4 Introduction Overview Since 1872, Aberystwyth University has promoted academic excellence in research and teaching. At the same time, we have developed into a multifaceted institution that serves a broad range of constituencies. The establishment of Aberystwyth University as an independent institution has provided a valuable opportunity to clarify and articulate our core values. Our new graphic identity provides an aesthetic platform for our institutional identity. This reflects our existing style but gives stronger emphasis to our Shield of Arms with brighter colours and a modern shape. Staff, students, prospective students, friends and associates of the University were consulted and gave valuable input in the formulation of the new identity. The original Crest is retained for use on ceremonial occasions such as graduation. To communicate a unified visual image we ask the entire University community to adhere to the standards outlined in the Identity Manual. The Manual explains the use of the graphic identity in all University communications and functions. By applying it consistently in all our messages we will reinforce and strengthen our image. Brand Values: Environments Matter A brand is far more than a logo. There are a number of core values which underpin our brand that need to be promoted through a wide range of media. We are aware that members of staff and students often have to represent the University in explaining their work to the press, to colleagues elsewhere, to school teachers, or even informally with family and friends via social networks. The following themes represent some of the environments which contribute to making Aberystwyth University such a special place. Environments matter can be used as a tool-kit for you to choose the environment that matters to you when you are promoting your department and University. 7 The Visual Policy The University Logo The logo has been registered for trade protection in the UK and internationally and has been registered as an official trademark. The University logo consists of the shield taken from the University Crest, and the text Prifysgol Aberystwyth University. The relationship between these elements has been specially drawn and the spaces between them are fixed. The logo should not be altered or amended in any way nor should the elements be separated and used independently of one another. The extent of the identity The identity encompases every centre, department, school and institute in Aberystwyth University. The new logo should be used whenever a graphic interpretation of the title Aberystwyth University is required. The logo should only be used for official businesses as defined in the University s Charter and Statutes. Individuals who are uncertain of whether the use of the logo is appropriate or not should consult with the Marketing Manager. Please note the original crest is retained for ceremonial use. The University Crest The crest was awarded to Aberystwyth University in The crest is primarily used on ceremonial occasions. As with all heraldic images there are several meanings interlinked in this crest. The main features are: Two red dragons which symbolise the optimism of Victorian north and south Wales An Open Book symbolising the world of learning Eagle or Phoenix rising open-winged above a flaming tower symbolising, perhaps, the rebirth of the College after the fire of 1885 The legend Nid Byd, Byd Heb Wybodaeth A World Without Knowledge, is No World. In special circumstances the crest can be used as an individual device (for example as a watermark for certificates). However, the University logo must still appear on the material as recommended. Authorisation to use the crest independently must be sought from Dr Russell Davies, Marketing Manager. 5
8 The Visual Policy Using the Logo It is essential that a consistent use of colour and positioning is maintained throughout all areas of logo application such as stationery, documents, publications, signage and livery. The logo is available in black and white and colour versions and must be reproduced from printer-ready artwork and not from photocopied or pre-printed material or be redrawn in any way. Relative scaling of the logo to increase or decrease the size is permissible down to but not below, the set minimum width of 25mm. Manipulation of the logo in a manner which would cause distortion is not allowed. Full colour Full Colour Negative A web safe version of the logo is available to download from: Further advice can be obtained from the Design Services. Language and the identity The brand identity of the institution in all its manifestations, will be bilingual. The name of the institution will appear bilingually wherever it is shown, whether on signs, vehicles, buildings, in exhibitions, advertisements and printed announcements, letterheads, complimentary cards, identification badges, or in electronic form. In all cases Welsh will come first or uppermost. Mono Mono Negative Colour Palette Brand Identity Colour Palette for printing, exhibition vinyl and computer screens. 9 The Visual Policy Exclusion Zone The logo is protected by an exclusion zone. No element should interfere with this area. Minimum Size The University logo should never appear below its minimum size which is 25mm wide. 25mm Typical Exclusion Zone Positioning Guide When printing the logo on letterheads, its position is based on 2 x-heights from the top left hand corner of the document (x-height being the measurement of the H ). The logo s size is set at 57mm wide for placing on an A4 page size, this equates as 27% of the sheet width. Logo Restrictions The logo must always be used in its orignal format, no tampering of any kind is allowed. Variations, such as the examples shown below, are NOT permitted: x-height 2 x-heights 2 x-heights 27% of sheet width When the logo is being used on literature, e.g. A4 Newsletters, then it is required to be 64mm wide and positioned 11.6mm from the left and 6.6mm from the top. When outputting a logo through a laser printer or other digital output device, it is necessary to consider the printer s normal image parameters. The logo should therefore be positioned using the guidelines above, to ensure correct positioning within the visible printed area. 7
10 Stationery In August 2013 the new institutes were established. The institutes conform to the overall University identity but are allowed to express their own identity in some instances of stationery, signage and promotional materials. However, in each case precedence is given to the University s identity. When this is the case, the logo should be used independently in the best possible position but observing the rules on minimum size (Section 1). By now almost everyone adheres to democratic ideals. However, what exactly does democracy mean, and how are democratic ideas put into practice? This section aims to introduce the student to different discussions about the nature of democracy. The prepared lesson begins by discussing the meaning of the word democracy. It then proceeds to examine the historical development of democratic ideas, and the various arguments presented over the years in opposition to this form of government. The lesson Understanding Democracy Teacher s Notes then turns to consider different ideas about how democracy should be put into practice, and contrasts models of direct and representative democracy. The lesson concludes by discussing the role of voting in contemporary democratic regimes, and specifically, arguments regarding who should have the right to vote. Several activities are suggested as part of the lesson and in order to further develop the key themes. How would direct democracy work in practice? Imagine if there was a widespread desire to make changes to the traffic system in your local town. Under a directly democratic regime, the nature of these changes would be discussed in an open meeting of all the town s inhabitants, rather than by a group of elected councillors. Furthermore, the people would decide together what changes should be introduced. One of the most famous exponents of this form of democracy was the French thinker Jean Jaques Rousseau ( ). Rousseau believed that only by participating directly and continuously in the process of organising the life of society could an individual enjoy true freedom, that is, when they contribute to the process of developing the laws with which they are expected to comply (Goodwin, 2007). He was deeply sceptical of elections, as is clear from the following quotation that discusses the practice of holding elections in England: The people of England regards itself as free; but it is grossly mistaken. It is free only during the election of members of parliament. As soon as they are elected, slavery overtakes it, and it is nothing. Note: Activity 1: Direct democracy could be incorporated here. 6. Representative democracy This is a more limited and more indirect form of democracy (Heywood, 2004). It is more limited because public participation is more sporadic. Instead of taking part in day to day discussions, popular involvement in the political process is confined to voting in an election every now and again. Learning objectives Define the term democracy ; Introduce different arguments about the way democracy should be implemented; Discuss the role of voting in contemporary democratic regimes and consider who should have the right to vote. Contents Lesson (50 minutes): Understanding Democracy - Teacher s notes - PowerPoint slides Activities Additional Resources Glossary It is more indirect, because the public does not contribute directly to the decision-making process. Instead, they elect representatives; these people are responsible for discussing and making decisions on the people s behalf. Key Skills 1. Communication All the suggested activities promote this skill in different ways: small group discussions; class discussions; preparing presentations. 2. Information technology For some activities students will need to make use of different technological resources as they research a specific subject. There are opportunities for students to use programmes such as PowerPoint to present their work. 3. Problem solving Many of the activities require students to evaluate different ideas, and consider their value and practicality. 4. Working with others Many of the activities can be undertaken either individually or in groups. 5. Improving own learning Students are encouraged to develop their own opinions about democracy. and performance Some of the activities require students to develop a strategy to gather, organise and evaluate information independently. Despite these differences, it is argued that representative democracy should continue to be regarded as a valid form of democracy. Why? Understanding Democracy Whilst the public s involvement with the democratic PowerPoint Slides process is more limited and less direct, the act of voting nevertheless still ensures that it is the people who ultimately hold political power. Those who are elected are expected to justify their actions and their decisions to the public. Also, the public have the opportunity, from Understanding Democracy Additional Resources Books All the sources below offer a clear and concise introduction to the different ideas about democracy that are discussed during the lesson. They are a useful starting point for any teachers wishing to familiarise themselves further with the topic before giving the lesson. Goodwin, B. (2006) Political Philosophy: A Beginners Guide for Students and Politicians (Cambridge: Polity Press), pp Websites The websites below contain useful information including: details about Members of Parliament and Assembly Members; the nature of the electoral system for elections to the National Assembly for Wales, the House of Commons and the European Parliament; campaigns for lowering the voting age; and ways of promoting political awareness and participation. These sites are a good place to start for students undertaking the web-based activities suggested on the Activities sheet. The Electoral Reform Society - The Electoral Commission (UK) - The Electoral Commission (Wales) - Votes at The Do Politics Centre - The Welsh Assembly - The House of Commons and the House of Lords - Other resources Another useful resource is the Democracy Cookbook, published by the Electoral Commission. It contains ideas for a variety of activities that promote understanding of the nature of the political system in Wales and other parts of the United Kingdom. Parts of the Democracy Cookbook are aimed at a younger age group than those studying for the Welsh Baccalaureate. Nevertheless, it is a resource worth consulting as the suggestions can be easily adapted or developed. Bilingual copies can be ordered free of charge from the offices of the Electoral Commission: Slide 1 time to time, to get rid of their representatives and elect new ones. This means that elected representatives are accountable to the people who elect them. This accountability guarantees democracy. So, as Andrew Heywood (2004: 225) notes: Although representative democracy may not fully realize the classical government by the people, it may nevertheless make possible a form of government for the people. The representative form of democracy, therefore, can Slide 2 also be interpreted as a valid form of democracy.
