Completing College: What it Takes, What s at Stake? Oakland University March 2013 Brigit Dyer and Joshua Trader
Importance of Degree completion For students: Students with an associates degree or certificate will earn as much as $8,000 more per year and about $400,000 more in a lifetime than a high school graduate (Census Bureau, 2005) Unemployment for community college graduates is typically 30 percent lower than for high school grads (Education at a Glance 2010: OECD indicators, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2010)
Importance of Degree Completion Community college mission: Access + Success For colleges: Movement toward linking financial aid with graduation outcomes (The American Dream, HCM Strategists, 2012). Community College graduates likely to go on to earn additional degrees: 50% of the individuals who earned bachelor s degrees in science, engineering or health fields, and 41% of those who earned a masters degree in these fields attended a community college at some point (National Science Foundation, 2010).
Importance of Degree completion For the economy: Job growth increasing for those with associate s degrees based on a high demand for people with middle-skills such as lab technicians, teachers in early childhood programs, computer engineers, radiation therapists, paralegals and machinists. 29 million jobs paying middle class wages today require only an associates degree (Georgetown University s Center on Education and the Workforce, November 2012)
About Delta Great Lakes Bay Region(200,000+): Saginaw, Bay and Midland counties Saginaw 42.69%, Bay 27.34%, Midland 14.94% 10,720 students enroll in Fall and Winter semesters 64.69% part-time, 35.31% full-time 78.82% White, 9.99% Black, 6.04% Hispanic Age %, %, 25-29% 13.65%, %, 45 and older 5.78% Transfer rate higher than average, Graduation rates lower
What is C4? The Community College Completion Corp (C4) is a national movement designed to encourage students to complete their educational goals at the community college level. This movement is a partnership between the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Center for Community College Student Engagement, American Association of Community Colleges, the League for Innovation,The Association of Community College Trustees, and the National Institute of Staff Organizational Development.
Why C4 at Delta? President Obama s charge to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. Project of Phi Theta Kappa; inspired by national and state movements/projects To motivate and inspire the stakeholders at every level by promoting student engagement and success through shared experiences. To create an institutional culture focused on college completion. To publicize the importance of college completion at the local, state and national level.
Week in review Over 1,200 students, faculty and staff on main campus as well as the centers signed pledges to complete. Guest speaker Isa Adney Monday November 26 th. Current and former student panel on importance of completion. Student Leadership Academy discussion on finding your passion. Final Remarks done by Diana Gutierrez.
How the C4 planning happened Josh came to Brigit with the idea, AtD members agreed, September 2012 Committee formed in September. Shared the importance of C4 with other student groups at each campus and invited them to be part of our efforts. Developed accountability structures and implemented a formal event plan. Program formation with dates.
Assigned tasks and received buy-in from staff members whose involvement was critical to success. Created a media and public information plan. Publicized the event on campus and through the college s media list. Held regular meetings throughout the planning process to keep on deadline and ensure the success of the event.
C4 Effect at Delta Culture Change A renewed energy around commitment to student success and completion. Broadened student engagement in efforts to support the success of their fellow students. Engagement in expanding the partnership and C4 movement to the rest of the state. Mindset Change Increased focus on importance of student success among faculty, staff, students and community. Connected drive for increased accountability and data-driven decision making with mission and real world outcomes.
Outputs, Outcomes and future plans Special Tribute from the state legislature Student Outreach campaign: Phone calls to those with 55 credits or more = 54% who signed the pledge applied for or received a certificate or degree at the end of Fall 2012 and s to other students to come in and see an advisor Presentations: Oakland U and PTK convention Fall 2013: 2 nd annual C4 Completion week at Delta
