1 Engineering by the Numbers By Brian L. Yoder, Ph.D. Bachelor s Degrees and Enrollment Engineering bachelor s degrees grew by 6 percent during the past year, reaching a total of 99,173 for 214. This continues a decade-long increase in bachelor s degrees, which have climbed 26 percent since 25. With enrollment up by almost 8 percent between 212 and 213, growth in degrees is expected to continue. Within college populations, freshmen showed only a 1 percent increase over last year and sophomores a 3 percent gain; while juniors and seniors showed an 8 percent and a 6 percent gain, respectively. One possible conclusion when considering the overall 6 percent growth in enrolment and the larger increases in juniors and seniors is that the overall increase in enrollment is due to students transferring into engineering and not from students entering engineering programs as freshmen. Most engineering disciplines saw gains between 3 percent and 6 percent. The disciplines of Computer Science (Inside Engineering) and Management Engineering saw the largest gains among disciplines with an increase over last year of 12 percent. The disciplines of Mining Engineering and Nuclear Engineering saw the largest decreases among disciplines of negative 1.6 percent and negative 9.3 percent, respectively. Master s Degrees and Enrollment Master s increased 4 percent in 214, compared with the previous year, and reached an all-time high of 51,69, representing a 22 percent increase since 25. However, as with bachelor s degrees, Fall 214 master s total enrollment (FT + PT) jumped 8 percent above the previous year to 122,699. Master s enrollment gains are attributed to an increase in the full-time student population, which swelled by 11 percent over 213, similar to the 12 percent increase seen last year. Much of the increase came from a jump in students studying Computer Science and Electrical/Computer Engineering. Computer Science (inside engineering) which saw a 17 percent increase in enrolment of full-time Master s degree students over last year and Electrical/Computer Engineering saw a 12 percent increase. Doctoral Degrees and Enrollment Doctoral degrees increased by 5 percent over 213, reaching a new high. The 214 mark of 11,39 represents a 35 percent increase in engineering doctorates since 25. Doctorates should level off and could decline in the future since enrollment decreased by 4 percent between 213 and 214, and has decreased by 5 percent since 21. Engineering Students from Other Countries Nonresident aliens increased their share of engineering bachelor s degrees for the fifth consecutive year, reaching 8.5 percent in 214. After a decline in the percentage of nonresident aliens receiving a degree at the master s level in 212, their share of degrees grew in 214 to 47.4 percent. The percentage of nonresident aliens receiving a degree at the doctoral level decreased slightly from 213 to 54.8 this year. Female Engineering Students Women received a higher percentage of engineering bachelor s degrees again, for the sixth straight year, climbing from 17.8 percent in 29 to 19.9 percent in 214. Based on enrollment trends, we expect to see the percentage of women receiving an engineering bachelor s degree to increase slightly over the next few years. The percentage of female engineering master s degrees also rose in 213, with 24.2 percent of all master s degrees going to women. While an all-time high, this represents just a two-and-a-half-percentage-point increase over 25, and continues a stable trend of the last 1 years. Women took 22.2 percent of doctoral degrees, a slight decrease from 213, but in the decade since 25 have seen their share grow by almost 5 percent. Based on enrollment trends, we can expect the percentage of doctoral degrees awarded to females to remain about the same over the next few years. Faculty Women comprised 15.2 percent of tenured and tenuretrack faculty as of fall 213, continuing a slow increase since 21, when they represented 8.9 percent. The percentage of women who are full professors increased from 9.4 percent in 213 to 1.2 percent in 214. Female associate professors increased from 17. percent in 213 to 18. percent in 214, but women who are assistant professors remained the same at The percentage of African American tenured and tenure-track faculty decreased slightly from 2.6 percent in 213 to 2.5 percent in 214. Asian tenured and tenure-track faculty increased from 25.2 percent to 25.6 percent, while Hispanic tenured and tenure-track faculty increased from 3.6 percent to 3.9 percent. American Indian and Hawaiian/ Pacific Islanders, tenured and tenured track, fluctuated by a just few faculty members. More detailed data for 358 U.S. and 9 Canadian engineering colleges can be found in the following pages of the 214 Profiles of Engineering and Engineering Technology Colleges or online at Brian Yoder is director of assessment, evaluation, and institutional research at the American Society for Engineering Education. 37 By the Numbers Canadian Engineering Data, Forty-three Canadian institutions are currently accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. Nine of those institutions participated in the 214 ASEE Survey of Engineering Colleges. The data submitted by these institutions display similar trends as those seen at U.S. institutions. The representation of women is almost identical at the bachelor s and master s level in both countries, while faculty trends for women are also very close.
