1 PROSPECTUS Associate Degree in Education (ADE) leading to 4 year B.Ed. (Hons) Elementary) Directorate of Curriculum Research and Development (DCRD) Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Muzafarabad Introduction of DCRD Directorate of Curriculum Research and Development (DCRD) Azad Jammu & Kashmir is the key institution in AJ&K dealing with teacher education in AJ&K. It has been playing a key role in Elementary and Secondary education. Main responsibilities of DCRD include a) Pre service and in-service teacher education, b) Student performance assessment, c) Regulatory and monitory body of textbooks in the Azad Govt. of State of Jammu and Kashmir. DCRD serves as the advisory body to the Education Department of AJ&K relating on matters relating to scheme of studies and manages 10 Elementary Colleges 5 male and 5 Female. These colleges in Azad Jammu and Kashmir serve the needs for Pre-Service teacher education. Regarding in-service teacher education Directorate of Education Extension (DEE) is working under the umbrella of DCRD. To conduct assessment studies on student learning achievements and to build capacity of working teachers in the field of assessment DCRD has established Kashmir Education Assessment Center (KEACE) with the assistance and collaboration of National Education Assessment System (NEAS). Another key role of DCRD is developing the text books from class I-VIII for AJ&K schools. In this regard many titles of text books have been developed so for. In order to improve the quality of pre-service teacher education in AJ&K, DCRD with the support of Government of AJ&K is offering a new teacher education degree program from This new degree will be called Associate Degree in Education (ADE). Introduction ADE The Associate Degree in Education (ADE) Program is a 2 year Pre-Service Teacher Education degree program linked to the HEC approved four year B.Ed. (Hons) Elementary degree. During 2011 ADE will be offered in 6 Elementary Colleges working under the supervision of DCRD. The minimum qualification to take admission in ADE program will be HSSC (F.A/FSC or equivalent). The ADE will be equivalent to BA and degree will be awarded by the affiliated university which is University of AJK in the case of AJ&K 6 selected colleges. After completing ADE students will have following options: Option A: eligible for teaching in schools at elementary level Option B: or continue education at University of AJK with two more years to obtain a B.Ed. (Hons.) Elementary degree. Option C: or continue education by getting admission in Masters level degree in any university of Pakistan/ AJK

2 ADE and Affiliation of GCETs During 2011 ADE will be offered in 6 GCETs: 1) Government College for Elementary Teachers (GCET) Male Muzafarabad. 2) Government College for Elementary Teachers (GCET) Female Muzafarabad. 3) Government College for Elementary Teachers (GCET) Male Rawlakot 4) Government College for Elementary Teachers (GCET) Female Rawlakot 5) Government College for Elementary Teachers (GCET) Male MirPur 6) Government College for Elementary Teachers (GCET) Female MirPur These GCETs will be affiliated with University of AJ&K and the degree will be awarded by the University. Scholarships: USAID Pre-STEP funded 100 scholarships will be available for outstanding students. The students shall be entitled for a reasonable amount of scholarship based on merit and need for two years of ADE course. The continuity of the scholarship will be conditional to the satisfactory performance of the students which will be assessed on quarterly basis. Scheme of Studies Semester System will be observed in the ADE program. There will be four semesters of six months in two years program.
