2 Academic Initiatives Three academic initiatives undertaken so far by the Department of Economics at Bloomsburg University and the Finance University have been recognized as successful. These Initiatives are: Double-Degree in Economics Student Exchange Program Summer School in Moscow
3 Two additional initiatives are in the planning stages Faculty Exchange International Internship in Moscow
4 Double-degree Program Star Program The Double-degree program has been held regularly every year since It is now a successful initiative that has been discussed among the university community to be ameliorated for other disciplines at Bloomsburg University. There have been over 160 students from the Finance University that have graduated from Bloomsburg University through this program. The curriculum is periodically reviewed in consultation with the Finance University s Program Director and staff. The logistics and other minor issues are responded to immediately as they emerge.
5 Coursework Requirements Criteria Coursework completed at the Finance University (90 credits) Bloomsburg University course requirements for General education and the Economics Major (30 Credits) Course contents to match the international standards Training and skills needed for career development
6 First Semester Intermediate Microeconomics Intermediate Macroeconomics Financial Accounting English Composition I Values & Ethics course (Cultural Anthropology recommended) Sixth course (optional)
7 Second Semester Advanced Political Economics Comparative System Money and Banking English History of Economic Thought English Composition II General Education course
8 Credit Hours Requirement *120 credit hours of which a minimum of 90 credits are transfer credits completed at The Finance University *Residency Requirement (Minimum of 30 credits taken at Bloomsburg University Campus). General Education (Part of Liberal Arts education) Particular attention is given to English Composition I and II. All students who graduate from a US university must have a good understanding of the English language and how it is used both orally and in writing. Business courses Integrating Financial Accounting into the economic curricula provides students with an understanding of the complexity of the US economy in particular and the western economies in general.
9 Credit Hours Requirement Cont. Economics Courses A degree in Economics must include coursework in Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics to ensure a good theoretical underpinning of the Economic Theory. In addition two to four more courses in economics are needed to obtain a broad understanding of the discipline. These courses include: Public Finance Labor Economics Environmental Economics Contrasting Economics Money and Banking History of Economic Thought Advanced Political Economics
10 Transfer Credit Evaluation Faculty Review and Evaluation The Faculty of the Department of Economics, Bloomsburg University continuously review and evaluate the economic curriculum at the Finance University and each student s transcript and make a determination of equivalent courses. This is done by obtaining the description of the courses taken at the Finance University, and finding the equivalent course at Bloomsburg University. In some cases this is difficult, but many courses do have equivalencies. Each student receives approximately 90 transfer credits.
11 Recommendations Stronger Background in English Composition and Accounting Arrive at Bloomsburg University two weeks prior to classes starting for tutorial in financial accounting and English composition. Attend special orientation for students before classes begin. Interact more with the University Student Community Arrange for suitable housing
