9 Jeff Davey, a former CEO of one of Victoria s largest aged care not-for-profit-organisations, was often frustrated by the lack of evidence supporting policy decisions. To position his organisation and enhance service quality, he realised it was vital to conduct epidemiology research. Jeff studied the Master of Public Health (MPH) at the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine because of its reputation as a top tier course that teaches evidence based quantitative skills required to evaluate public health delivery outcomes. The Monash MPH offered me the convenience of online delivery, excellent content and the academic rigour that I require to develop my skills in epidemiological research, Jeff said. Drawing on his 20 years experience within the aged care sector, Jeff acknowledges that the Monash MPH has changed the way he thinks about health service delivery. He now feels better able to engage with practitioners on both a strategic and operational level as well as contribute to policy development, work with government and use evidence to evaluate service delivery efficiencies. I just wish I had these skills years ago. The evidence based and epidemiological based approach I have gained from the MPH will really help me and the industry. Today the horticulture graduate is back at university studying for a new career in nursing. Despite an early interest in anatomy and the functions of the human body, Lee thought nursing was not macho enough and instead pursued potential career paths in the army, architectural drafting and horticulture. Having enrolled in Monash University s new Master of Nursing Practice an accelerated program for graduates with non-nursing bachelor s degrees Lee says for the first time I feel I am doing what I should be doing. On his first day at Monash, Lee was surprised to discover that half of his fellow students were male and came from a wide range of backgrounds. The program s first cohort of students, due to graduate early next year, include an engineer, lawyer, teacher and an IT specialist. While only about 10 per cent of Australia s nursing workforce is currently male, the number of men entering the profession is steadily growing. Lee believes nursing absolutely benefits from a better gender balance. Students in the Master of Nursing Practice spend half the week in class and the other half in clinical practice. Lee said the curriculum was well matched to the clinical experience, giving students an opportunity to immediately apply academic knowledge. He said the highlights of his nursing experience so far included the satisfaction of providing care to a patient struggling to care for themselves, and comfort to a patient in the last days of their life. The relief that you see in a patient s eyes when they realise you are not going to compromise their dignity, or the gratitude from a family when you help make a dying patient more comfortable, is really rewarding. When he has completed the program, Lee hopes to spend some time working on hospital wards consolidating his nursing skills before specialising in coronary care. 17 With a dream of becoming a medical doctor, Michael Petrinchuk studied neuroscience in Canada before enrolling in the Graduate MBBS program at Monash University. Having been accepted into several medical schools in Australia, Michael decided on Monash because of its international reputation. Based in Churchill, the Graduate MBBS program greatly appealed to Michael due to its rural location with a close proximity to Melbourne. Adjusting to the study environment at Monash was straightforward for Michael. The support services at Churchill are excellent and I ve never met such helpful people, added Michael. Everything from organising classes, finding accommodation and accessing healthcare there was always help available, especially for international students. Built on problem based learning, the Graduate MBBS program at Monash is a very hands-on experience according to Michael. In our first year we were already seeing patients, and by second year we were exclusively seeing patients, supported by lectures and other focus groups, said Michael. The support I ve received from consultants and doctors here is simply amazing, and I believe more than I would receive in a Canadian institution. Michael highly recommends the Monash Graduate MBBS to any student considering a career in medicine. Monash trains you so well in all the basic fields of medicine and the degree really prepares you for medical specialisation in the future. 43 Dhaniel Baraldi PhD in cardiovascular pharmacology Bita Vaseghi PhD in pain treatment A keen interest in cardiovascular disease has brought Dhaniel Baraldi from Brazil to Monash University s Department of Pharmacology. Dhaniel is a Science without Borders program recipient. This Brazilian government scholarship initiative is expanding science, technology and innovation in Brazil through international student exchange and mobility. Having completed his Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences at Universidade FEEVALE and a Masters degree in Human Physiology at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Dhaniel is now studying his PhD in cardiovascular pharmacology at Monash. Dhaniel hopes his research will lead to the development of new drugs to treat hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. A physiotherapist from Iran, Bita Vaseghi had always been interested in innovative treatments for pain. When she discovered that Monash was one of the few institutions in the world researching the potential of transcranial direct current stimulation (tdcs) to provide a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for chronic pain, she applied to undertake her PhD at the University. tdcs sends weak electrical currents to various parts of the brain through electrodes. Bita is researching the most effective parts of the brain to attach the electrodes to achieve maximum pain reduction. She hopes her findings will lead to improved pain management for patients suffering from conditions such as multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, lower back pain, spinal cord injury and migraine. Her supervisor Dr Shapour Jaberzadeh is also from Iran and has helped her to settle into Melbourne life and connect with the local Iranian community. Bita has been awarded two scholarships: the Monash International Graduate Scholarship, which covers her tuition and the Monash Graduate Scholarship, which contributes to her living expenses. Ben Buchanan Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Neuropsycholoygy) Rodney Anderson PhD in depression treatment While Ben Buchanan thoroughly enjoyed his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy, he realised it didn t have the real world impact he was looking for. His fascination with people and why we react so differently to the same situations led Ben to study a Graduate Diploma and then Honours in Psychology followed by a Doctorate in Psychology. It s taken me 10 years of study to become a psychologist, says Ben. I particularly like the field because of the emphasis on scientific methodology and the sophisticated research techniques to enhance our understanding of human behaviour. Ben finds the most rewarding aspect of being a clinical psychologist is when a patient has an aha moment. It doesn t happen every day, but it s great when I can help a patient gain insight and see themselves and the world in a completely different way. Alongside practising as a clinical psychologist, Ben plans to continue developing his research career. In the world s largest neuroimaging research of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), Ben s findings have recently been published in the prestigious journal Psychological Medicine. Psychologists are clinicians as well as scientists, and it s really rewarding to create new knowledge by contributing to the science of psychology. Studying transcranial magnetic stimulation, an emerging treatment for depression. Many people suffering from depression fail to respond adequately to currently available treatments, including medications and psychotherapy. Rodney s research examines the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a noninvasive technique that uses electromagnetism to stimulate the brain via a coil placed on the scalp. He is working with the Monash Alfred Psychiatry research centre (MAPrc) to investigate various aspects of brain functioning and structure to identify why some people respond to TMS treatment while others do not. This should improve treatment for individuals and understanding of the neurobiology of depression. Rodney is particularly interested in clinical neuroscience as it combines the study of clinical aspects of human behaviour and the potential to help individuals suffering from serious mental illness, in combination with scientific research into the mechanisms behind mental illness and approaches to treatment. I have been very lucky to have been offered a project that is actively involved in the translation of scientific findings into the treatment of people suffering serious mental illness, he says. 41
