3 POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN SPORT PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND ROUTES Module information can be found on the enclosed pathway map. It is the aim of the Cardiff School of Sport that postgraduate learning should be a student-centred activity, where students are responsible for managing their own learning. In addition, the general aims of the postgraduate programmes are: to provide a flexible postgraduate programme of study that meets the needs of its student clientele; to produce analytical and reflective scholars who are critically aware of contemporary issues related to theory and practice in their respective professional and academic fields; to provide a platform for intellectual and vocational development in Sports Studies; to produce postgraduates that are able to play a prominent and constructive role in the delivery and development of sports services and strategies; to develop a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective of Sports Studies; to facilitate the development of the student s curriculum experience to one that involves the student in independent learning and research skills. The aims of the postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma are identical. The two awards are differentiated not by the nature or the depth of study but by the duration of the student s candidature and therefore the breadth of study. In addition, the general aims of the postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma are: to enable students to utilise and value their existing knowledge and skills; to enable the student to improve upon and extend their existing communication, analytical, conceptual and research skills and abilities; to enhance the student s personal, present and future professional understanding of Sports Studies; to allow students to engage with relevant contemporary issues through the application of theoretical analysis and research at postgraduate level; to enhance the student s own personal and present and future professional and academic development. 3
4 In addition to those already identified, the aims of the Masters degree are highlighted as follows: to build upon previous research experience; to undertake a piece of discipline-related research activity exemplified in the submission of a dissertation project (SSP7040). Learning Outcomes Outcomes of the postgraduate certificate include the student s ability to: demonstrate an informed and creative approach to learning and present and future professional development at both a personal level and as a member of a group; understand and draw upon the disciplines and concepts that inform practice and critically apply them in the analysis of contemporary professional and/or academic issues; develop, evaluate and apply specialist knowledge in their own professional and/or academic situations; communicate more effectively their knowledge of the concepts concerned with professional practice and academic scholarship both within their own profession and/or discipline and between professions and disciplines. In addition to those outcomes identified above, postgraduate diploma students should be able to undertake further critical analysis and evaluation, and to utilise research findings to enhance their own professional and/or academic practice. In addition to those outcomes identified above, Masters degree students should, by means of the dissertation project, demonstrate the ability to design, plan, undertake and present research findings that are relevant to study and academic discourse in their chosen area of interest. TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT Teaching and learning methods include: lead lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, self-directed learning by study packs and by the use of research-based teaching materials and methods, student presentations, guest speakers. Assessment methods include: coursework essays, presentations, research reports, tutorials, and a dissertation project. The Awards Structure For the Master of Science (MSc) degree the student has to complete nine modules (six taught and three dissertation) = 180 total credits. For the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) the student has to complete six taught modules = 120 total credits. For the Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) the student has to complete any three modules (these will normally be option modules) = 60 total credits. Modes of Attendance Each module is taught over a duration of 10 weeks; the academic year is split into three, 10-week lecture blocks. 4
5 Full-time candidature normally requires students to successfully complete both all taught elements and the dissertation of their degree within a period of not less than 12 months and not more than 24 months. Part-time students can attend lectures that are available on the timetable during each academic session (day and twilight) such that they successfully complete both all taught elements and the dissertation of their degree within a period of not less than 24 months and not more than 60 months. Programme Study Time A student's time on the programme is broken into three elements - class contact time, directed study time and independent study time. The only exception to this pattern is with respect to SSP7016, the Independent Study module. Class contact time is normally made up of lectures, seminars, and individual and group tutorials. Each module is delivered as a coherent 10-week block of 10 three hour sessions. This constitutes the students class contact time (i.e. 30 hours). Directed study time is defined as time where students prepare for forthcoming lectures, plan seminar deliveries and read relevant research literature that is directed by the module tutor(s). This is expected to be a maximum of 60 hours of student effort per module. When appropriate, independent study time includes time when the student conducts their own research methodologies and engages in additional problem-solving or research-based activities that are related to a given module but where the activities are not directed by the module tutor(s). This is expected to be a maximum of 30 hours of student effort per module. 5
