connecting europe and emerging economies through sustainable business development Maastricht-EU Institute for the study of Emerging Economies
Located in the 2,000 year old historic city of Maastricht, on the banks of the Meuse (Maas) river, and in the heart of the Euregion Meuse-Rhine in close proximity to Brussels, Frankfurt, London and Paris, the MEUSE-Institute enriches the business, management and entrepreneurship programs of Maastricht School of Management (MSM) and its partner institutions. The MEUSE-Institute was established in early 2014 by the Maastricht School of Management, one of the oldest and most international business schools in the Netherlands.
introduction The Maastricht-EU Institute for the Study of Emerging Economies (MEUSE-Institute) is an institute of Maastricht School of Management (MSM). The institute s mission is to promote sustainable and ethical business, business education and innovation in emerging and developing economies in a manner that will promote inclusive global development, both in the European Union (EU) and emerging and developing countries. Through this mission the MEUSE-Institute addresses the need for a better understanding and support of the evolving nature of business, management and entrepreneurship in emerging economies and its impact on the EU. Mutual learning between the EU and emerging economies is central for continued global growth and prosperity. Both emerging economies and the EU stand to gain much from sharing new ideas, knowledge and information in business, management and entrepreneurship. about the meuse-institute the MEUSE-Institute s portfolio consists of: Collaborative Global Education Programs Applied Research and Policy Advocacy Capacity Development and Consulting Services The MSM Management Lab and Mentorship Program The acronym MEUSE appropriately refers to the river Meuse (Maas), an almost 1,000 km major European river flowing through Maastricht that has connected various countries throughout Europe with the rest of the world over many centuries - through water-borne trade and business. The logo of the MEUSE-Institute acknowledges the Mosasaurus, who flourished more than 70 million years ago in the area of Maastricht, where the first specimen was discovered. Prof. Dr. Wim Naudé, Executive Director MEUSE-Institute and Dean, MSM

collaborative global education programs The MEUSE-Institute promotes the development of business schools and management education across and for emerging economies, linking European opportunities and approaches to emerging market entrepreneurial flair. Our Global Education Programs are offered in partnership with more than a dozen institutions in Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle-East, and South America, and is accredited by AMBA, ACBSP and IACBE. In particular we promote the Maastricht School of Management s education programs where it can contribute to business and management development in emerging economies. These include An internationally accredited Collaborative Global MBA degree. This offered in emerging market locations in partnership with selected educational organizations only. The Collaborative Global MBA program is offered both as full-time and part-time programs. The (70 ECTS) curriculum for the MBA program is similar to the curriculum offered by MSM in its MaastrichtMBA in The Netherlands. Various accredited Master of Management degrees with opportunities for specialization in cutting edge and in-demand global management and business topics. The MEUSE-Institute is an incubator for business school and management development. It assist young and aspiring institutions that provide business education to develop their capacity, systems and processes to offer a sound business education platform that is indigenous and adapted to local circumstances. In recognition for this role, MSM was a finalist for the Association of MBA (AMBA) Innovation Award Further information For further information contact Ms. Katalin Kovacs, Associate Dean of Quality Assurance and Services at MSM, and Director Collaborative Global Education at the MEUSE-Institute, at kovacs@msm.nl or see MSM and its MEUSE-Institute is a signatory to the Principles for Responsible Management Education, and is a member of the Global Business School Network (GBSN).
applied research and policy advocacy The MEUSE-Institute is the vehicle through which MSM conducts applied research and policy advocacy. Faculty of Maastricht School of Management is working as Residential Fellows of the MEUSE-Institute. They are complemented by a number of researchers from partner and other institutions who are affiliated to the MEUSE- Institute as Non-Residential Fellows. Research focuses on the following three areas: The Innovating Organization This focus area is concerned with entrepreneurship, in particular entrepreneurial innovation in emerging, developing and fragile economies and how this affects development, social inclusiveness and structural change, including their relationship to the European Union. It is particularly concerned with the study of the relationship between entrepreneurship and economic development and how public policy, including social security, social entrepreneurship and regulatory capacity can improve the environment for innovative and productive entrepreneurship to flourish. Co-ordinator: Prof. Dr. Wim Naudé at naude@msm.nl The Trading Organization This focus area is concerned with trade and investment and the businesses - most often small and medium enterprises in developing countries, that are involved in global value chains. Its particular interest lies in how participation in international trade by businesses and entrepreneurs in developing and emerging markets can be increased, what the contribution of management knowledge of international business and exports to international success is, and how the business relationship between Europe and emerging and developing countries is evolving. Co-ordinator: Prof. Dr. Jeroen van Wijk at jcac.wijk@msm.nl The Performing Organization This focus area is concerned with High Performance Organizations (HPOs). These are organizations that achieve financial and non-financial results that are exceedingly better than those of their peer group over a period of time of five years or more, by focusing in a disciplined way on that what really matters to the organization. A unique focus is on comparative research focusing on both EU-based companies and companies in emerging and developing countries. Co-ordinator: Prof. Dr. André de Waal at waal@msm.nl Research Methods and Skills The MEUSE-Institute offers an intensive 12-week course (also available online) on Research Methods and Skills, to prepare graduate students for success in their research, whether in academia or outside. The Research Methods and Skills program is an integral part of the highly ranked MSM Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program. More information, Dr. Jakomijn van Wijk at wijk@msm.nl
publications To increase the uptake of the MEUSE-Institute s applied research by decision-makers, various dissemination and policy advocacy initiatives are undertaken, including annual conferences and workshop events, and publication of journal articles, books, working papers, occasional papers, and business briefs. Various research fellows write their own blogs. Selected recent books by fellows of the MEUSE-Institute include: For more publications please visit our website. Further information For more information on the various research programs contact Dr. Jeroen van Wijk, Chairman MSM Research Board at jcac.wijk@msm.nl Jean Monnet Chair for MSM Professor Harald Sander Professor Harald Sander, Professor of Economics at MSM, has been awarded a 3-year Jean Monnet Chair on Europe in the Global Economy. The Chair will focus education and research on Europe s economy and will actively seek to establish sustainable research networks both within Europe and between Europe and other continents. The aim is to promote and disseminating in-depth knowledge on European economic affairs.
capacity development and consulting services The MEUSE-Institute promotes the development of local capacity in management and development of organizations, in particularly education institutions, government ministries responsible for education, and private companies and public utilities in key sectors, particularly in water management, agricultural value chains, education and energy management. Our expertise in capacity development for the educational sector, the private sector and the public sector in general, is summarized below. Our services in the areas outlined are provided through: technical cooperation; institutional twinning and partnering; tailor-made training; advisory services; and applied research and policy analysis (see in this respect also the research focus areas of the MEUSE-Institute earlier in this brochure). Further information Mr. Meinhard Gans, Director of Capacity Development and Consultancy Services and Managing Director MEUSE-Institute at or see Capacity development for the higher and vocational education sector Institutional strategy development Strategic leadership development Educational innovation (Female) Entrepreneurship University - industry linkages Quality management & accreditation Research capacity development for the private sector Sustainable business development Leadership development Change management Strategy development Performance management Human resources development (Female) Entrepreneurship Multi-stakeholder partnerships for the public sector Policy- and strategy development Strategic leadership development Change management Performance management E-governance Multi-stakeholder partnerships
Examples of some current projects are: University Leadership and Management Capacity Development, Ethiopia We support the public universities across Ethiopia in building leadership and management capacities under the stewardship of the national Education Strategy Centre (ESC). The fact that this project involves so many institutes provides great opportunities for mutual learning, sharing of best practices and piloting of alternative institutional development approaches. Besides training and coaching to the individual universities, a national capacity building unit for higher education is set-up. Centre of Sustainable Business Competitiveness, Indonesia In Indonesia, the MEUSE-Institute has set-up the Centre of Sustainable Business Competitiveness (CSBC), hosted at the Business School of the Agricultural University Bogor (IPB). As a joint MEUSE-IPB expert centre, CSBC is focusing on the relation between business, public sector, and academia with the mission to enhance the ability of the private and public sector in Indonesia to respond proactively, innovatively and exceptionally to global market challenges. Capacity Development for Water Resources and Irrigation, Egypt We support the Egyptian Government in the area of institutional development and strengthening of support structure, and curriculum renewal and the introduction of modern learning techniques for water resource management. This multi-year partnership entails a variety of training workshops, curriculum design and revision, development of gender strategy, and exposure visits. Business development for agricultural value chains in Tanzania On request of the Netherlands Embassy, MEUSE-Institute experts helped identifying, developing and supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Tanzanian agricultural value chains so that they become eligible for financial support and benefit from the SME Agricultural Impact Fund. The applied research was composed out of 18 agricultural value chain analyses for Tea, Sugar, Coffee, Raw Meat, Agri-tourism, Sunflower, Grain, High End Vegetables, Avocados, Dairy, Poultry and Nuts.
management lab and mentoring program The MEUSE-Institute works with MSM s highly ranked Doctoral Program (DBA) and award-nominated international business mentorship program to link its body of international management students with local businesses and organizations in the Euregion and build bridges between EUregion businesses and emerging economy businesses. The Institute also acts as the focal point of MSM s social entrepreneurship programs, and programs promoting women entrepreneurship. These initiatives are organized under the brand of the MSM Management Lab, an innovative and flexible business hub that also co-operates among others with the Maastricht Centre for Entrepreneurship (MC4E), the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus and various other dynamic EURegion businesses. MEUSE research fellows working in our three focus areas provide critical inputs in this regard. Various companies and organizations are participating in the Management Lab through our DBA program as well as award-nominated mentorship program for Maastricht MBA students. The DBA program has been ranked #2 in the world in In 2014 the program, in collaboration with a number of key European Universities, was awarded an Erasmus+ grants from the European Commission to develop over the next three years European professional doctorate degrees. The Mentoring Program was nominated for a Nuffic Orange Carpet Award in In recent times senior managers from prominent organizations acted as mentors to MSM MBA students, including from organizations such as Philips Lighting, Rotary Maastricht East, 6P consultancy, City of Maastricht, TNT, Chamber of Commerce, Statistics Netherlands, Parkstad Region, RSM Wehrens Mennen de Vries, Maastricht University, DSM Innovation Center, Laura Metal Holding, ING Netherlands, Rabobank, Obvion, and Sopheon. Our Management Lab also supports and develops tailor-made training for companies and governments, and facilitates business networking between European businesses and those in emerging economies. As such it organizes business-to-business missions from the Netherlands. For instance the Management Lab organized a high-level business mission to Azerbaijan in April 2014 consisting of 14 business leaders, four government leaders and three higher education representatives, who met with five ministers and over 140 Azerbaijani businesses. It has also, for more than 12 years, been in partnership with the Chinese-based Baosteel Group, one a Fortune 500 company and one of the largest steel producers in the world, to design and develop tailor-made management education programmes for its key executives. ERASMUS+
LaunchBase LaunchBase is the incubation platform of the Maastricht Centre for Entrepreneurship. It provides students, young alumni and other talented young professionals that seek to launch a venture with international appeal an inspiring yet demanding environment to develop into a successful entrepreneur. Our incubation platform provides a comprehensive approach to business incubation. The initial stage is Base, a pre-incubation program intended for talented students (and alumni) to make the first steps towards becoming an entrepreneur. The second stage is Launch, an incubation program that guides entrepreneurial teams from starting-up through the initial stages of business growth. Separating incubation into these two stages allows us to provide easily accessible pre-incubation support to many, and highly selective incubation support to relatively few ventures that promise to develop into substantial businesses.
