Students who successfully complete modules Clinical Reasoning and medical decision making and Developing and Delivering Primary Care and a dissertation orientated to primary care will be awarded the MPH (Primary Care). For the award of MPH (Health Protection) students must include passes in those modules so prescribed by the Division and the Health Protection Agency. Date of production of specification ; revised 2010/ Date of programme review 2013/ Educational aims of the programme To give individuals the academic foundation for leadership roles and research in public health or primary care. The programme is deliberately aimed at both medical and non-medical health practitioners, and is intended to be inclusive and integrative, responding to NHS documents and identified national skill shortages. It will recognise and build upon the wide range of professions and skills that contribute to public health.

Educational objectives of the programme/programme outcomes The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding and skills in the following areas: Knowledge and understanding The programme provides a knowledge and understanding of the following: The social, economic, environmental and genetic influences on health; The sources of information relating to population and health and how data is collected analysed and published; The principles of disease prevention and health promotion; Risk assessment, risk perception, risk management and risk communication; Theories of organisational behaviour and management and their application to the improvement of public health services The development and implementation of health policy in public health/primary care The professional, ethical and legal responsibilities of a leader in public health/primary care. These are achieved through the following teaching/learning methods and strategies: Lectures Seminars/tutorials Directed reading Self-directed learning Assessment: Written examinations Assignments Oral presentation Skills and other attributes Intellectual skills: Identify areas within public health or primary care that would benefit from further research. Draw on appropriate social and methodological theory to formulate a research question. Design a research project using an appropriate methodology. Critical appraisal of existing research and official reports and other publications. 5 the programme with related credit values MPH & MSc: 2 core taught modules worth 15 credits each, the core research project module worth 60 credits, plus optional modules worth a total of 90 credits. Full-time students take all the modules over one year, whilst part-time students will take the 2 core taught modules in the first year, the core research project module in the second year, with the timing of the remaining optional modules in either first or second year. Students who successfully complete modules Clinical Reasoning and medical decision making and Developing and Delivering Primary Care and a dissertation orientated to primary care will be awarded the MPH (Primary Care). For the award of MPH (Health Protection) students must include passes in those modules so prescribed by the Division and the Health Protection Agency. (b) range of credit levels permitted within the programme Level 7 only (c) maximum number of credits permitted at the lowest level 180 (d) minimum number of credits required at the highest level 180 (e) progression and award requirements (if different from the standard) Students must pass all modules with an overall mark of 50% in each in order to be awarded the MPH or the MSc. Compensation will be permitted within the taught modules, but not between modules, provided that the mark of an individual element of assessment does not fall below 40%. The percentage weighting for the calculation of merit and distinction will directly reflect the proportion of credits allocated to each module in relation to the overall credit taken within each programme/award, with classification thresholds set according to the core scheme as set out in the Credit Framework Regulations of King s College London. Part-time students must normally satisfy the examiners in all first year modules before they may be permitted to proceed to the second year of the programme. To obtain the exit award of Postgraduate Diploma, students must pass modules totalling 120 credits. To obtain the award of Postgraduate Certificate, students must pass modules totalling 60 credits.
