1 Programme Syllabus Sida 1 av 6 Dnr: MDH /10 Programme code: SEV25 International Business Management, 180 credits This is a translation of the original programme syllabus in Swedish, which was ratified by the Faculty Board of Humanities, Science and Caring Sciences on 18 November 2009 and is valid for programmes given after 1 July Objectives Upon completion of the programme the student is expected to be able to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding required to perform independent work in the business sector. The International business management aims at prepared students to meet the future labour market in both private and public sectors. Economists work in a range of areas and the programme aims, therefore, to provide the student with a solid basis in business management and related areas such as statistics, commercial law and economics. It also offers opportunities for specialization, primarily in business management. The courses within the programme aim, in addition, to prepare the student for third-cycle study. Knowledge and understanding After completing the programme, the student is expected to be able to: - demonstrate broad knowledge within the general area of economy and specialized knowledge in some of the following areas: marketing, economy monitoring, or management, - demonstrate knowledge in economic theory and scientific practice and understanding of current developments in research, - demonstrate knowledge in theory and method in marketing, economy monitoring, or management, - demonstrate knowledge in the structure of work life in the region and understanding of its future prospects, - demonstrate knowledge about the significance of information technology for the development of the private and public sectors, - demonstrate knowledge about the relationship between economy and social and ecological concerns from a sustainable point of view, - demonstrate knowledge in ethical and social aspects of economic theory. Skills and abilities After completing the programme, the student is expected to be able to: - demonstrate ability to collect and critically evaluate knowledge in various research topics and critically discuss economic phenomena, issues and situations, - demonstrate ability to identify and formulate economical issues independently, and perform qualified tasks within given time frames,
2 Sida 2 av 6 - demonstrate ability to present and discuss scientific conclusions, orally and in writing, in dialogue with various groups in order to contribute to national and international cooperation between academia and private and public sectors, - demonstrate ability to contribute to multidisciplinary cooperation between disciplines and areas of research, - demonstrate skills in team work and cooperation in various heterogeneous groups - demonstrate ability to use information technology to perform qualified tasks within given time frames, - demonstrate the ability required to perform independent work in the area of economy, - demonstrate understanding and ability to make scientific assessments from the point of view of sustainable development, - apply ethically and ecologically informed approaches in professional life. Critical judgement and approach After completing the programme, the student is expected to be able to: - demonstrate ability to make well-founded assessments in marketing, management, or economic management, with regard to scientific, social and ethical aspects, and demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development, - demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of economic theory, evaluate its social role, and reflect on responsible usage of research, - demonstrate knowledge and insight into different approaches, cultures and traditions, - demonstrate insight in the significance of leadership, - demonstrate awareness of his/her strengths and weaknesses and take responsibility for his/her learning development. Language of instruction English is the primary language of instruction. All assigned reading, lectures, workshops, and seminars are in English. Specific entry requirements Studies in mathematics of a minimum of three years from Upper Secondary School with a science profile and a TOEFL test result, minimum score 550 with a TWE score of at least 4 (PBT) or 79 with a TWE score of at least 17 (ibt) or an IELTS test result with an overall band score of minimum 6.0 and no band score below 5.0 or equivalent. Since the programme is given entirely in English, Mälardalen University will exempt from the requirements of Swedish language proficiency. Selection 5 seats (per campus and year) in the programme are reserved for students who have completed the Introduction year the previous semester. For the remaining seats students are eligible according to the following distribution: university credits 60%, test 40%.
3 Sida 3 av 6 Course content International Business Management is a three-year social science programme within business administration. The education programme covers business administration (90 credits), economics (30 credits), commercial law (15 credits) and statistics (15 credits). The programme begins with a basic course package of two years which aims at grounding the student in general economic theory. The first year contains courses in business administration and economics. The courses should enable the student to theorize economy as well as adopt different economic approaches. The second year offers progression courses in business administration aimed at giving the student the chance both to broaden and to apply his/her knowledge. In addition, students are trained in statistics and commercial law. One objective of the course is to offer students the possibility to apply knowledge and skills during the programme. The third year entails specialization in business administration and/or economics and students create their own profile through the courses they attend. There are, for examples, specialization courses in business administration (marketing and financial control), but students are allowed to choose from all English courses on offer at Mälardalen University. The programme ends with the student completing a degree project. The specialization courses are intended to train students ability to understand and analyze situations arising in business. The programme is designed to let students apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations. To this end the programme contains assignments carried out in collaboration with private enterprises and the public sector. The programme studies are individual but most courses contain groups work. Examination forms include written examinations and written and oral presentations. Options are offered primarily during the 3 rd semester. Options made within the programme may affect the student s chances of fulfilling the degree requirements. Courses may be cancelled due to lack of applicants and students are therefore recommended to apply to several courses. Host School The International Business Management programme is hosted by the School of Sustainable Development of Society and Technology. Degree The programme is designed to be included in the following degree: - Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics - Bachelor of Science in Business Administration - Bachelor of Science in Economics The student should be aware that choices made with regard to optional courses may affect the possibilities of fulfilling degree requirements. So may a decision not to complete courses. Information about degrees, degree requirements and the system of qualification can be found on the university web portal. Quality Assurance Students evaluate each course and receive feedback on their evaluations. The programme is evaluated once a year at a programme evaluation day, during which programme coordinators, working groups, and teams of instructors discuss course and programme
5 Sida 5 av 6 evaluations. Possible programme and course adjustments and changes are subsequently presented to the academy committee which has the authority to effectuate them. The academy committee also receives a summary of evaluations and key figures. Student Participation Students are represented in the academy board and the academy committee through the student union. The board and the committee are engaged both in programme-specific issues and general concerns for the academy. There is a coordinator for each programme that manages contacts with individual students as well as the student association. Programme students are invited to participate in working groups for programme development. Research Basis Research at Mälardalen University is carried out mainly within six prioritized areas: Didactics and intercultural communication, Embedded systems, Innovation and product development, Environment, Energy and resource optimization, Sustainable development, working life and management, and Health and welfare. The International Business Management programme falls within the research area Sustainable development, working life and management. Several of the programme courses are directly aimed at preparing the student for third-cycle studies. Third Stream Mission Mälardalen University works actively to offer education leading to employment, among other things by developing courses in interaction with the wider community. The programme contains a number of items that are directly related to working life in order to prepare students for future career opportunities or help the working student develop his/her professional role. While the design of the items varies according to course and subject, they have in common an explicit focus on knowledge useful and applicable outside the university. Internationalization Mälardalen University regards internationalization one of the key factors to qualitative education and research. Mälardalen collaborates with a number of universities which are open to students in the International Business Administration programme. Students are encouraged to contact the internationalization coordinator and to read relevant sections on the university web portal for further information about this option. Students that are exposed to international environments and issues increase their knowledge and understanding of other cultures and traditions, both of which are in high demand on the labour market. Students may also gain intercultural knowledge and understanding, however,
6 Sida 6 av 6 through their choice of assignment or through participation in sponsor activities hosted by the student council.
