1 Introduction ISONAS Crystal Matrix Advanced Networking Checklist Because of the simple network topology used for most ISONAS installations, the only network configuration typically required is to set the IP Address on the ISONAS reader-controller. But installations that use more advanced networks require some additional configuration and potentially some troubleshooting techniques. This checklist lists some steps to take when dealing with more advanced networks. Upgrade Checklist Complete 1. Determine the desired Network Settings for the Reader-Controller. These setting are dependent on the configuration of the network subnet that the Reader-Controller is being connected to. Static IP Address:... Subnet Mask:... 2 2. Determine what IP-Port will be used by the Reader-Controller. For most installations, the default IP-Port of will be use. Do not use an IP-port value of Zero (0) IP Port Used: 3. Set the Reader-Controller s IP Address, using the tool Plug&Play. Using the tool, Plug&Play, connect to the reader-controller, and review, and if required, update the following: IP Port Subnet mask Default Gateway Note: The Subnet Mask and Gateway are required if the host and reader-controller are connected to different subnets. Note: Often you may pre-configure the reader-controllers, by connecting the reader-controller to your laptop, using a cross-over cable. With a cross-over cable, Plug&Play can Find a reader and update it s IP Address even if your laptop s is not configured to be on the same subnet. But the Plug&Play s Connect feature will only work if the laptop is configured to be on the same logical subnet as the reader s subnet. So, in this case, you will need to modify your laptop s IP Address and Subnet Mask to be on the readercontroller s logical subnet. 3 P a g e I S O N A S Netw o r k Tr o u b l e s h o o ti n g C h e cklist

4 5. The reader-controller s Ethernet network connection needs to be set to: 10 Mbps One-half Duplex. Some types of network switches require that the network switch s ports be manually set to this configuration. 6. Verify that the network does not block the IP Port used by the readercontroller (Recorded in step 2 above). 7. Plug&Play uses the technique UDP Broadcast Messages when it Finds reader-controllers, and when it changes the reader-controller s IP Address. If you are having problems using Plug&Play s Find feature, check the following: a. Assure that the computer running Plug&Play is connected to the same physical subnet as the reader-controller (meaning that there is not a gateway or router between the computer and the reader-controller). b. Assure that the subnet does not block UDP broadcast messages. 8. When Plug&Play is reviewing and changing items besides the IP Address, it connects to the Reader-controlling using TCP/IP sockets, and a special IP Port. Verify the network does not block the IP Port For RC-02 (and later) reader-controllers, this port requires a password for any changes to be applied. 4 P a g e I S O N A S Netw o r k Tr o u b l e s h o o ti n g C h e cklist

5 9. Use the Ping command to check connectivity between the host running the Crystal Matrix software and the reader-controller Review the Ping command s response times. If greater than 200ms, then the Crystal Matrix s Resp Wait time may need to be adjusted. This may be set using the Crystal Administration Application: Main Menu Doors Program Doors Host Mode: Note: Ping uses a type of network message called icmp echo request, and some networks are configured to disable these types of messages. 10. Use the Tracert command to map the network topology between the host running the Crystal Matrix software and the reader-controller Run the Tracert in both directions. Once from both the Host subnet to the reader-controller s subnet, and from the reader-controller s subnet to the Host s subnet. Verify that the Tracert results match the expected network topology.
