit Learning in Deloitte, Deloitte s Practice Senior Partner for the Midlands, and Deloitte s UK Manufacturing Industry leader, overseeing the strategy of how the business went to market with the industry. I was also the first woman on the Board of Partners. I appreciate the confidence others showed in me and this is what drives me to help others achieve their potential. That is why I enjoy working with the MBA students at Birmingham. Over the last three years I ve had the privilege of running the Birmingham MBA Deloitte Consultancy Challenge, a week-long training programme designed to enhance the skills of MBA students looking to develop their skills in consultancy. I particularly enjoy the interaction between the students who all bring their own professional experience to the discussion. Marc Stone Director Stone Consulting Ltd Marc, by trade, has enjoyed a distinguished career as Finance and Programmes Director within a wide range of global blue chip firms across a number of sectors before setting up Stone Consulting, where he works with clients to deliver acquisitions, transformational business change and turnaround initiatives. I remember how it was to be a graduate at the Business School with only a vague idea of what I wanted to do and a mere inkling of how to achieve it. At the forefront of my mind, however, I was always passionate about inspiring people and instilling belief in them that anything can be achieved, and having enthused teams to move heaven and earth during my career I now work with businesses to prove that they can. If only I knew then, what I know now is my mantra with students and is the reason why I now engage with the University on a professional level to help develop students potential. It goes far beyond text books and models. Be it coaching students in consultancy during their company projects, conversations around the water cooler, mentoring, or helping them with their networks, I get great satisfaction in helping students unlock their leadership potential and taking that step up in developing themselves individually as future leaders and executives.

20 20 The Birmingham MBA Alumni and Distinguished Leaders MBA students have the opportunity to gain an insight into how high profile business leaders made it to the top and discover what makes a great leader through our Distinguished Leaders Series. The series has been a great success, with students finding speakers such as David Gill who was Chief Executive of Manchester United at the time of his visit and Mike Coupe, Commercial Director of Sainsbury s, invaluable and inspiring. Outstanding students also have the opportunity to be part of a more intimate round-table discussion with the distinguished leaders, to ask individual questions and explore their career and the theme of leadership in more detail. The Distinguished Leaders speaker series was fantastic. It was a great opportunity to hear from senior business executives about their journey, the dilemmas they face in their roles as leaders and their views on how we, as MBA students, can develop our careers. Khilna Morjaria MBA International Business, 2013 Alumni The Birmingham Business School Alumni Team are dedicated to providing an outstanding Alumni Relations function for the MBA Programme. The team deliver bespoke events, tailored communications and a variety of volunteer opportunities, which encourage graduates from across the University to directly support our MBA student s experience, career progression and the programmes curriculum development. Our Alumni Ambassadors Scheme enables you to connect directly with our dynamic graduates all over the world who have first-hand Alumni Ambassador profile 2013 I was awarded the African MBA Scholarship Award from the Business School and it came at the right time in my life given that it not only bridged a financial gap into achieving a long time dream of pursuing a higher learning, but also exposed me to an excellent university where international experience is a day to day learning. The Birmingham MBA Global Banking and Finance programme has enhanced my understanding of global finance and the macro perspective of how to understand and respond to the challenges facing the finance industry today. The international experience and learning environment enhanced my confidence, the programme also moulded me into a confident leader and an effective Manager. I am given great respect within my company, from my colleagues and also from my family and the wider community. I have become a role model for aspiring girls and women in Malawi which is a real honour. experience of all that the Business School, University and the city of Birmingham have to offer. The opportunities on offer include: the inspiring MBA Distinguished Leaders Series Student mentoring with alumni business leaders Developing and supporting students to become MBA Alumni Ambassadors Facilitating expert alumni speakers to provide students with real-world projects, advice and career opportunities I had a fantastic time at Birmingham Business School. I really enjoyed the visits from Alumni and other leaders from the finance sector. They were very interesting and inspiring. Also, the team building trip to Coniston Water really boosted my confidence and allowed me to make some great friends. I found the MBA course structure suited my career map and aided my progression in the financial industry. Maureen Kawngwanya Birmingham MBA Global Banking and Finance
